an energetic, nipping puppy

[b]We are thrilled to finally have our puppy with us and he is an absolute doll! He is 9 weeks old now and has adjusted to his crate wonderfully. He also sleeps through the night - bonus!

We have two children 8 and 5 years old - George really feels he has the right to nip at them steady! He wants to play and they just don't understand that. How do I stop him from nipping at the kids? He pretty much knows better than to try it with me! Thanks for any advice you can give us...

Sincerely,

George's family

Dear George's family

I think all oes puppies do this, my bug guy was always nipping, I think it has to do with their herding instincts.. I found that when ever my guy went to nip we always had a toy handy to shove in his mouth or distract him with. Just let him know that it is a lot more fun to nip on a toy than on your feet, ankles, hand etc. When my guy was a puppy i can remember having tiny bruises all over the back off my legs were he use to nip me.They do grow out of it, now my dog has learned to kiss, kiss, kiss. Make sure when he nips to give a strong firm NO command, he will eventually get the message, it is a lot harder for them to take seriously the childrens commands than moms. You can also try turning him away when he does this so that he knows he is not getting the response he wants, eventually he will just look to please, and he will get the message.

Good Luck
PS He is beautiful,
Dawn
I would also suggest you give the kids a command to use when this happens and encourage them to use a strong voice. I predict he sees the kids more as equals in his "pack" or family rather than someone he needs to respect as yourself. If the kids are able to correct him, this may decress the nipping episodes.
When you all say they "grow out of it" around what age are you talking about?

Cindy & The Monsters
Maddie was her wosrt around 8 mo. old. The teenage years in a dog's life. During this time she was really testing her limits in a wide range of areas trying to see if she could be the boss. When she realized who was in charge and there wasn't to be any arguing about it and how she fit in to the "family pack" she was much improved.
