Marley at the vet, ate carpet

Sigh, it never ends.

We moved this weekend so Marley stayed with my friend Sunday and then went to the suburbs to stay with dave's parents for a few days. She must have had a sour stomach because some time last night she ate part of a carpet sample and ingested the carpet fibers, which were long pieces like yarn. She vomited about 5 times day. Dave's dad thinks most of it came back up. Her poop was solid and she peed fine, and she is supposedly acting totally normal. However she didn't eat even when canned food was mixed in and she vomited water. I'm scared it's going to wrap up in her intestines and cause a blockage of some sort.

I feel totally helpless because I'm at work in the city and she isa bout 45 minutes away. My brother's wife is a vet tech and is going to pick her up right now and take her in for x-rays. I'm sitting in work trying not to cry. We'll have to pick them up tonight and then bring them to our new apartment. I didn't want to have them stay there until we had a chance to get it all unpacked and spend time with them there... but there goes that plan.

Please keep your paws crossed for Marley :(

Hopefully just irritation from the fibers and vomiting. Feeding within 24 hours not good idea, vomiting water could still be irritation.
Poor Marley! :ghug: Hopefully it is just irritation and she'll recover just fine.

Keep us updated!
I'm sorry, Heather. Hopefully she won't require any serious intervention. I will think good thoughts for Marley.

They took x-rays and there is something in the stomach, but he can't tell what it is. He's going to induce vomiting and see if anything comes up. Then we will keep an eye on her and if she's still sick then we will do a barium x-ray to see what's going on.

I'm so sad because I have an important hearing tomorrow at 10am so I have to be in for that. Dave can't take off because someone just quit there and they are really busy. Poor puppy. She's got to be so sad right now.
Such bad timing, why are they so good at getting sick when you've no time?

I hope Marley gets better fast. :crossed:
Oh Heather,

Hopefully, if they induce vomiting, whatever is in her stomach will come back up and hasn't moved into the intestines.

My heart is hurting for your right now, I've been in this position and know exactly what you are going through.

Everything crossed on my body that it all ends well.
Oh the poor baby! Hope it passes soon. Keep us posted.
Good thoughts coming your way for Marley. Let us know how things are going. :ghug:
oh poor thing. I hope it all comes up and with some loving she'll be good as new.
Oh, poor Marley! And Heather, and Dave, and in-laws, etc. Crossing fingers, arms and paws for a quick resolution. :crossed: :ghug: :crossed:
We were sent home from the vet yesterday with some laxative-paste and pepto. She had both yesterday with some bread to help push everything out. She vomited twice at 1am and 4am. She is not interested in food or water, seems bummed out too. I have to go to court so I'm having a friend check on her at 10. I'll probably come home early and make a decision on whether we want to do the barium x-rays. Vet said he wanted to see her again if she was still vomiting, so we probably will do them.

On top of all that rudie snatched a piece of the bread with the laxative paste on it from Mar yesterday and kept us up all night with diarrhea.

Keep paws crossed for my little girl.
I hope Marley is doing better.

I have a good friend Adam who's female Colorado Bulldog died from eating some carpet. She was a fabulous weight pull dog and a total sweetie. She got an obstruction and tear of her intestines after ripping up and eating part up her carpet square in her crate. They couldn't save her, it was too far gone....

After that I am absolutely anal about carpet around dogs. No carpet squares in crates. If I have a ravel I trim off one of the throw rugs, it goes in the closed garbage which no dog has access to.
Poor Marley. We are keeping her in our thoughts.

You hang in there too Heather.
Thanks guys. I feel so bad for her, she's such a sensitive girl she looked so sad today.

Vet said keep giving her pepto and if she's still puking by tomorrow then we're going back in. I think he thinks it's inflammation. I don't want to say that and jinx it, but I'm hoping he's right.
Poor Marley. I hope she feels better soon.
She puked three times this morning, my friend who checked in on her had the pleasure of finding that. She said it was brown, looked like coca cola. The vet thought itw as from the brown laxative paste and wasn't worried. He thought it was more inflammation because I didn't give her any pepto. We forced some down her throat, and she has been fine so far.

I took the day off tomorrow so I can be with her. My boss is a dog lover (just got a mastiff puppy) and was very nice about it. We're all tryin to hang in there, but keep paws crossed.
I just read this. I'm glad you have a good boss, and you get to be there. Thinking of Marley...
Just saw this post. Hope everything turns out ok for Marley. Keeping out fingers crossed.
Hope Mom and family are doing ok to.

Keep us updated.

Poor Marley and poor mom :( . If you have a fairly large syringe (no needle) fill it with pepto and squirt it down her throat. You have a decent chance of her getting enough to do some good.
Poor Marley. I am so glad that you are able to hang with her tomorrow.

I want to make you aware of an experience I went through. My last sheepdog, Quincy, vomited dark brown matter and it turned out to be partially digested blood from a perforated ulcer in his stomach. Marley's is probably from the paste, and the inflammation, but if you're unsure about how she's doing, trust your instincts.

Will be keeping Marley in my thoughts.

Laurie
Hi Heather - I will keep you, Marley and family in my prayers. It must be so scary!!! Please keep us updated on her progress!

Update on Marley? I am not liking the attempting to vomit with the brownish color to it...Glad your vet is on top of this. To me it sounds like something may be blocking her up a bit...What dd they see on the ex-ray? Just remember, if you see any strings coming out from the behind, or even from the mouth, do not pull it. Go to the vet. Pulling a string that might be somehow caught up and twisted in the intestines can be a problem.

Hope all gets better...You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
Thanks so much for all your well wishes and thoughts/suggestions. This forum helped me so much when Rudie had the cob stuck in him, so I'm glad I can count on you for my Wheaten troubles too!

No more vomiting. She had diarrhea twice, first time was when we weren't home so Dave found it in the kitchen. He said he there was stuffing from a toy and some string in there. Second time was dark brown, looked like the paste.

She has been her regular happy tail wagging self since then. She also seemed to be hungry. We will continue with the pepto and keep an eye on her, but I'm hoping the worst is over.

I've been calling my sister in law/vet tech every few hours, I'm so lucky to have that luxury!

Yes, I definitely have to invest in one of these! thanks for the suggestion.
Oh good. Hopefully she is all better now.
Hope all is still going well with Marley.
We woke up and found that last night she had explosive diarrhea in the kitchen. She had string hanging from her butt still. After pulling it (even though I screamed at him not to) a few inches Dave cut it. Then she went out and pooped few more inches that we had to cut out. So there's still more in there. The diarrhea was liquid and dark brown again. Dave thinks it's still from the laxative paste (she had a whole tube) but I'm of course worried.

I'm waiting for the vet to get in at 8. She's all cleaned up and seems ok for now. What a morning...
Ok, this is becoming the poop play by play. Haha, sorry for all the details but I actually used it when talking to the vet so thanks for being my poop diary, oes.org.

She just went outside and pooped out 6" of string. No diarrhea, just had some dark solid poop attached. She got it all out with no pulling or cutting. So maybe that's the last of it? Stay tuned...
Poor little thing... what an adventure! Give her extra hugs
ah that poor girl! hope the worst is past. ha
Oh my what a time you are all having!
I hope things are getting better.
So, did all the string pass? Hope all is well and waiting for an update...Maybe you are just exhausted from the ordeal! Looking forward to hearing that everything passed without problem!
I think that was all of it. No diarrhea since yesterday morning. She ate i/d canned food for dinner last night and breakfast this morning. She is back to her bouncy self. We're still at a 'wait and see', but my gut says she passed it all and she will be just fine :)
:yay: :yay: :yay: :phew: :phew: :phew: :yay: :yay: :yay:

Glad everything....'worked out'...... :D :D
If you saw the stuff Brick has passed, you'd fall off of your chair.
I once found a scrunchy in the yard. And it wasn't in it's natural shape anymore.
Or whole "movements" made out of string & bits of blanket shaped in the typical shape.
I'm tellin' ya you wouldn't believe it.

But that's one of the nice things about terriers. They are built tough.
Thank God! I'm just catching up and was so worried reading these posts!

I think ultrasound is the way to go for lots of these types of ingestions, but the charge is $200 for an ultrasound vs relatively short money for an x-ray, so I don't know if that has figured into the recommendation or not.

Woo Hoo for no more Silly String!

Mopsy was one of those - we called it "poop surprise".
It wasn't until we scooped the yard that we found out sometimes what was missing. Although she had a preference for paper - kleenex, card board, paperback book covers, etc.

She had a lot of health issues but her stomach wasn't one of them - it was made of cast iron.

Asterisk likes to eat her plushies eyes first before she destroys them. I can't even count how many poops had a set of eyes in them.

Just catching up on posts. It sounds like you guys have had a really crappy week (pun intended :) ) Glad to hear Marley is feeling better, and hope you have made it through the worst of it.
