Update from another post. Max had to stay at the Vet's.

Took the poor fellow into the Vet's office--- If you didn't read in general topics, he has had horrible squirts and not eating or drinking. This has been going on since Tuesday eve. Took him in, and doc said he was dehydrated. They also need to do a full blood work up to rule out things beyond the normal gastric issues. No word yet on those results. I just called and he is resting comfortably in one of the horse stalls ( they thought with his explosions, it would be better for him, and, he can walk around versus. being caged. With his back issues-- he needs to be able to stretch and move easily)

Poor guy. This is the first time he has had stomach issues for any length of time. We are going to miss him tonight.

I think the vet did it as much for me as Max. I hurt my back lifting him into the CRV and can hardly move right now. Couple that with a sick dog to clean up after and an MS flare up, I think he took pity on our household.

That- and the fact they love Max, and have always been great to him. We have all been through A LOT together. As John says... he is our 10 million dollar baby.
Aw, poor Max! Here's hoping a night on IV will perk him right up.

Hugs to Lori and John too! :ghug:
Poor Max! I'm glad though because they will be able to take good care of him and you will have less laundry/cleaning to handle. I hope he gets well quickly.
I hope Max has a good night tonight. :D
And that you get good results tomorrow with his labs.
Rest up your back and get a good night's sleep.

:ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
Get better, soon ~~~Max... :ghug:
Poor Max! Heal!
Any update on Max today?
Well-- our boy is still at the Vet's. While he is eating a bit, and taking water, he still has watery, bloody diarreha. The Vet doesn't want to let him go until he at least has loose stools vs. the other stuff.

He is being given an antibiotic, meds to coat the stomach, meds to slow down acid production, meds to stop the diarreha, meds to hydrate, and a bland diet. What ever he got into was wicked, because he typically has a tummy of steel.

Poor little ( 80 pound) guy :(

Hopefully we can get him home today. On a good note, his blood work looks GREAT. Perfect levels on all his results. :D
This is probably a stupid question, but did they check for parasites in his stool?

Another question; was he eating a bone at all before this started up?
When Zeke would eat a bone, it would mess up his system badly!
The doc said that the little shards that break off when they eat a bone scratch up and irritate the HECK out of the intestinal lining, causing the explosive diarrhea (sp) & other nasty symtoms.

Needless to say, Zeke never got another bone after that.

Yes-- they checked for parasites, and he is clear. No bones. Max is a really strange dog. He doesn't like to eat bones, meat, or any table scraps. BUT, he will eat a dead animal (always leaves the bones and fur) in the blink of an eye.
Patient is home and resting comfortably. They should be opening the new "Max" wing at the vets very soon....
I'm glad he is well enough to be at home. :D
Any cause found for his GI upset?

Well.... John found a half eaten rabbit behind the barn today. Not sure, but that could have been the cause. He typically doesn't have tummy upsets, so what ever it was really played havoc with his system. Doc said he was a mess, in more ways than one. 8O

He seems to be coming along well, but is weak. He is still on a bland diet, along with meds for appetite, diarrhea, meds to coat stomach and an antibiotic. He seems happy to be home. John has been planting trees today, and Max has followed him all around. I tried to keep him in, but he whined around like a baby. He seemed to want the excercise, and it was cool and windy out, which he loves. I am STILL torn about where to put him to be bed tonight... He has a nice little garage apartment, complete with heat, but, I hate that...I am also still down with this back, and the thought of mass clean up isn't appealing either. I think I am cruel...

You are NOT cruel. I would not hesitate to keep him in the comfy warm garage until his stomach has recovered. You will be able to take better care of him if you don't have major worries about cleanup. He knows he is home and he knows you love him. Don't beat yourself up over it.
:ghug:
I am just catching up wthi this post. Sorry to hear about MAx but glad to hear he is home! My babies each had some stays overnight due to dehydrationSo i know how great it is to get them home.

Not too familair with eating rabbits. But to my dumb mind, that sounds like it might have been the culprit...Don't they carry some illnesses and parasites?

As far as what to do tonight...can he stay in a crate in your room? So you an hear him if he "needs" you, yet he won't make a mess in the crate? His usual home in the garage sounds very comfy but I would want to be able to hear him during the night in case of vomitting, etc since he is just getting over the dehyrdation? The "run of the house" would be too much for you, and you still wouldn't really be able to minitor him for any problems, but in your room, perhaps in a crate, or with the door closed, might be a good spot tonight?
Yay for Max being home! :clappurple:

Booo for vet bills
