What would you do?

I went to the gardening store today and as I was turning into an aisle I saw a cart going out of control and crossing the path of my car and crashing into the back of a Rav4. Hard. I saw a women standing there, just finished loading her car, hands on the sides of her head and mouth in an O. It was her cart that was out of control. These are not just your regular carts, they are gardening carts which are much bigger and heavier.

She walked over to the Rav, looked at the damage, took the cart and moved it to the door of the store, got in her car and drove away. The Rav has a tire holding thingy on the back and that was punctured, and had a large dent.

You are right there, saw the whole thing unfold, watched the women get in her car and drive away. What would you do?

I would have tried to get the tag number, and gone inside to report it to the store manager. Otherwise, I might have left a note for the owner of the car that was hit with my contact information and the description/tag of the car the woman was driving. One or the other, I wouldn't ignore it.

It's possible the store captured it on security video as well.
Cell phone pictures of the woman, the cart hitting the Rav and the tag number of her car.
Then go into the store and have the manager make an announcement, looking for the owner.
I'm not sure that I would have had the mental clarity to get pics, but I would have tried to get the license plate of the offender. I wouldn't have confronted the perpetrator (I think) but If I thought I could be helpful in identifying the culprit (especially if I got the plate number) I definitely would have left a note for the other driver. My note would have had my phone number and the plate number if I got it.
8O some people, I swear!!! I would have gone into the store and told the manager, see if they could page the owner and then tell him/her exactly what I saw and description of the car. There's not really much more you can do. I'm sure it happended so fast that I'd never have gotten my cell phone out in time to take a pic of her or her car to get tag #'s. but I'd have felt better knowing I'd tried to give the owner a description rather than them walk out to their car and get a surprise like that.

I never ceases to amaze me what people will do..... about 2 weeks ago my son had gotten gas and was waiting for traffic to clear so he could pull out of the gas station lot when a woman, letting her teen son (who didn't have his permit yet) drive backed into my son. He said they never even looked. Granted this particular gas station has a very small lot, but that's all the MORE reason to look before you back up. He says he saw them come out of the store, get in the car, and didn't think anymore about it as he couldn't move for the traffic coming. Then POW they had backed right into him. When he got out to look at the damage and speak to her they tried pulling around and driving off. He had to step in front of her car to block them from leaving.
What rdf said, and I can't believe that happened!! Well, yes I can ...but knowing some other people or person saw you, it amazes me that they can still drive off.
I would have taken the number plate of the offender, I don't think I would have taken a pic though, how could you know she was going to drive away? Here in the UK I would have assumed she was getting into her car to get her insurance documents, not sure I would have reacted quickly enough to catch the numberplate.

Report the offender!!
So Pam - what did you do? Did you get the plate number of the offender? Let the victim know?

Me too.
We bought our first car FOR our sheepdog Mady. We managed without a car before, but we want to do a lot with our Mady, excursions, camping, hiking etc. so we got the car. I quite like my new car (not as much as Mady, but still), and in store parking lots I always park it as far away as possible from the store entrance to reduce the risk from rogue shopping carts, poorly opened doors etc. as much as possible.

I did what any self respecting person would do...As soon as I realized she was going to drive off, I got the plate #, went in the store and told them what happened. They found the owner of the car and she called the police and I gave my information.

The girl who owned the RAV was soooooooooooo grateful that I took the time to do this. But I didn't do it just for her, its because some rag just wanted to drive off and that ticked me off.
I would have taken down the plate number and make of car and waited for the owner or had the owner paged by the manager. In 1997 I bought a brand new Camry and someone backed into me in the parking lot at work. A good samaritan took down the licence plate and put it on my windshield. The person who hit me happened to in my building. Her insurance company ended up paying for the damage. I was so grateful for the note left on my car.
