Soft Poo

my dog is now 16weeks and is yet to have a solid poo. he eats well, is full of beans, gaining weight and exercises everyday. he is on jwb dry food, he also has a raw bone most days.

i dont know at what age dogs poo turns solid, and i have read that some never do, any ideas please. he has been wormed.

First, have his stool tested for any possible parasites/worms, etc. I assume he has seen a Vet and is receiving whatever shots, etc he needs. If he has not seen a Vet yet, be sure to bring him in. Always best to ahve a Vet check a new pup as soon as he comes home.

Next, I don't know what the food initials stand for...Is it kibble, canned, raw? How much are you feeding? Sometimes soft poop is from overeating and believe me, pups usually will eat as much as you give them! Its usually suggested that you feed at least two smaller meals a day rather than one large on.

But all in all, I say the culprit may be the raw marrow bone. My dogs, when young and even now, were not able to tolerate a raw marrow bone. Even cooked, I scoop out alot of the marrow and trim off the fat. They love the bones but I didn't love the loose poop so I trim most of the fat!

I think I would start with the stool test and stop the raw bone a while and see if the poop gets better. I have a strong feeling it might.
Enjoy the pup. Soon he will be a big goofy wet faced shadow by your side!
jwb = james wellbeloved, kibble. he now has 3 meals a day, was four until about a week ago, has around 250gms. his poo was soft from day one, he is upto date with vaccinations and worming.

i did wonder about the bones, but the stools are no worse or better since he has had them and no different over the weekend when he doesnt have one at all.

i have booked him in with the vet for a overhaul :)
Are you in the US? I assume not from the way you wrote the amount of food...I am not familiar with that food. Anyone from the UK or Canada out there that can help with this? I'm sure some will respond...

Don't get all upset abut the loose poop just yet. See what the vet says and again I would stop the bones just to see what happens. Give it a few days to a week to ten days or so to see improvement after stopping the bones. If vet checks out okay, and stopping the bones doesn't help, then look at the food...is there an ingredients in there maybe your dog has a problem with? Maybe wheat, corn, soy? Those are things that are usual culprits...Are you in Canada? Orijen is a great food to try and readily availbel in Canada...In UK, well, I'll defer to those on the forum that live there....

The Vet will start you in the right direction I'm sure. Having been there with the loose poop with my own dog, I understand completely. :( It's not fun. But if the dig is acting otherwise all normal, don't be alarmed. If vomitting starts with the loose poop, or if he starts to become very lethargic, attempts to vomit and can't, or doesn't pass a stoll for a day or so, time to worry and get him to the Vet...Otherwise, hang in there and you'll figure out why.
Keep posted on what the vet says.

saw vet yesterday, she suspects EPI, i didnt have a clue what she was talking about, phew! i do now.

he is booked in for blood tests tomorrow and then we will see whats what.

he has gained weight, but not sufficient, weighed 11.15kg (24.5lbs), he is on the skinny side but no other indicators that he could be so ill.

it might still be an allergy, fingerscrossed
:crossed: :crossed: Hope you get things all sorted out for the little guy.
EPI? I believe they can treat that with some enzymes, can't they? I think it is serious but seems you caught it very early on. I would also look into changing the food to something without wheat, corn, soy. Those are the usual culprits for allergies. And certainly I would stop the raw bones for a while. Even if you stopped giving for a day or so, the intestine could still be inflamed and takes a while before you would see good poop. Weeks.

Where do you live? If you need to change the food, and check with the vet but maybe you should be feeding some skinless boiled chicken and rice a while for the intestines to calm down, but if you are going to change the kibble, be sure to do so slowly, mixing a small amount of the new with the old a day or so, then increases the new and decreasing the current, you get the idea. Very slowly.

I would also check with the breeder to see if any of the other pups have EPI or problems such as this. All in all, I think things will work out as he is young and you didn't let it go without checking. Good for you! Hope things improve.
