Anyone sad when it's grooming time?

Outside of being sad from the work involved ;) ...I'm talking about not wanting to cut your dog's hair (no matts and it looks so pretty), but you're doing it anyway for whatever reason?

I'm almost depressed that I'm about to start grooming Mequpak who looks so pretty now. I just can't handle the amount of hair shedding at this length and "everything else" going on in our life. I usually can go 2 days before HAVING to vacuum again but now it's 2 times a day. If I don't then it's so obvious in certain open areas there is hair. ....under the kitchen table seems to be where a lot of it flies, and I don't want guests thinking they're eating under a pile of hair, so I take a wet cloth and wipe the floor several times a day there. We're not taking any massive chunks or anything, but enough strands to make it look gross to me. I keep going back and forth to whether I should continue what I'm doing or cut his hair. *sighhhhhhhh*

Guess we'll see if I regret it after it's done. I'll probably start soon but get the bulk of it done during nap time. :(

Have you shaved him down before??? I have NEVER brought Heart all the way down..I do get her a (longish) summer cut, but never down to almost nothing. And yes, just thinking about it, gets me sad..

I am thinking IF I do it, it will be because of the St.Louis heat and humidity, to make her more comfortable. We'll see.....
I like them all long & fluffy but in reality, especially as they get older, it is almost impossible to keep up with. I hate to shave them all the way down but I know in the long run it is best for everyone around. My old guy who is twelve...it just isn't fair to make him try to get up onto the grooming table every week anymore. Brush them out really good, shave with a 3-3/4 blade, bathe, dry & shave again to get all the stay pieces missed the first time around. In 6-8 weeks you'll have a really cute puppy cut. Right now I am maintaining 2 in full coat for the national in September. I am looking forward to shorter hair after that. :D
Nope... I'm still stubborn old me  with a distant dream of showing. The weather here is no problem, Ru seems fine with his long hair and we don't have kids so I have more time than others to groom. Sounds silly, but I would be down about having to cut it too. To me, it takes AGES to grow back.
I'm not worried about the weather ...just the time invested with activities outside with the kids increasing because of the nice weather and school about to be out!

It seems to take AGES for my dog's hair to grow back too!

My husband is even bummed and just called to remind me "NOT TOO SHORTTT!!!" He knows how I get.
Haha, so nice that he said that. I can't imagine how you get time to do all you do already, nevermind dealing with 2 sheepies' hair in the crazy season.
I feel the same way.
The only thing that balances it out is knowing that Chewie gets way too hot and it actually can be a health risk for him with all the activity we like to do.
I still am thinking this current cut is short.....very short.... :(
But he is LOVING it and even after a few weeks (the newness has worn off) and he still has lots more energy, I know it is heat related. Of course, the current 45F degree temps are helping too! He is one happy dog :D :D
I love to see that beautiful, flowy long coat too, but it's just not practical with more than one dog and more than one child, IMO! I keep mine clipped, they get groomed every 3 weeks and trimmed every second or third time.

Back when I had one child and one sheepie, I kept him in full coat and spent at least an hour a night brushing him. That's just not conducive to our life these days with three sheepies and three kids, so the long coats are out. Maybe when the kids are more independent or I have less dogs, I'll recommit to the beautiful full coat. Until then, it's puppy cuts all around. 8)
Not with Jack because he loves short hair. MO finally has easy to maintain hair but she still HATES to be groomed. Some dogs enjoy the attention but not my tomboy. So she's up next for grooming.

Mrs. J.......by all means trim with descretion, he is such a lovely boy....but you realize the shedding will continue. Trimming will just reduce overall length, not the density (unless you are also thinning). Plus shorter hair makes looking for ticks so much easier! Even with Frontline we still get a couple per dog. So far, 1 tick on one dog......phew.
I hear you! Langley goes in this Friday for his first shave down. I was going to go with an inch but I think it is going to be more like 1/2 inch. The smell!! yarg! He was sitting beside me last Sunday and I couldn't take it so into the bath. I usually just do the legs and belly and leave the whole body for Ubath so I can blow dry him but I did him all he was still wet the next morning! So it will be nice to not deal with all his fur. He is very long and thick. He doesn't shed much which is nice. Then the following Friday good bye manhood! wah!!

It will be so weird to see him shaved I cannot even imagine!!! He is ten pounds lighter than Laika so he is going to look so little.
I like the short-haired look, almost as much as long. But...the one part that almost makes me want to cry is cutting off the big fluffy "mane" across their shoulders  . On both of my dogs, that area is pure white, and especially soft and silky.

The nasty, pinkish stuff under their bellies gets no tears shed for it, though   .
Nope, not sad at all. If I were, I would be depressed every six to eight weeks or so, as that is how often (ideally) Oscar gets shaved. He goes to the groomer every two weeks for a bath, though I wash his face, paws and "undercarriage" in between, and then gets shaved every third visit. Hubby hates it when Oscar gets shaved, but we really can't help it. If I don't stay on top of Oscar's skin condition, he gets infection after infection. The shorter his hair, the earlier I catch any potential problems and the easier it is for me to bathe and dry him at home if need be. (I never send him to the groomer with a skin infection, so I then do a full bath here at home. Happens much more than I'd like....)

what is wrong with skin? Could be an allergy for shampoo?? I mean if you bathing so often? I had the problem last summer with two dogs, and just before a show - disaster, indeed ! Both after washing with shampoo and it was a good one.
i was so sad shaving dreamer down for the first time duffy i ws happy the way he matts up.. but living in fl and 4 acres with a pond i had no choice but let me tell you they see so much more happy without their long coat .. matter of vact my old daytona would run to me when i brought out the clippers she hates her hair she will start itching and scratching till i save it
Noop it doesn't happen

I am not chopping back my mad hippy dog, yes it has it's down sides matts being one of them a big soggy muddy heap being another.

I really could not imagine seing Archie all skinny and NAKED :cow:

Come the time when I may have to do it for whatever reason them I think I would truely be quite saddened, I would miss the wind moving his coat.

They must be so different :?:
Chelsea,

Oscar has ideopathic Immune Mediated Disease, which basically means that his immune system sucks and they really don't know why. In concrete terms, it means that we are constantly battling skin infections. Due to his crappy immune system, even the most innocuous bacteria can become pathogenic on Oscar's skin and start to take over, crowding out all other bacteria. It's a balance issue. We keep the bacteria levels down on his skin by bathing him frequently in different special (mild) shampoos, based upon the current issue being addressed.

When, in spite of our best efforts, a particular bacteria starts to cause issues (frequent scratching, scabs, etc.), we go to the vet for a scraping and get a culture so we can target the correct bacteria with the best antibiotic. By keeping his fur short, I am able to see his skin well and catch things early. This works for us, in addition to the probiotics and other meds he takes.

Between his skin and his tummy (bouts of IBD, pancreatitis) Oscar is one high maintenance pup! (I'm fairly certain we are putting his vet's daughter through college. :D And his holistic vet's daughter. And his Internist's daughter. And his chiropractor's daughter.......)

We do a puppy cut on both and although its shorter than their winter coat, it is very cute. Its short and easy to keep but still a little hair that looks nice. No one says it has to be shaved tomthe skin. You can cut short and still ahve hair...I call it the "berber rug" look...And its sooo cute and still cuddly!
Okay......... my back is sore, but he's done. Not as good as I think I did last time, and I still have several strands (note the first pic) ...but at least he's going to make my life a little easier. A show person emailed me and said "don't cut the hair between the eyes" ...so what did I do? Ever get addicted to those scissors? I couldn't help myself. I'm so ashamed :( I also like the kneecap down to be longer, but as I'm rounding out the paws... before I know it... it's cut too narrow. I even thought I was being careful!!!!! :? The side is choppy too (pic really is hiding it but a brush out would show it) but I'm tired.

Notice the longer strand of hair on the paw.

I like big butts and I cannot lie... You other brothers can't deny. (I sing this whenever their big butts are in my face ...sorry)

You did a great job. I'd never have the patience to do all that scissoring.
The boy looks good! :clappurple:

With your heat and humidity, he has to be more comfortable.
oooh I can envision Langley now I love it that is a great job. Well after this morning I am looking forward to a short butt. I knew right away the way he was acting he pooped his sheepdog pants right before we were leaving for work! Had to get the chunk out and wash his bum. Still made it to work phew. SO GROSS! My fault I didn't grind his asparagus fine enough eeeeeeeeeewww!

I think you guy is bigger though. Be curious to see how skinny he will look. I am going to put a before and after of Laika up in pictures. I thought she was fat!
He looks adorable, you did a fantastic job!
I am seriously impressed. I think you do a better job than my groomer! He looks terrific!
Wow! That is a fantastic job! Is that all hand scissoring? If not, what the heck blade did you use? Your baby looks awesome!!!! Great Job!!!
lol, I don't know how to use clippers outside of for the belly and paws. Hand scissoring is all I feel comfortable with. Once I figured out how I "thought" people were grooming their dogs ...scissoring them became easier (although time consuming). Before it was a lot more choppy. STILL IS NOW, but not noticeable unless you're really examining it.
You did such a great job!! :clappurple:
He looks gorgeous!! :clappurple:
I'm amazed that you did that with scissors!! 8O
I cheat on my Mom's poodle and use clippers with a comb attachment except for her top knot, tail and feet. I'm in awe.
I am sending my groomer these pics I hope you don't mind  use as an example.

I feel like putting up a countdown timer for Langley's shave. WOOOO WEEEE he stinks! He likes to sit beside me in the car and put his head on my lap. YARG! ONE MORE SLEEP! :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

His fur around his neck is about 8-10 inches long!
Mrs J...... WOW 8O 8O 8O

There is no way I would have the patients (or talent) to do that.

I think any groomer would fall off their chair if you took those pics to them and asked for that cut  I can't wait to see Langley in the same 'suit' :clappurple:
You did an awesome job J.... holy :cow: I wouldn't have the patience to do all that by hand, plus I'd be afraid of cutting the dog with scissors all over so I prefer clippers LOL He looks beautiful.

I think we need before and after pics... it's been a while since we've seen Langley pics :)
When I get home I am taking tons of pics I will probably never have his coat this long again.

It can be done if you want to.... Willy was shaved right down in December and has about 5-6 inches of coat already.... getting him ready to show again :)
Laurie and Oscar
You have all my simpathy!! Never thought that dogs can suffer something like this. Oscar looks like a snowflake, so white and puffy, who could guess you have the skin problem.... tons of care shows and you make your vet's well off, indeed
i dread grooming days. i am a dog groomer so all day i groom other peoples dogs, then at the end of the day in comes billy for a quick brush, this can be upto 8pm some nights, but he sulks and pesteres and looks at me in THAT way if he doesnt get one. his not spoilt at all lol!
then on my day off i get to give him a full brush. i am currently trying to convince my faimily that he needs a hair cut, his hair is now 10" long and is getting hard work, its not as if anybody else bothers to brush him. i would love to see him in a nice puppy cut for the summer.

your pictures are wonderful x
