Apartment showings: am I being neurotic?

We're moving in 2 weeks and my current landlords are still trying to get the apartment we're in rented for May 1. They have shown it maybe 8 times already and we have been very flexible. They recently hired an apartment finding company to show the place, so now I'm getting calls from these apartment agents asking if they can show the place during the day, when Dave and I are not home. The problem is the two dogs will be here and 1. Rudie will follow them around all over the place barking, 2. Marley will do a happy pee at the door, 3. I know that Rudie won't bite, but I don't want to take that chance anyway, and 4. We are very particular about where we place everything, what cabinets we leave open, and what doors we leave shut so that Rudie does not have a trash party in here.

Amy I being inflexible or neurotic by asking that they only show the place when we are home to take the dogs out? Dave gets home by 3pm so they have all evening and any time on the weekends. Part of me feels bad, but part of me does not want strangers in my home with my dogs.

What would you do?

I think you are being completely reasonable. You should check your lease to see if it sets any notice/entry requirements that benefit you in this situation. I would not feel bad at all especially since you have offered afternoons, evenings, and weekends. And any potential renter should be gratified to know the landlord will consider the tenant's needs and not just barge in -- he can make that a selling point.
I wouldn't want to show when I'm not home. I totally understand your point of view. I don't think it's unreasonable at all.
I just sent an email to my landlord telling her the situation and asking her to give times to the apartment finder guys when they can show. She's incredibly nice and a dog owner, so I'm hoping she understands my situation. I just feel bad because it's coming down to the wire and they don't have tenants for next month yet.

I don't have my lease handy but I'm pretty sure it's either 24 or 48 hours notice that they can enter the apartment. Either way this guy today gave me less than 12 hours notice (he emailed me at 1am, what a dope). And I guess if it came down to it I wouldn't mind so much if my landlord showed the place, but I don't trust these apartment finder guys.
Trust your instincts! I think they are right on. I hope the landlord understands. She should.
You definitely should have the dogs crated when strangers are in the apartement - what if they left the door open and your dog scooted out?
NOT HOME..........NO SHOW, NO GO, .......WHEN YOUR GONE........HELP YOURSELF, TILL THEN YOU PAID FOR PRIVACY AND SECURITY !!!!!!!!!
You are being completely reasonable. Heaven forbid, what if one of your dogs got out? What if someone didn't put things back the way they were and Rudie got into something harmful?

I know you want to help out your landlord because you are a really nice person, but unfortunately, it's not your landlord that is bringing people through your place. These folks are strangers.

Personally, I would not allow anyone in my house while Oscar was home alone......unless they are coming to walk him of course. :)

No, not unreasonable in the slightest. I'm super paranoid of people coming into my home without me there. You never know what people could interpret from dog behavior. If Rudie barked and the person was afraid of dogs, their fear would seem to escalate.

I think for everyone's peace of mind and safety of the dogs, showing the home when someone is home is reasonable.
I agree with above. You could further defeat their viewing by locking all the cabinets when you are away. Bicycle cable locks wouldn't harm the handles and frustrate the people.

Your dogs' barking is their natural protective side, don't apologize. Someone has invaded their territory and probably showing some nervousness which futher excites the dogs.

Let limits to show times.
Thanks for the reassurance. My gut definitely says I don't want these guys coming in. We have a dog walker but we literally had an hour consultation explaining every intricacy and I had references. I don't know who these people are!

This guy hasn't called me back so I'm a little nervous that hes going to show it anyway. I left him a voicemail and email with the times they can show it.

The good thing is that we live in the 9th floor in a condo building so even if they slipped out they couldn't go anywhere.
I totally don't think you are being unreasonable. And even if you
know your dog wouldn't bite, you never know about the people
that might be in your home.
I had that experience, and I got irate
and probably unreasonable about it. I gave the realtor explicit instructions,
and I was very flexible about it but they did it anyway.
I called the realtor the day it happened and told him
that I would expect my dog to bite the next time and at that point it
would be an unexpected visitor - their fault. People are just idiots, and
they don't listen.
(the funny part of the story is that it wasn't even my house, it was a rental.
the landlord was mighty angry at me. We had made an offer on the
house too. They rejected our offer outright and ended up settling for about
$17k less two months later. HAAAAA hahha hahhahahaha! neener, neener, neener. :clappurple: )

First I wouldn't let a stranger in my house without my hubby or myself being there. You are doing your Landlord a favor by allowing potential renters to come threw your house while you are there. I would also expect 24hr notice to show the apartment. That is not asking too much of your Landlord.
The bottom line is it is yours until May 1. You are being very generous and they should appreciate that. I would ask if these people are bonded/insured since they are strangers to you and you have no reason to trust them.
Dave just got home and called to tell me that Rudie had taken all the dishes and glasses out of the sink. We left our dishes in there last night cause the dishwasher was going and he must have taken them out one by one. None were broken so I think he is very methodical about his naughtiness.

So we were joking that we hope they came and showed the apartment and walked in on that mess!
WOW!! so part Border collie ;)
