Opinions please: best type of RV

We are tentatively shopping for a new RV to live in during our summer show season. We currently have a 22' 5th wheel that sadly let us down in many ways last year. The electrical didn't work, nor the heater, and the roof leaked. All this during a summer that featured 30 F temps at night , and LOTS of rain .

So...we either fix it, or sell it cheap and buy something else. Whatever we buy will have to be used and very reasonable. So, this is my question: what are the pros and cons, for a family of two adults and two sheepies, of a 5thwheel, a travel trailer, a truck camper, a class A moterhome, or a class C moterhome? We have a truck that can pull just about anything, but don't want to deal with maneuvering anything huge. My husband is a big guy, and wants to be able to stand up inside...this is pretty much his only request  .

Do you like the ability to park the RV and use the truck while the RV is parked? That would be a big factor.

I personally only had a popup that we pulled, then a smaller Class C. It was a trade-off. Liked the ability to park the camper and use the vehicle. But, it also was nice to have the fully useable RV while on the road....super handy - making supper while someone else drove, access to all your stuff while driving, etc.

My friend Donna has had both also - and I have gone to MANY dog shows w/ her, using both her RV's. She 1st had a super large 5th wheel. It had tall ceilings (a waste, we both are super short...lol), slides and it was a toy hauler, so it had the utility area with the hard floor, and the back with doors that dropped down into a ramp. Separate side door to the back as well. That was fab - she outfitted the back as the "dog room" and had all the crates stacked (she has toy breed dogs) and grooming setup, dog food and supplies. But her big diesel she hauled it with broke down (several times, was an agonizing death) too many times, so she traded the 5th wheel in.......

and got a really huge Class C. I swear it's the longest Class C they make!
It has slides, but overall is much smaller than the 5th wheel. Still very spacious. I have driven it, and it's not bad - big, but not horrid. Helps that the front end still looks like a van - maybe seems more manageable.
It is nice having the dogs right there too while driving - before we always worried that the air might go out (generator) while driving in the 5th wheel.

Another thought - My Eagle River and other AK relatives used to come back to MN and visit and buy an RV here. The cost difference was signifiacnt. For what the RV cost in AK, they could fly home (2 people) to MN, visit all the relatives, buy the same RV and drive it back to AK!! Pretty impressive!
Thanks Dawn!

The question of being able to unhitch and use the truck is a good one. If we went with a moterhome we would possibly have to tow a car behind. On the other hand, a moterhome could tow a smaller trailer for all the artwork and displays, which would be lovely. (oooo...imagining being able to pull in and camp without setting up and unloading first!)

Yeah...prices here are so high, that if we were shopping for new we would definitely go out-of-state, but really we are most likely looking for old and semi-funky   All I ask is a non-leaky roof and functioning electrical. Of course that is another worry with a moterhome, as opposed to a trailer: it must also be mechanically sound, and in our price range that's risky 8O !
Since you already have the truck, if you intend to keep it the 5ver is the way to go, IMHO.

We might be wanting to sell the truck too, if we could find a moterhome or a trailer light enough to be pulled with our small truck . The ideal eventual combo, in fact, would be finding a van and a trailer it could tow, since Id like to swap our truck for a van for winter shows anyway.

The 5th wheel is great for easy towing, but, since we have to pack so much (booth, displays, art) its been a pain to lose the whole back of the truck for packing, and we always wind up dangerously overloading the trailer (weight-wise). The other downside of an older 5thwheel is the bed being in a high, low ceilinged area. We've thought a lot about getting a truckbed camper, and that's one reason we've not. Poor Scott hates having to contort to climb in and out
So, a cargo van with a big engine & towing package and a medium sized bumper hitch RV would be the way to go! :D
Have you looked into any of the "fun mover" types? I think they make them in almost all classes now. Just might fit the bill.
Do you mean a "toy hauler" Ron? One of those RV w/garage type things?

Those look wonderful for our purposes, and in 5-10 years, when they are rundown and going cheap, I think they will probably be a great solution for us

I thought I had found the perfect thing on craig's list this morning...really neat old ('78) class C on a Chevy truck body. It was powerful enough to tow an additional trailer behind, nice and tall and roomy inside without being super long, everything (supposedly) functional, and only 3000.00! So I called the guy, and apparently he had already sold it...in the first 10 minutes it was up! 8O RVs are going quick here at this time of year apparently! I'm now worried we have waited too long to start looking :(
might be too small but ive always thought they were neat - good for the travelling artist (I am one myself too) --called the T@b http://www.tab-rv.com/

Oh gosh those things are so CUTE! :aww: My hubby would never go for it though...we borrowed an oooooold (1950s) 13' trailer that was shaped a lot like that (very curved on the inside) for years, and while I adored it, poor Scott had to practically bend over double to stand up in it

Scott's kinda largeish:

What sort of art do you do London??? :D
