Looking for verification...

Hello!
I was wondering if some of you could email me so I can ask about a certain breeder and if anyone is familiar with her? I know I'm not supposed to add the name here, but I'm afraid to commit to a puppy until I know that she's legit.

Thanks so much!
Sheryl

Is the breeder on the OESCA breeder referral list?
Could you maybe give us a geographical area? Then people who are familiar with breeders in her area could let you know.

I think it's great you're looking for personal references. I checked out my last breeder through official channels recently AFTER a huge issue. His record and references in all official places is spotless now and always was, despite fraud, health issues, and about a dozen other horrors. Then I found some people who had actually gotten puppies from him and it was a completely different story.
No, she is not on the breeder referral list and is not in my area. She is in Iowa. She gave me some names and phone numbers of people to call who received puppies from her and I talked to one so far who said it was a great experience. The puppy would have to be shipped to me. I was leary of that, but have seen a lot of you post here who say they've done it without a hitch.
Usually, referrals only giving glowing references.

You might want to look at some of the stickies under getting a puppy for some ideas of what to ask. Also, you may ask for references of people who got a puppy from them some time ago and now have a five year old or older dog. That will give you an indication if they have run into any health issues with dogs from this breeder.

I know there is a breeder from Kansas whose dogs display hip dysplasia by the time they are six but not usually in the first year.
Oh my gosh, thanks! Now I'm scared!
Okay...I'm just going to say her name...Barbara Roling of Roling Acres.
This breeder has come up before:

I could've sworn this breeder came up before, too because I remember looking at this web site before and having a discussion with someone. There's definitely not a lot of information there. I know it sounds nice to talk about how much they love the puppies but I'm really more interested in what kind of health testing and history her dogs have, what kind of temperaments and what her breeding practices are. I think the love part is implied with a good breeder already!

Can I ask, what brought you to this breeder in the first place?
Thanks everyone! I appreciate the advice and information. I'm looking for a female and found her just by searching on the internet. I almost put a deposit down and am glad I didn't now.

To those who had their puppies shipped to them, how does that work? How do you buy a puppy that you'll never see until it actually arrives?

When buying from a reputable breeder, the breeder will ask you questions about your lifestyle & what you are hoping to do with the dog (just a nice family companion to grow up with your young children, therapy visits, performance events etc.) among other things. By talking to you & asking such questions they then match a puppy to your lifestyle & expectations by watching & evaluating the litter as it grows throughout the 8-12 weeks before the pups are ready to go to new home. Most likely they will also keep you updated with pictures of the litter too. Their goal is to produce a sound, healthy well tempered dog that is bettering the breed & matching it to the perfect family for a forever home. It take a lot of time, effort, commitment & money to do this but a reputable breeder who cares about the bettering the breed does it.

And because of all those things, you'll get a better dog. Nothing is 100% of course, but your chances are much, much better in having a nice, healthy and great looking dog!
I was scared when I started my journey to get another OES too. All the suggestions here will help you make an informed decision.

After the initial email and phone conversations with my breeder, I was amazed at how much information she gave me...and also how much information she wanted from me!!!

Here on the forum, we hear so much about members being leery about getting a pup from an unknown breeder ~~but we rarely hear about the breeder, who is sending the pup, who they have loved and taken care of from the first second of birth..who they cuddled and socialized and tried to give them the best start in life..to someone unknown too!!!

So in my opinion, a reputable breeder WILL ask YOU many questions to make sure their 'baby' will be in a safe, loving home forever!!!!! And if they don't ...run the other way~~~

Good Luck and keep us posted!!!! And we just love seeing pics of babysheepies!!!!! :D :D

She could give you a ton of references to call, but how do you know they actually bought a puppy from her? Seriously, you could be talking to her sister or friend; they would obviously play it up that she is the best breeder ever. If a breeder is not an OESCA member there must be a reason and it isn't a good one. As for flying a dog I've only done it once , from Seattle to Detroit. There are weather restrictions but since Zachary came in May we were fine there. He flew Northwest and they were great.
Do you know which part of Iowa she is from?
I received an OLD English Sheepdog from her and I have been to her farm. It is beautiful and the dogs are all indoors and happy and healthy! Our OES is 7 now and has an awesome personality and has had no health issues and we are on her waiting list for her next litter so we can have 2! She is a fantastic breeder. I would recommend her to anyone!
Given the nature of your post - Could you identify yourself?
