wont eat !!! help

Here's the deal ,. sadie ( our 5 year old ) wont eat.
she hasnt eaten in a week, and we havnt the foggyest why.

we double checked around in her mouth today, found nothing out of the ordanary , no absesses, no swelling, no redness, no "other" disscolouration.

palpatated her tummy, nothing new there either , no strange hard spots ( or soft spots) no discomfort was displayed when we did it either,

we havnt really changed anything either, no one's moved, no new pets, no new furniture, we didnt change her food, or her dish, or where her dish goes, or the time we feed her ...

it's not like she doesnt have an appitite... she wants to eat whatever we're eating ( of course we're not sharing ... ) and wht the cat is eating and she's doing the regular sniff the entire floor and make sure nothing was dropped ...

she just has no interest in her own food .

... is there anything else i missed when i was thinkin' up what it might be ?

Quite frankly, if my dogs pass up more than 1 meal (and I mean literally don't touch a kibble) & I know they aren't on any medication etc. that could be casuing the lack of appetite, they are off to the vet. My dogs live for meal time.
if it was another dog ( like tor or mira or trinity ) i would have run to a doc. but sadie occationally goes a day or two where she doesnt want to eat .. and if someones not home ... she doesnt want to eat .. etc etc.
My vet said you should change food every so many years for interest and nutritional value...when I lost my first OES at 8 the doctor thought being that many years on the same food may have contributed to her digestive problems. Rosie is 10 now and we just changed her to a better food that will help her as a senior...she wasn't eating as well...now she can't wait for that food dish to hit the floor. I guess they are alot like humans...I wouldn't want the same meal twice a day for years...hopefully there isn't anything wrong...I would check with the vet to make sure.
Honestly, I'd be very concerned if one of my dogs hadn't eaten in a week. Could be an obstruction, liver problem or any number of other things. My advice would be to see a vet.
My first thought would be you've got a bad bag of food. Even if you don't see or smell anything wrong with it a dog would long before people.

A week is way too long, I'd go get some fresh food and try that and if not I'd get the dog to the vet.
I'd say go to the vet right away. A week is too long. One or two meals, maybe...but a whole week would be scaring me to death.

If nothing is wrong at least your vet might have some suggestions. I wouldn't wait any longer.
I agree with what everyone's saying. A week is a very long time for a dog to be off food.

Me? I'd throw away the current dog food and bring in a new bag. Put a call in to the mfr. to be sure there's no recall on the product, maybe switch foods all together anyway. Darn it, last year my pack had two bouts of vomiting and I only found out just a few weeks ago that Wysong had a dog food recall due to too high a moisture content that could cause mold. https://www.wysong.net/moreinfo.php Fortunately, we did switch all kibble and treats the second time to rule out bad food and it fixed the problem.

I always do blood work and a urine test if a dog seems off. It can give me a little advance notice about what might be going on. Did it this week and found Darby's Lipase level is higher than what it should be. :| Watching her closely for pancreatic issues and will retest next week.

That was my first thought. Their noses are far superior to ours, they can pick up rancid way before us. She may also have developed a problem with a certain ingredient and avoids it. My Simone and wheat.

How about people food? Will she eat rice and ground beef......or anything? If absolutely nothing, then I'd be visiting a vet.
will she eat other stuff? if so suspect the food, can't hurt to switch anyway, but if off everything then get to the vet.
Any update? I agree with what everyone else is saying. I am hoping for some good news. :crossed:
Definately recommend she be vetted - and then change foods. If she will eat "people food" then she has an appetite. I'm not a big fan of commerical dog kibbles. Some great non-commerical kibbles are Evo, Orijin, Wysong and many others. There are also some great home cookied diets and prepared. I'm hoping more vets are recommending variety as opposed to the 1 dog food suits all dogs all of their lives.

For tummy upsets - hamburger or chicken and brown rice is tough to beat - PLEASE let us know what your vet says and or what the status is.

Best wishes,

Katherine Smith
You need a Vet visit asap. Just to make sure.

All the advice given is great. I would change the food...after the visit to the Vet. Is your dog drinking ok?
NO vet needed !

she's all better now ... it's the darndest thing ! ...

it snowed today ( all day ) and tonight she came in and ate.
Amazing.

I'm so very glad she's ok.

Does she get the human treats for which she begs?

haha HECK no !

not when she wont eat her supper ... and she doesnt get anything she begs for ... on occation she gets things that were dropped ... and sometimes she'll get carrots and bits of scraps if she's been really good ...

but if she wont eat kibble we're not going to reward her for it.
Tough love
