Huge giant boy-how much food?

Atlas is a monster. Growing at such a fast rate- I am still feeding him 3 cups of food a day, but it doesn't seem like enough. what is too much food to feed?
Stella eats 2 1/2 cups a day at 3 years old- so I'm a little afraid to give atlas so much more. They both look great- not fat, not thin... What do other pups eat at this age/ weight?
I am estimating he is about 40-maybe...45lbs and he is 22 weeks.

I would feed him around 5 cups a day til he slows down some.... The boys always tend to eat more than the girls. Willy, at a year old, eats about 6 cups a day now. He's about 85 lbs and on the thin side. Still on puppy food.
Thanks Stacey- and Atlas is jumping with joy!
you feed him based on the weight he is expected to attain. I can't say how much food that would be without knowing what food you are feeding. I never fed Morgan 5 cups and he is over 100 pounds as an adult. How big is his sire?
I don't know, but he is SO cute!
What an adorable baby! Let your hands be your guide. Learn skinny--lean--chubby--fat and stay to the lean side of the scale. I'm sure there's a chart in your vet office somewhere showing you how a dog should feel and look from above........they should pull in beyond the ribs on the way to the hips.

Since he is growing, though, you want to feed him great food as enough.

My big male would eat himself silly if he could, but I've always kept his meals to no more than 3 1/2 to 4 cups per day for a mature male. Mainly because he'll gladly eat any people food he can get......he's our banana boy, carrot boy, etc. His snacks easily add up to another cup per day.
His Sire Chicus is 100lbs.
Is he that cutie on the top row of your Feb Blueshire photo?

What a handsome little and definately and now nice big boy!
I dont know about a big boy either.
Tiggy got four cups a day but she's 29.8 kg at 2 years old.

He is soooooo cute in the play pen, just gorgeous. :D

bah left click button is dodgey.
Super cute
Cute!!!
He is ADORABLE!
I free feed all of my dogs, so I wouldn’t know what to say about food amounts. All of my dogs seem to regulate themselves and are perfect weights.
Interestingly, Maggie had an issue when we first got her that she ate too fast and then vomited. I think she was just hungry. Once she got that there was ALWAYS food, she has never had a problem.
Atlas is so CUTE! I love how he is standing up!
I just took Lily to the vet for a check up on Friday and she weights 18lbs at almost 3 months old. I wonder if she is going to be a big girl. I'm feeding her around 3 cups per day now. She also always seems hungry! :P
i started feeding him 5 cups a day and I'm making sure he gets lots of exercise- I am also watching him to make sure it's not too much. He gobbles it down at 2 feedings- 2 1/2 cups each meal and still wants more, but he is much better. I am feeding pro plan large breed puppy... pro plan is what he was eating when I got him and he really loves it. I'm trying to keep treats at a minimum, but that boy will do ANYTHING you want him to for a puperoni. haha
Kenley is on proplan. In the states do you have different proplan large breed puppy foods ?
Here we have large breed puppy "Robust" and" athletic".

My breeder said the athletic one is for OES as it has a higher protein level.
Yes... there is regular puppy and Large breed puppy
Five cups sounds like alot to me. Bowiue is 110 pounds and at 3 years old only eats about 2 and 1/2 for the enite day...Bella, his sister, at 1 and 1/12 eats about the same and is 75 pounds...I think puppies will eat as much as you put in front of them. But I think it also depends on the brand of food. the directions on many dry kibble packages are way too much for the average dog.
Yes, Stella is 3 and 100 lbs and she eats about 2 1/4 cups a day. I'm trying Atlas on more food and he does seem less hungry all the time. I'll see how it plays out.
I'm also a free feeder and find that our dogs have self regulated. We have not have had a weight problem so I can't offer a daily amount.
Pups are different, especially growing boy puppies.
He will be a big boy though and 5 cups isn't too much at this stage. Even as an adult he may need 5 cups to maintain weight, every dog is different, metabolisms vary, growth rates vary, energy levels and activity levels vary etc....
Atlas is a muscular boy too and muscle burns more calories pound for pound than fat.
As long as he feels solid and is healthy you can watch his weight just by feeling him. :)
I think he looks fantastic, you're doing a great job with him Mark :)
As mentioned - age and activity and gender make a huge difference.
Chewie isn't huge, and he takes a lot of food to keep weight on. I have him on a really high protein and fat performance ration and he finally is gaining weight. It took a few months and 4 cups a day to get him gaining though. Now I think we can stabilize at 3 cups to keep him at 70 pounds..... He has been 71-72 for about a month - his max weight ever.

Most important is to really feel him. You should easily feel ribs and hips for sure. If he feels more padded, time to back off. A young growing dog should not be overweight. They do have spurts - so some fluctuation in condition is normal. That's why I go by feel - and use the scale to monitor what I have felt. Then adjust the food accordingly. :)
Hello. This is my first post on the OES forum so I hope I'm doing it correctly. I would love to know where Atlas came from? Is he from a breeder or a rescue group?
Thanks

ADORABLE! Fozzie has eaten 4 cups of adult food per day for as long as I can recall. We switched out of puppy food quickly due to an irritated stomach.
Atlas is just beautiful.

Oscar and Quincy both ate about 5 cups a day as pups, and both grew to be 115 lbs. Growing boys need their num-nums. :D

When our pups ate that much food, we fed them three times a day, instead of two, as we were worried about the possibility of bloat. If possible, you might want to add a third meal, until Atlas (and his tummy) gets bigger.

Welcome to the community! You're doing great.
Ziggy is now six months and weighed in @60 lbs. he used to gobble his food up in a second-really! so i started to use a cookie tray instead of a bowl, and I spread his food, 1 cup 1/2, x3 times a day. I found that he eats better with the tray method,, but he seems to always be hungry! He is on pro plan large breed puppy food as well, How long should he stay on puppy food?
what size is your cup? In weight?

Depending on the size of the Kibbles, the cup will hold differing amounts.

Differing dog foods will have differing nutrition, so you may need more or less depending on food.

Archie gets 500 grams (17.63 oz) per day of his Adult food and whatever he troughs of the cats food  he is fed twice, and does get additional biccies...

The odd bit of cheese, the crusts off my buttered toast.. ooops :D

He was 22kg at 4 months and 45kg 99lbs now at 2 &2/3 yrs, so the weight increase does slow down.

The vet said he was in fine order with no fat, but not skinny
I love that pic of Atlas. What a beautiful sheepie boy you have.
