I agree. I think there is still one in the Twin Cities area - I hear dog friends up there complain...
Every time I drive by Pet Land I yell "puppy millers." When I see a flyer advertising Pet Land, I write on it "do not support puppy millers."
okay going stick my neck out here. Where do we expect people to get their dogs if they can't get them from commercial breeders, you also don't want them to go to back yard breeders and not many show breeders are out there anymore? Or is the idea to play into PETA and HSUS' hands and no one should have dogs?
It IS ok to be against something without having all the answers, isn't it?
not if your position presents a void that could very well be filled by something worse. Maybe its my policy bent, but not liking something shouldn't result in calling for its demise without a structure in place to replace it. It might be easier to say get rid of it without knowing what will take its place, its not reasonable or responsible.

Maybe its not exactly the same (but I love this story) One of my grad school professors used to tell a story about being an Administrator in American Samoa. They had a rat problem and abherrent poverty. They created a program to address both problems by offering a bounty for rats caught and killed by villagers. Raising rats became a booming business.

I can't stand that place for that reason. I cringe any time someone says they got their dog from there. It's like the pet store at the mall. Mr. J will tell you that I get absolutely sick going inside and seeing the dogs stay in that little cage forever.

Fine point.

Unfortunately in this chaotic universe we inhabit, one never knows what might be the consequences of anything.
Perhaps unavailability of puppy-mart dogs might lead to higher prices for reputable breeders and more supply. Right now, losses of major puppy mill outlets might just drive some of the mills out of business, and prospective OES owners will have to wait or find a reputable breeder or find another breed. The fallout of that is unknown -- just as the rise of puppy mills has had consequences.

I don't think we need to (or can) control everything in life, but we can save that one starfish.*

On one gorgeous day a man was walking along the beach. In the distance he could see a person going back and forth between the water and the beach. Back and forth this person went.

As the man approached he could see that there were hundreds of starfish stranded on the beach, and the person was a little boy. The man was both stuck by the futility of the task and touched by the sentiment.

He said to the boy, "Son, there are miles of beach covered with these starfish. You really can't make a difference." The boy looked at the man, picked up another starfish, threw it back into the water and said, "It made a difference to that one."

Thanks Ron.....I hadn't seen that in a while.
Gave me goose bumps!

When I am pulling my hair out I will know it is not all in vain!
I agree there needs to be more and better places to buy puppies. If you can get a better bred dog from a show breeder for $1,500-$1,800, why pay $1,000 to $1,200 from one who doesn't show and doesn't test? I see ads on Puppyfind in these price ranges and have to wonder what makes their puppies this price or is it simply pricing based on what the market will bear. Petland and some byb/casual breeders just don't measure up and are simply varying degrees of wrong in my opinion.

How about this ad that appeared today on Craigslist...

Holy cow! I've three 13 week OES pups. They're AKC registered with papers! 2 girls, both w/blue eyes & a boy with one brown and one blue! I'll trade any of the three for a canoe! Holy moly!! These pups have their tails docked and their dew claws removed & they're current on all shots too!

Earlier in the week, a Google search brought up this in the same city but the ad had been flagged...

Old English Sheepdog AKC
5 hours ago - I have three AKC registered Old English Sheepdogs left from a litter of 11. I will trade your pick, for an Intex inflatable ring pool.

To me, it's about how selectively dogs are bred, treatment of the breeding dogs, whether a breeder stands behind the dogs they produce... that they take back dogs buyers can no longer keep... and how carefully they select homes for the dogs they sell. Not just selling a puppy to the first person who has the cash... or canoe... or pool.
I am glad that pet land is going out of business too. I have formed a great relationship with my OES breeder. I can email him any time with updates and questions. If the price does go up for a breed maybe that is a good thing. It will give people time to think about the cost of having a dog and won't rush into getting a dog for the wrong reason. I had to wait at least a year for my puppy but it was worth it. I knew exactly what was needed for this breed and how much time I would have to spend grooming and making sure that Guinness would be a dog that would fit into my lifestyle and changes that I would need to make for her.

There will never be a "good" solution to this problem. As long as our society is so geared to instant gratification there will always be some sort of Petland type place out there. I can't help it if people that call me for puppies can't wait. I can't tell my girls when to come into season & I can't tell them that they will take this time around. One very good reason to get on a breeder's puppy list if you are REALLY interested in a pup from a reputable breeder. I can't tell you how many phone calls I get that end as soon as I tell them "no, I don't have a litter of puppies to choose from right now" & I can't tell them the exact date that I will have another litter available.

I am happy to see this store go out of business. We have (or had) one in our area too. I don't know if it is still in business or not. It cost me a lot of money one Easter weekend. Yeah, I spent my Friday (after working all day) driving 40 minutes one way (80 minutes total) to pick up a 16 week old oes puppy that a family had bought from Petland (because the 13 year old daughter begged them for it) & in the few weeks that they had it, they couldn't make it quit jumping up on their younger (18 month, 2 & 4 year old) kids! 8O 8O . I HAD to come & get the puppy NOW. They couldn't drive it to me because it was too much trouble to load all the "little ones" into the van & they needed their nap time 8O. OK. When I picked her up, no 13 year old in sight & guess what???? NO PUPPY FOOD either! The puppy JUST finished the last of it that morning.....how convenient! At least a $400,000.00 home or better (and that's pretty grand in my part of the country) & the people complained because they had just wasted $600.00 buying a puppy they decided after 4 weeks that they didn't want to keep. I thought I was going to bite holes in my tongue  Home with me she came for the night & the next day I drove 2-1/2 hours EACH way (5 hours) to meet 1/2 way with her new owners who were adopting her thru an oes rescue group. I have no problem helping out like this. I feel I owe it to the breed since I am a breeder. But in this case a retail establishment made $$$, a family got off the hook easily when they decided a 16 week old pup was just too much work, I spent time & money transporting a puppymill dog (there was paperwork stating where the dog came from) when I could have been spending time with my own dogs & family & another family had to drive several hours each way to meet me. And I'm not even counting the time the rescue coordinator put into arranging all of this! The only good thing was that the original owners had the decency to call the rescue group & not dump the poor thing at the dog pound. Do I resent helping in rescue work? No, never, I do it at the drop of a hat & I always try to help if at all possible. Do I resent people who buy from places like Petland & do I resent Petland? You better believe it.
I have never bought from a pet store, and since i've been educated on the poor animals who come from pet stores I never will. I trust the breeders on here, they all seem to care about the animal and obviously are not in it for the money. The question arises: would any of the breeders on this site ever sell to Petland or a like pet store? I bet not. Breeders probably interview a potential owner just like a rescuer does when re-homing a dog. Nothing is perfect, but at the least the breeder and rescuer attempt to find a good home for the dog. I have a visual of a huge truck pulling up to Petland and selling puppies to the manager, and then moving on to the next pet store and the next and the next... Thank you breeders for caring about your parent dogs and puppies, and a huge thank you to rescuers.
why can't they do what pet smart does......team up with a local rescue group or vet that does rescues. Our local pet smart works with a vet that runs an adoption center as well. on the weekends the vet assisstents bring over both dogs, puppies and cats that are in need of a home. people can come in and visit the animals and fill out adoption forms. They can then come back and meet that animals away from the store and the people running the adoption can meet all the family members and any pets that need to be introduced. It seems like a win win since the pets get to meet alot of people and and potential adopters, pet smart is supporting rescues and not contributing to puppy mills and they don't have to worry about caring for the animals round the clock since they go back to the rescue at the end of the day. It seems to be a farily well controlled situation and the rescue has the final say so in who gets matched with any animals.
...and adopters need to buy supplies!
Where I live, there is a guy that has moved his pet store multiple times. He started out on the Illinois side in Moline, then he moved to the mall in Davenport, and now he is in his own building in Davenport.

The place always smells. He sells baby chinchillas cooped up in rabbit cages in the same area that he keeps fish, rabbits, and of course the dogs. It is VERY hot in there, enough to make me sweat and I'm always cold.

The dogs have chronic eye and nose discharge and are all mutts, that he's trying to sell for $500. It's atrocious and depressing. I think when he gets closed at one area, he just moves his operation elsewhere. Most of the rescues in the area are trying to get the place closed down. They end up with a lot of the dogs who are sick or have aggression problems.
