SLEEPING POSITON

I was wondering is it a sheepie thing or just Bella....... her preferred postion for sleep is on her back, legs in the air, and chin up. I've always had dogs but she is the only one to sleep like this and I noticed a lot of pics with puppers in the same exact postion :cow:

Good airflow.

Sybil sleeps like this more nights than not because she insists on sleeping on the bed, but gets hot.

You mean like this?

I've only seen sheepies do it as well.
the only ones at our house that do it are hounds - coonhound Maggie and foster basset Harley.

Here's Harley - viewed from above the back of the couch....

not bad for a 12 year old!
We get to illustrate?

Here's Liz with visiting pup, Mojo:

:clappurple: looks like here too! Both Jack and MO will sleep on their backs with various modifications for the "back stroke" with an "arm and leg" extended to the "holding up the wall" position.

They are such silly beasts.
Both Violet and Pearl the cat love to sleep on their backs.

Aren't bassetts wonderful :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
Yes they are :D

PS - you could foster for us (Basset Buddies Rescue) also if you were interested! :bulb:
Dawn - that's pretty brilliant given that bassett rescue is always swamped in this (overall) area and OES rescue generally not so much. Well, MN can be at times, but nothing like the hounds.

Such doggy bliss! I only have one that sleeps like that...
Panda does a modified version due to her hip problems.
She props her legs up on something rather than splaying.

Our Bella will sleep on her back too even thoughwe tell her that is a most unladylike position. I've never had a bog that would sleep on their back before either.
My new old english called Mimi sleeps on her back, bless her she is only 9 weeks, i'm new to old english sheepdogs so any tips, would be a great help.

Thanks

Maria
When Bowie is VERY tired she sleeps on her back. Otherwise she's a spooner, head on a pillow, the whole bit.
Airedales sleep in that position a LOT!!
There's a whole thread with tons of pictures of 'dales on their backs on the Airedale forum.

Hi & welcome from Maryland. You'll get alot of good info on this site. Chauncey is our 1st OES and it has been wonderful for us these past 4 1/2 years.
BTW, I believe that animals only sleep in this position when they feel secure as it is a vunerable position......................Kathy
Patch's favorite position - legs up and head twisted to the side. I love waking up in the morning to two front legs, up in the air, sticking through the doorway - looks like she is praying or "touchdown!"
of course it helps to add a cold air return......

:D Panda has herself all settled nicely into that corner. :D My neck is killing me just LOOKING at that picture.

Oscar only sleeps upside down on his huge bolster dog bed, which is about a foot away from my side of the bed. Hilarious sight first thing in the a.m.

Laurie and Oscar
Guinness always sleeps on her back. When she is in the kennel she usually has her legs proped up on the side with her head against the bars

Daina
bruno loved to sleep like that when he was younger

Bruno is a cutie!!! :D
Charlie likes to get wedged in between two warm bums, but finds that sheepdogs make the best pillows.

Ha, ha they all look VERY comfy.
Where's the bed for the uprights?
I've got lots of upside down sleepie sheepie shots. Here are a few. Sorry, some are blurry as they are cell phone shots.

Image

Upside down Portage in the living room.

Image

Upside down Portage (I think...hard to tell) in the hallway.

Image

And, upside down Rudy during his long drive home in a blizzard (first night we all met) in the back seat of the truck.

Our ThePas used to sleep with his feet straight up the wall, and his body turned completely at the waist, so his front feet were straight out along the floor. I wish I still had a picture of that. It appeared physically impossible, and if he slid away from the wall in his sleep, he'd have his front legs along the floor on one side of him, and his back ones along the floor on the opposite side. You'd swear he'd fallen from atop a skyscraper and landed that way, broken.
I knew I remembered seeing a post describing this sleeping position, I finally uploaded an image of Mady doing just that.

She sleeps like this all the time.
