Seeking an OES to adopt

Hi , I'm seeking an adult OES 2years or under to adopt within the next few months. My dear companion, Bentley, is very frail and unable to walk. I've been providing him with palliative care since Jan 04 and he has done very well with a special diet and TLC. However, it is clear that he will not be with me much longer. I am looking after him until he decides that his time is over. It is helping me to start thinking about a sheepdog in need. I adopted Bentley when he was just two years old and he is now 14 1/2 years. He had been living with people who had kept him in a cage most of the time. He and I became good friends, and he travelled with me as I moved from one contract to another: I'm now employed in Health Care in British Columbia, Canada. Many thanks, Lynda

My heart goes out to you. What a wonderful and caring person you are. I don't know of any Canadian rescue groups but there are several people here from Canada and hopefully they can help you. I wish you all the best and give Bentley a big hug.-

Holly
Hi Lynda, welcome to the forum. :)
It sounds like Bentley has been well cared for and very much loved, he will let you know when it's time for him to go.... and until then, enjoy every minute you have with him. Each is a gift.
When you are ready to bring another oes into your life, I would suggest you contact some rescue groups. In Canada the rescue contact is Margaret Trenholm, and her info can be found at www.oesocc.org which is the Canadian club's website. Also, you should contact Grannie Annie of NEOESR. Though they are in the states, they often place dogs all over. You can read more about that on their site www.neoesr.org
You could also keep your eye on www.petfinder.com as there are always lots of dogs that need home on there. Last I checked there were almost 50 oes up for adoption.
Please stay and browse the forum, there is lots to peruse and maybe share some of your experiences wiht Bentley, and a picture or two is always good too! :)
Good monring Lynda.

Sorry to hear about your little buddy. It breaks my heart when I hear about another OES being in that situation. I know how you feel, after being sick for a while, I lost Demi - my 13 1/2 yrs OES in January to cancer. Enjoy every moment with him, speak to him often, give him his favourite treats more often than usual and take some pictures. Just know that when the time is right a new little angel will come into your life and you will love that one as much as Bentley.

Here's a link to some rescue contacts. Check out the ones in the northern western states. http://www.oes.org/html/oes_rescue.shtml

I hope I can find another OES to keep my 9yr OES company real soon and hope that you do too. I'm sure that as soon as you and I see a new ball of fluff bouncing across the front door for the first into its new home, it will put a huge smile on your face and mine.

Hang in there Lynda, you are not alone, remember the good times and our thoughts are with you.

Someone asked me the other day why I would want a big huge OES and why 2 of them - my response was - If I have to explain it, you won't understand it. (I guess only us sheepie lovers understand that).

You can always email directly if you want to share these sad times as I am still a bit blue about my Demi.

Take care.

Pete :)

Uncle Pete, there's no better way to put it. OES love is love at first sight.
Thank you for responding so quickly. I will keep you posted on Bentley's state of health. He's resting and watching me at the computer while the cats, Percival and Edwina, are keeping him company. I will contact the Canadian rescue network and also Grannie Annie. I went for a walk by the river this PM with a friend. I haven't been there since Bentley collapsed 14 months ago. But I was able today for the first time to see that eventually I will have a companion to introduce to the great walks in my area. Lynda
Hi Lynda,

Welcome to the forum! I'm so sorry to hear about Bentley as I experienced the same thing with my previous OES Shaggy last year. When her health was declining I felt I couldn't live without an OES in my life. I had another dog at the time whom I love dearly but it was my son's dog whereas Shaggy had been mine.

In fact, my very post on here was tooting the merits of how my home would be OES heaven. I was looking for a resuce at the time. There are two rescue people in BC, and if you contact me via pm I shall look them up for you. There's not many around the province so it's difficult.

I ended up getting a new puppy from a breeder outside of Seattle , and then unexpectedly was flown a puppy mill OES all the way from Hong Kong! I now have Panda and Merlin the OES in my home and Blue (the BlueHeeler/Lab).

Where in BC do you live? I'm in the Lower Mainland- should you ever want to dog sit (oh please anytime!) or want to meet for a walk.

Take care and hope to hear from you soon.

Marianne
:D Hi Lynda.

While I was looking at different websites for an OES to adopt, I came across this link in Seattle which might be interesting for you to look at. They have a 5 year old now but they have may have what you want in the near future and its not that far away from you.

Might be worth a look.

Take care.

:) Hi Marianne, Thank you for the info. I live in the North Okanagan and commute to New Westminster every few weeks for work: a long story! I now have the names of rescue contacts in BC (2) and Alberta(1) I may take you up on your invitation! Lynda
Hi Lynda. :D

Here's an OES "Herbie" I just saw posted on Petfinder in Vancouver.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Uncle Pete :D
:D Thanks,Uncle Pete! Do you know how old Herbie is? He looks really sweet! I will be in Vancouver next week and could visit the shelter. Lynda
Hi,

I just couldn't believe it!!! Do you know the last Sheepie they had at the shelter was aprox 16 years ago!!! It was probably Shaggy whom I adopted or Big Dog both my previous OES's. They are that rare to find in a shelter up here.

Lynda I contacted them and told them of your interest and perhaps I can visit Herbie this Saturday and obtain more info for you. I do hope everything turns out well and I will keep my fingers crossed.

It's also amazing that I finally get to meet one person from this board as everyone lives on the other side of Canada!

Chat will you as soon as I here anything.

Marianne
Hi Lynda. :D

Nice to hear that Marianne will be able to look into this for you. Hope it works out for you. :D

I'm sure this will also pick up Bentley's spirit and you'll see a change in him. :D

Let us know what happens and post pics!!

Uncle Pete :D
[color=blue] :D Marianne has offered to see Herbie on Saturday if all goes well. I should be able to get to the shelter myself on Tuesday afternoon: I have a meeting in Vancouver in the AM. Many thanks,Uncle Pete, Marianne
Good luck with Herbie :D I hope it works out for you.
Hi,

Here's an update so far, I contacted the OES rescue person in our area to see if she was aware of this boy. Judi Smith, the OES rescue person was aware of him and he's being kept in the pound and not the SPCA. I was told he was a stray so there is no info regarding his background although he is only 1-2 years old, friendly and neutered. The animal shelter has so far not responded to my email but Judi provided me with the info.

The pound has very stringent conditions in which an animal is allowed to be adopted- home checks, contract must be filled out and letter from home owner if the house is rented. So far 8 people (not counting Lynda) are interested in him. 2 have returned their contracts so far...Hurry Lynda!! Contact them for a contract to send and return to them! (I'll call her and inform her in case she doesn't see this message).

I'm still hoping to make it there tomorrow, although I've been having car problems so a bit hesitant to drive until I have my van looked at. I'll keep everyone posted.

Marianne
Hi, I called the shelter and they told me that Herbie is in the process of being adopted by people form Vancouver Island. They suggested
I call back in a few days in case it doesn't go through. Many thanks for your offer of help, Marianne. I will complete a form: I think that they are on the web. They told me that Herbie had been there for 2 weeks with no interest until the OES network heard of him! :) Thanks to all: I will keep in touch and keep looking! Lynda
Hi Lynda,

I'll still keep my fingers crossed for you. Sounds as if he's very much in demand which is a good thing, sadly tho it may mean you may have to wait a little longer for one of your own.

Marianne
:) Thanks, Marianne. Perhaps the time wasn't right. Things seem to happen for a reason which is not necessarily clear at the time! I'm leaving for the coast at noon and hope to call. Cheers,Lynda
