House training

So, after about 10 months of reading and research and puppy selector quizes, I have finally broken down and gotten my first OES and I could not be happier with her. I am an experienced dog owner, having owned all sorts of breeds my whole life(usually mutts), and am usually pretty good at training dogs. There is one big exception...House training. I usually crate train dogs and that goes pretty well, but Annabelle (my new baby) freaked out in the kennel, screaming and peeing and pooing all over herself like I have never seen a dog do. So I took her out and bathed her, an interesting and fun experience as she is my first longer haired dog, and decided to try leaving her out for the night. She did very well and woke me up and never peed in the house at all, so we have decided not to crate her at night.
She comes to work with me during the day, and is the most wonderful office dog. We have only had one accident in the office, which was mostly my fault for getting busy and not noticing her. She doesn't really let me know she needs to go out, but she is on a very good schedule here and that works fine for me.
The problem is at home. When we are at home, it doesn't matter how many times she goes out, she comes right back in and pees on the floor. Her favorite place to poo is on my otaman(sp) thank God I have an upolstrey cleaner. She doesn't do it at night, only during the day. At night she gets up and we go outside. I can train a dog to do just about anything. At three months we have sit, stay and lay down, but I cannot get her house trained. Admittedly I am not very good at it. My dad always rubbed their noses in it and threw them outside, but I read that is really bad for them and refuse to do it. I have tried catching her and making startling noises and then immediately taking her outside, but it doesn't seem to be working. We go outside every two hours at least and the other dog goes and she will go a little bit and then come back in and pee again. I mopped with that pet odor neutralizing stuff and we go right back out and it doesn't seem to be working. Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks.

My Tiggy was really hard to house train too!! It took months.

First I would check and make sure her health is ok. Although if she's doing ok at work its probably not that.
Tiggy didnt know how to ask loudly enough, especially when she was home with my husband, he gets busy doing whatever and doesnt notice her standing at the back door looking hopeful. I watched her one day, she walked up to the door looked at hubby, walked past it once looked at hubby, almost shrugged her shoulders if a dog could do that and walked over behind the couch to pee.

Three things worked for me. I took her out to potty on lead and no fun was had unless she pottied, otherwise we came back in after 5 or so minutes. And a treat and praise when she did go. You're probably already doing that and it wasnt enough for us. I also trained her to ring a bell hanging at the back door. She gives one gentle ring and then if hubby's not fast enough she rings the heck out of it till he gets up.

And at night, she isnt crated either but as she always slept up against the baby gate to get as close to the bedroom as possible I now pen her with an x pen. She's happy cause she's sleeping in her preferred spot and she doesnt feel too confined as there's no roof on the pen but she's only got enough space to lay down and turn around comfortably.
I put this final stage off for months, as now when we get up I have to fold the pen out of the way to get through the baby gate  but it was the only thing that worked for us. I must admit I was surprised that it made such a difference. I shouldnt have been as that's what all the training I've read says to do but it seemed too simple.

I've been doing it for over a year now and we've only had one accident and she had a urinary tract infection so not her fault.

Good luck.
Welcome to the forum! I wish I could take my dog to work with me too! Ours was house trained when we got him home at 8 weeks, but he was our first dog and we forgot just how often he needed to pee a few times and so he went indoors. We just picked him up straight away and put him outside and gave the 'go potty' command. Every time he had a toilet outside, we praised like crazy and if he went inside, or looked like he was about to (sniffing the floor) then he was picked up & put straight out, given the command and praised.

I think there are threads on here on crate training if you find that you want to do that, just do a search on the forum. I don't know how I would cope without the crate, but everyone is different and every dog is too.

Your dad sounds like mine! It's been a battle trying to explain our 'modern' training methods to him
Hi!!! Welcome to the OES forum!!!

I agree with everything said to far. Especially about taking my dog to work !!!
I got 'Heart' when she was about 8 1/2weeks old and to be honest, my breeder really worked with her
before she came, so she had the idea of going out, but, of course, being a puppy there were
some accidents...  When they happened and I could catch her in the middle of it,
I would say..NOOoooo and immediately pick her up and take her outside, where she would finish.

I wanted her to be able to 'go' on command so I would not have a sopping dog during rainy weather..
so I would wait for her to go and then say...GOOD POTTY!!! (a couple of times) and give her a
couple of good treats! When she was about 4 months old, I began saying GO POTTY as soon as we
went out.

AND after 1,000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 etc...saying GO POTTY!!!
She FINALLY got it about 8 months ago (she will be 3 in June)...

I am now working on GO POO!!! and more often than not, she DOES!!!!
So I think I am almost home free!!!! :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

I did this with my older sheepdog, Pearl, and since she is a therapy dog,
I like her to go before we go into a facility..that way I have no worries about her
being uncomfortable while we visit.

Pearl, 14 years old, pee and poos on command and now Heart does too!!!

A very long process..but well worth it!!!!!!!
Thanks, you guys have been awesome helpful. I decided after reading these that maybe she was playing to much with my roommates yellow lab rather than pottying. I started taking her out on her own and ignoring her till she potties. It seems to be getting better. fewer accidents in the house at least. Lacie, the lab, is a little irritated with me that I make her wait to go out, but otherwise, I am hoping it will work. Keep your fingers crossed.
:crossed: :crossed: :crossed: :crossed:
There's no way Tiggy would have pottied if I took my other dog out with her at first, she would have just wanted to do stuff with him.
Now that she knows the drill I can take them out together. He is more of a dog on a mission kind of dog re pottying so he actually reminds her what they're out there for now. :clappurple:
