Behaviorlist

Frankie had a one on one appt with the behaviorlist Tuesday night. I really want to work out his touching of his ear issues he's having. The trainer is great. We worked on a game called touch which was kind of neat. A distraction technique. I have mentioned in other posts that I was considering starting Frankie in Therapy classes. I had kind of got it out of my head with his vet issues after his surgery. She got to see Frankie one on one Tuesday night. She metioned him being a therapy dog. She thinks as long as his surgeries don't change his personality that we should move forward with the training. The next class is in June. Yeah!!!!!

I'm thinking Frankie has something in common with some of the patients. He can tell his story now. :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

I'm not good with children, but they might appreciate the dog going thru surgery also.

keep up the training .. this happen to me and my derby after his surgery sadly after that we tryed to do the test and he passed all till she touched his back end .. he turned on her like better not .. she was nice and told me to work it it .. good luck you will love it ..
Lisa, first let me say how I feel for all that you and Frankie have been through the last year.I'm glad things are finally looking up.
As far as using Frankie as a therapy dog. How stable are his hips and knees. What is his response if his hip or leg is knocked into. How would he respond if someone leaned into his backside or tripped on him? Even if he didn't respond aggressively whould these actions hurt him. Unfortunately all of these things can happen to your dog when you are using them in therapy work. No matter how carefull you attempt to be confused people grab, toddlers trip, children kick, and dogs can get jostled in a crowded evalator. Are Frankie's joints stable enough for all these things.

I've used my dogs in therapy work for more than 12years.Ripley my OES should certify with Delta next month. She will be replacing my Golden. He will be 10 this winter, and its time to retire him as much as he loves it. Therapy is hard work for the dog and the handler. As much as I love it, it can take a toll out of you emotionally and be physically hard on your dog. My crew has been visiting a busy cancer floor in a large city hospital.

Lisa if your not comfortable with children, don't put you and Frankie in that situation.I'm a pedi/neonatal nurse, kiddo's as much as you love 'um aren't the most predictable... add being sick. My personnal opinion only the most stable dogs need to be around them.

Please keep training Frankie don't give up but be honest with his physical limitations. I'm know there are alot of people on the forum that do therapy work. I'm curious as to their opinion.
I really appreciate your thoughts. Those are all things that myself and the instructor haven't thought of I'm sure. I'm mostly thinking, and I keep telling the instructor if nothing else at least it's going to be really good training for Frankie and wonderful bonding time for the both of us. I am a very very sensitive person, and I know that for me to take him to hospitals, old folks homes etc. Probably will not happen. Unless once I see him bring a smile to someones face that might change me. This group is part of a read program and I thought that would be nice to do at the local library. I figure by the time we are done with all of the training Frankie will be well on the road to recovery from his surgeries years down the road.
Again thank you for helping me think about things I never would have thought of.

Go for it Lisa, your heart and your head are in the right place. :clappurple:
You are so right about the training being good for both of you. I firmly believe we go through what we go through for a reason. There will be the right place for you and Frankie when the time comes.Ripley and I are rooting for you both.
Thanks
Troy and myself feel the same way. Things happen for a reason, and there is a reason Frankie was brought into our lives.

Thanks
Lisa and Frankie
