My vet say I should spay at 5 months. Should I?

Hi there,

Biscuit just turned 5 months and the Vet suggested her to be spayed.

Any comments?

Thanks,

Many thoughts on what age to spay. We spayed our female at about 5 months. My vet - who is also a personal friend of 30 years - suggested this age and suggested its an easier surgery and quicker recovery. we had no problems.

Some however believe, early spay keeps the female from acquiring mature traits. And can cause incontinence. I might agree with the lack of maturity but no problmes with anything else. I would follow my Vet's opinion.
I've had them done earlier than this, but it is my belief if you can wait thru the first heat cycle, do so (and please don't let her breed!) I'd rather see a dog mature a bit longer with her normal hormone load intact. Maybe the huge increase in spay incontinenece, overly tall dogs, etc may be due to too early spay. Do not spay during a heat cycle as it is far more dangerous for the bitch and difficult for the vet.

MO was a pound pup so had to be spayed before I could bring her home. She was about 5 months and has had no problems, so I'm not saying don' spay now, just think about the alternative.
Later is better for more than one reason. It allows the female to get all her female characteristcs, physically & mentally. There are studies also that show spaying a bit later helps with the prevention of certain types of cancer later on in life. There is another thread here somewhere with all that good information in it. I will say I have seen dogs out of some of our litters that were spayed/neutered early & in each case, they ended up quite a bit taller (we call it rangier) & more narrow thru the chest than their littermates. My vet is a breeder vet (he has large dogs). He always recommends letting them go thru at leat 1 heat cycle & possibly 2 if possible before spaying.
Here is a link for you to read to make an informative choice as to when. Noting larger breeds better older then 5 months to spay.

Hard one and having a female go into heat is a big responsibility which lasts for 21 days. Most girls in the breed around 9 months is usually better if spaying and you dont want the ordeal of a bitch in heat.

Read the link, most vets push for early spaying as easier for them, might be allright for toy and small breeds as they can be fully mature by 8-12 months old but when you read on the larger breeds the benefits for them are better to do it later then under 6 months of age. Growth plates are more formed etc and the later you leave it the better for them in the longer term benefits, just load yourself with good info and make a decision from research data and not the vet as to when is suitable for you & having a larger breed to consider when is the right time. :D
HI Guys,

Thanks for all the information.. Will read through and chat with my Vet.
