I have heard of them and saw a brief presentation years ago. I remember it seemed really interesting but complex so unfortunately that's all I remember.

Isnt it part of the basis of chinese medicine and how they decide how to treat an individual's health??
I'm not a hundered percent sure about it myself. Frankies PT also practices chinese medicine in canines. She says that Frankie is a Fire dog, and Thought if we changed his food mostly his protein source that he could cool down a little. Meaning not being so warm all the time, not being so wild. Things like that. I can't see any harm in changing from chicken to fish and have started already. I mostly was curious if anyone else practiced these kinds of things.

Chinese Medicine is based on that five element principle. Basically, according to the system, everything can be catergorized into one of these five elements (body parts, objects, time, directions...everything). It is indeed a very complicated system and I don't even dare to try to explain it because I only know very, very basic of it.

These five elements are closely related to each other...Metal, Wood, Water, Fire & Earth. Each element can promote another while suppress another.

Wood promotes Fire, Fire promotes Earth, Earth promotes Metal, Metal promtes Water

The philiosophy is that wood can generate fire, fire generates earth (after burning things down to ash). Earth generates Metal (like all minerals), Metal generates Water because metal can melt into water.

Since the fundamental concept of the Five Elements is about balance, too much of either one of the element cause inbalance and trouble arises. So counter balance is basically the whole concept of treating a problem.

Along the same concept, it also works the opposite way, Wood absorbs Water, Water deteriates Metal, Metal destructs Earth (think plow) Earth distinquishs Fire, Fire burns Wood.

In this case that Frankie being a Fire dog, less Wood based food will help not to promote more fire where as more Earth based food will eliminate the fire element a bit. The whole concept is to promote the balance in his body.

The same philosophy works on human, say a person whose body is fire based while the other person's body is water based. The person whose body is fire based get acnes problem much more easier than the person with water based body when both consumed a lot of fire based food...like deep fried food.

Hope I didn't confuse you more
