Ear Infection for Nigel

Poor guy just went to the vet today and he has yeast and bacteria. He is 3 years old and this is his first one. I was taking him to a groomer but I am thinking I can do a better job myself. There was a huge amount of hair in his ear canals. My vet said he was concerned his body didn't seem to be fighting it off at all. It worries me too, but I am hoping it won't happen again. I am extremely diligent with Bella's health issues, now I will be getting a hemostadt and doing a twice weekly ear cleaning after he is healed up. I am a little upset at my groomer too. I have used them for many years.

:( poor nigel
Poor Nigel. :(
Was he acting sick or in pain? I hope he's responding to the ABX quickly.
Get well wishes for Nigel!
No, just grunting when scratching his ears and head shaking. He has yeast and bacteria but doesn't cry when I administer the meds.
Zorro came to us with this complaint and unfortunately it comes back regulary, I will forward you the name of the medizine we have for the young man. We apply once a day the first week, every second day the second week and every third day in the third week.

When they have a lot of hair in their ears and also with the ear canal being covered (floppy ears) no or very little air circulates in their, perfect for this illness. This is nothing to worry about although uncomfortable for Nigel his life is not in danger.

Tip put socks on his back feet and change them daily, firstly to stop him scratching and secondly it prevents him transfering the bacteria to other parts of his body.
He isn't scratching much, so that isn't a problem. I think it looked much worse on the slide that it feels at this point. I will make sure he gets all his meds. I just want him to feel perfect again. He is a whopping 78 lbs now. :D
Poor Nigel! This is the ONE health problem Oscar does not have, which always surprises my vets. :D Based upon all of his immune issues AND deafness, we thought his ears might be a weak spot, but no, it's everything else.

For both of our sheepies, I instructed the groomer not to do anything to their ears but bathe them, and I would handle the ear hair removal. Oscar severely dislikes anyone messing with his ears, and I didn't want that added to his anxiety level when he goes to the groomer. I'm the bad guy, and that's fine. Oscar is a very good boy when I do it, but he slinks into position when he sees the grooming powder, head down, moving oh-so-slowly...........

Poor Nigel    ~~~~

Sheepie kisses  and hugs :ghug: from Heart to her west coast friend!!!!
LMAO!!! Oscar!! Nigel does the slow head down creep if I have any grooming implement in my hand...or if he suspects he might be getting a pocket pack for cat poo eating.

I realized Nigel was at the groomers at the beginning of May, and there was way too much ear canal hair for that recent of a grooming trip. Wish me luck as I plan to do all my own grooming soon.
Brick gets these all the time.
He won't let me near his ears anymore. He hates the medications. I can't even get near him with the bottle. If I corner him & try to hold him down, he just about snaps at me.
I'm taking him to the vet so they can knock him out and clean his ears properly. While he's out, they can clean his teeth and cut & round his nails, as well.

It seems when his fur gets long and he gets wet is when the infections flare up.
Many groomers consider ear plucking a veterinary function so unless your groomer works for your vet, don't be too upset with them. It's kind of a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation as plucking can often trigger a nasty infection and groomers don't want to take the responsibility for that.

Whether you use a hemostat or not, it's a good idea to use ear powder. Nelson's ears are very deep so we pluck as much hair as possible just using fingers and powder and go for the deeper hairs (but not too deep!) with a hemostat.

If it's any consolation, OES are susceptible to infections. Around here we've always got a supply of Mometamax drops handy just in case. :-)
My first two OES boys had ear infections regularly. The one I lost before I got Nigel rarely if ever had one. Nigel is 3 and this is his first, and Bella has huge open ears and hasn't had one yet...she has enough other stuff to make up for that. I know it is a breed issue as I have had these dogs since 1976, but it does help to hear I am not alone.
It's Tipup the cat that gets them at our house. :(
I would much rather do ear drops on ANY dog than a cat with all it's claws, teeth and who is really PISSED! :cow:
Have you tried Zymox? My vet has me keep it on hand, just in case. The few times I've had to use it, it works really fast......like in about 4 days the problem was gone. I don't have ear problems as a general rule but sometimes in the summer they can show up. I like to nip them in the bud.
Tri-otic ointment on Epi-otic ear wash. It is his normal course of action. He is only shaking his head after applications. That is better than it was.
Awwwww poor Nigel! Its so funny I was at a seminar and while I have always plucked my guys ears he was dead against it. He said it can irritate the ear and cause more problems. Needless to say I still pluck and I have no problems with ear infections. And I also use the ear powder after cleaning and before plucking. Makes the job so much easier and it helps keep the ear dry. Another suggestion is to flip his ears open when you can (I do it when we're watching TV) so air can circulate.

I hope he feels better soon!
 Hah, Wendy!!! So you've seen the "slinky sheepdog" act too! Cracks me up.

Yes...he always acts like he did somthing wrong when he is trying to sneak away.
Went for the recheck today. Only two little yeast spots on the slide, so just a little flush every other day for 10 days. After that we will be back on a once a week flush. I am so relieved after all Bella has gone through. Nigel is doing great!
For the 1st year after I rescued Murphy, he would constantly have one ear infection after another and the stink.. OMG it was out of this world. Someone told me about this receipe and I made it and used it on him and he has NEVER had another ear infection again.

Here is the link to the article and receipe.

I have used this, and it is a good recipe. It is one of the gospel treatments for ears in the basset world!

I did have one friend who tried it and her dog ended up allergic to one of the ingredients....but Harold is the exception to most things...crazy dog
