Simon killed the third kitten

I don't know what to think. I only let him outside when I am with him, but he seems to know exactly where they are and gets them. I have tried to find them when he is not outside with me and can't find them. This one screamed. But when I went to the kitten it was too late. They are feral kittens, lots of them in my neighborhood. None of them has puncture wounds. I am beside myself with grief that he had now killed 3 kittens and I can't seem to anything about it.

Sigh. Simon apparently has acquired some skill at catching things.

He is only doing want come naturally. The fact that none of them seem to be injured makes me think he is catching them and playing with them. When they go into shock they are no longer very interesting so he leaves them.

Feral cats are a problem in many areas. There are literally hundreds of them breeding along the river next to the museum where I volunteer. They usually are in poor condition, suffer from a plethora of diseases and never tame very well. If it's any consolation, whenever animal control picks up feral cats, they are invariably destroyed. Simon is doing no worse than our humane societies and is keeping the population under control.
I know this hurts... it's just him being a prey driven dog. My Schip-mix will kill a wild rabbit and there's nothing I can do to stop it. I've tried... I did wildlife rescue so it really bothers me. She'll run down the rabbit in a matter of seconds, kill, then come back to the door and drop it at my husband's feet. She's done it twice. :x Amazing I was able to protect my pet rabbits from her for years.

Is there someone who would take them or is there a feral cat program in your area? If so, contact animal control or the local Humane Society and see if you can barrow or rent a live trap. Havahart makes the traps I have- http://www.havahart.com/store/live-animal-traps/large . I've trapped feral cats, skunks, voles, chipmunks, etc. The only problem is, you need to have a place that will take them or a place to release them (wildlife)...

:ghug:
I know it hurts, having a baby kitten killed but this is what some dogs do. I had a Siberian Husky that killed dozens of baby rabbits. Any rabbit nest in our yard was not safe from him.

Now If I find any rabbit nest in the making I destroy it before they have a chance to give birth there. I'm not sure what my boys would do and I hope to never find out.
If you are concerned that there are more kittens you could try putting out a live trap with a little cat food or tunafish in the trap. Catch the kitten and get ride of the problem all together, your stress and Simon's urge for the prey. If they are young enough they might be tamed and made into house cats. We have a lot of feral cats out in empty barns around here and they use traps to catch the kittens and moms in hopes of having mom spayed and getting the kittens young enough where they can be tamed. you might want to contact a local rescue or vet that does adoptions. My cousin works to get theses types of kittens out of the feral setting if possible.
Why not leash him until the kittens grow up enough to move around on their own?
Darn... that's such an obvious solution. :D
Why didn't we think of that?

If you can't get the cats/kittens out of the yard, limit the dog's access to them.
Ouch.....I found out one of my fosters was a cat hater the hard way!
The cutest little kitten found her way into the yard..
Pancake who is Briard/terrier was not so nice....
I was sick but, that is what some dogs do..
My most lovey bear Pooh(the wheatie) would kill anything rodent looking
He has brought us a few possums
Hang in there ...

That's what terriers do.

I wish Brick had more of his breed's instincts. I once found a mole hole in the ground and he wanted nothing to do with it. I even stuck his snout in the hole and he wasn't the least bit interested. He's more of a chaser & barker.
See if you can trap the kittens and remove the temptation for simon then problem solved.

It happens Kelsey was birds, the chase factor and gobble gobble all gone at least simon did not eat the kittens.
To Simon the kittens just look like a rat or a rabbit, food. He is just following his instincts.
Are we sure the kittens were not already deceased before Simon picked them up?
