Meaning of your dog's name

What does your dog name mean or the meaning behind why you chose the name :)

I named Laika after the first dog is space. I love russian names I tried to find a russian boy name for Langley but just could find the right one.
I named Langley his name because I wanted another L name to go with Laika and me (Lisa) :) and liked the sound of it too.

The boy's name Langley \l(a)-ng-ley,lan-gley\,
also used as girl's name Langley, is of Old English origin, and its meaning is "long meadow". Place name: Langley, Virginia is home to the Central Intelligence Agency.
So Langley's name is:
Lakesong's Long Meadow

Laika
Name of a famous Russian dog. Laika was launched aboard Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957 by the Soviet Union. She was the first living creature in space. There was no way to return Laika to earth so she died in space about a week after the launch. The name means "barker" in Russian.

Very good topic :D

Chewie is named for Star Wars - Chewbacca. Most of my family (not me and daughter Lisa) are sci-fi and Star Wars fans. Chewie's Dad's reg. name is Shaggybear's Skywalker and his call name is Luke - so he fits right in.
His reg. name has absolutely nothing to do w/ Chewie - Masquerade Alice Acres Madness. Masquerade - kennel name, Madness - litter name (after Mad Dog, his mom :D ), and Alice Acres is our farm, on the shores of Lake Alice.

Simon came with his name as a rescue - when you get a 6 yr old basset who knows his name and comes - you don't change it! ILP'd him as Alice Acres Simon Says.

Riley the rat terrier was named by Todd - he just liked the name. He is ILP/PAL'd as Alice Acres the Life of Riley.....yeah, he has it good!

Maggie rescue coonhound came with the name - and it fits her.

Tazz the min pin is a spazzzzz, need I say more? He actually came w/ the name at 11 months old, but it works.

Biscuit the lab pup - Todd's naming, he calls him the biscuit hound...

and foster basset Harley - came with the name. I hate it, as it is so overdone in bassets (that and Flash - gag me!). If he wasn't 12 years old, I would rename him!
  uhmm

Marley's registered name is Margaritaville and Morgan's is license to chill. Marley is for Bob Marley and means from the Boundary Field, its an English name. (for obvious reasons)

Morgan was named after Captain Morgan from the song Two Pina Coladas (sail away with Captain Morgan and never leave dry land). It has many meanings, but the celtic meaning is lives by the sea.

I needed names that began with M, had musical and water connections (and apparently celebrated drinking ;) )
Walter is named after the guitarist in a band called the Gorilla Biscuits. The guy was pioneer for new york punk music. Also, it's a cute old mans name.

Marley was named by Dave before I met them and is after Bob Marley. She is pre- book and movie

Rudie was named after the term "Rude boy" which refers to ska/reggae fans in Jamaica and the UK. There's a lot of songs that reference "Rudie" including "A Message to you Rudie" by the Specials and "Rudie Can't Fail" by the Clash

I didn't realize that all three were inspired by music until just now!
i seemed to name all my dogs strating with d'' not sure why of course duffy he looks irish to me
now dreamer hum my dad said that is one stupid name for this puppy 12 months later we all agreee it fits him perfect 90% of the time he is in dream land
Wendel came to me at 3.5 years old with that name from my breeder. She had gotten him from another breeder and that was his kennel name; Harley Wendel Watson. She loved the name and it suits him. I looked up 'Wendel' as a name and it means wanderer. He doesn't wander much, only when we are at the dog park and he wants to get loving from all the uprights.

Asterisk is more simple to explain. I'm an English major and as such, have a fascination with English characters and grammar terms. I had told Josh if we ever had a child and it was a girl, I wanted to name her Star. Josh said that sounded like a stripper name, so it was a no.

It took him over a year before he realized that an Asterisk is a star. We also have cats that I named Ampersand (&), Ellipsis (... ) and Hyphen ( - ).

Grandma Schlueter always calls Asterisk, Apostrophe on accident, so I told her the next OES we get will be named Apostrophe.
My first guy was "Jake" which I believe is Old English for "counter surfer".

My current rescue boy came with the name "Mulligan" which is purrfect for a rescue dog -- a "Mulligan" is golf slang for a "do over", or a second chance.

Haha yes yes, we can spot em from a mile away now so we always beat them to the punch.
Rufus means 'red haired'. OK so I didn't think that through  But his favourite colour is red

I knew after watching Bill & Ted that Rufus would be his name, I just had to wait 18 years to get him!
Zeke was a rescue that came with the name.
He knew his name so well and came when we called him by it, we decided to let it stand.

Brick was a little different story.
When my ex told me she wanted an Airedale, I asked if that was the dog with the brick shaped head.
After looking at some 'dales (puppies and adults), I was sold on them.
We had a hard time picking a name for him. We threw out a lot of names on the 17 hour ride home from getting him.
I don't think we had a name for him for the first couple of days.

So my ex says she wants to name him Brickhead. I said what?!?! She couldn't get it out of her head ever since I asked if they had the brick shaped head. Well we compromised (I guess) and named him Brick. I still thought it was a stupid name at the time.

Within weeks, however, it became clear that Brick was the perfect name for this dog. He is hard-headed, stubborn, and tenacious.
And as he turned into an adult, his name started to fit even better.
Brick is an EXTREMELY muscular dog. When he stands up in a window or on the door, he has a deep-V taper to him, like a guy that works out. He has a small waist and then big ol' legs that come sticking out. He's a beefy dog for his size.
At that time, we'd often say that he's "built like a brick sh*t house".

Yeah, so looking back, there would have been no better name for this 'dale. It suits him to a T.

I would register him if I could swear in his registered name (can you?) or at least allude to it like I did above.
Summers kennel name is Daisy proclaimer girl, but we had not had a summer that year so that is why she is summer. Tillys full name is chantilly lace just because I liked the name....
Mequss'uk (full name) just means Shaggy dog ..and that fits. Wanted a name from Alaska. We call him meh-ko-buck or ko-buck most of the time.

Yuki means lucky

As far as registered names... I still haven't turned in my paperwork for either dog.

... I thought dogs were color-blind. I always tease Josh that at least he and the dogs have something in common.
Violet came from the Rescue at 9 mts old with the name Vilet, so I threw in the "o" because I didn't want people to think I didn't know how to spell violet and we kept the name. With Violet being Wall Eyed her name really fits her.

China came to us with the name "Pale Face". I selected the name China because her face is so white and her eyes so blue she reminded me of fine china.

Asia came to us with the name "Sparkles." I decided on the name Asia because of her beautiful black, straight hair and beautiful dark brown eyes.

We named Pearl the cat "Pearl" because she is an all white cat. :D
BRANDON was a soap opera character. I was constantly asked if it was in honour of Brandon, Manitoba. It wasn't, but a pattern was born.

Portage is a city in MB, and it seemed like a good way to honour BRANDON (he left us way too soon). Portage's middle name was Pavlov. He drooled a lot when food was around.

ThePas is named after The Pas (pronounced the paw). It's a town in northern MB. However, an angry Texan (you can't make this stuff up) pronounced it THEEP US, while yelling at my hubby (and he wasn't actually angry at my hubby) so that stuck. His middle name was Darwin. He was the most highly evolved dog I've ever know. He and Portage were littermates. We miss them both dearly.

So, the pattern continued. We named Hudson after the bay and apparently there's an island. A good friend of mine had a baby around the time our Hudson arrived. She kept her name choice a secret and sure enough they match. She wasn't impressed then, but we do laugh about it now. Hudson's middle name is Galileo. (And Hudson was so evil as a puppy he spent most of his time under "arrest" and confined.)

When we rescued Rudy he came with the name. The rescue named him, and the lady who did it had a story about a character from a movie. We wanted to honour that. I scoured the maps of Manitoba and found a small, wild area in the north. Nothing but trees and caribou I imagine. It was called "Ruddock" and classified as an "unorganized area." I've no idea what it means, but he officially became Ruddock Einstein. I don't know if he's grown into the middle name yet, though. He is a good writer, but tends to fall bum first off beds and get locked in bathrooms a lot. Time will tell I suppose.

And that's the story of our names.

Wowwwwwwwwwwwww. Civ was a name I considered for Clyde. Who would've thought that two dogs had possible GB related names on here?

That is so weird! This is the last place I'd expect to find another Gorilla Biscuits fan :)

A friend of mine has a cat named Justice after the Project X song Dance Floor Justice. Our dog's should form a gang.
Pearl........when we saw her at the Humane Society, her name was Jordan, which I loved..but Dino took one look at her and said...Pearl...her name is Pearl....

Cozmo....I got to name him and I love Cosmopolitan's ~~~~so there!!!!! :D :D

Heart????....
Ali named her because of the white Heart on her side...I loved it, it was soo purfect and she is my.........HEART :hearts: :hearts: (Dino calls her Jelly...go figgure!!)
This is real complicated - Patch has a patch on one eye and eyeliner on the other.

Her name was Abigail or Abby for short. She just didn't look like an Abby and I wanted her to start her new life with a new name - the vet said she probably was just shy of a year old. The only regret about her name is I have to say she is a girl because the name could fit either gender. Next name will be a girl's name. In the meantime, I love my Patch girl.

Actually recent research suggests that they aren't color blind but can see only a limited range of color, which, I suppose is technically color blindness just not in the sense that they only see black and white. ;)

Kenley is an Old English word meaning from the kings meadow .
