Dog Equipment

I have a couple of questions regarding dog gear.
I have been looking at the "big Eddy" a life jacket for Kirby. We are thinking of taking him boating this summer. Has anyone had any experience with this lifejacket. It does get pretty good reviews.
Also, when we are camping someone had a suggestion of a "cooling vest". Has anyone tried one of these? I have been looking at Sierra Trading Post and the dog gear.
If anyone has had experience please reply.
We have used the ruff wear hiking boots on Kirby and they do help a lot. WE use them in the winter to keep ice out of is paws and pads, and in summer while hiking in grasslands and badlands to keep cacti and burrs out. They do seem to help. He even does not mind them when it is really cold. He seems to know, they feel good.

There is a life jacket thread somewhere...from a year ago or so.

Cooling jackets - I haven't used one, but have friends who do. There are several types - what are you looking at?
The ones that are a gel filled and wet wouldn't be good for an OES unless they were shaved really short. Dogs with a substantial haircoat shouldn't be attempted to be cooled by anything getting the hair wet on the outside. What it does is the outer hairs make a solid wet mat and don't allow the body heat to escape. Either totally soak them, or leave them dry.
Exception: - cooling the belly in the groin and armpits. The major arteries flow past and if you cool them, the dog will cool down.

There are cooling jackets made of the silver reflective material that has holes for ventilation. (poor description!) They made full sheets for crate and vehicle shades first. Someone got the idea to make dog jackets out of them. I never have tried them, but I see them on dogs.

Sounds like you have some fun stuff planned - where are you going?
just checked w/friend in calif., she uses the big eddy float coat on her 3.
they are always in the water and lots of pictures. :D
and her gang is ruff and tumble variety, she says they hold up great.
great info.
We do a lot of hiking maybe going back to Utah. Kirby is always with someone so he never is in danger, but my daughter thought the cooling jacket maybe helpful. I did not like the looks of it, and had doubts. However, I have been reading about the big eddie and think that might be the lifejacket with go with.
He has been in water up to his belly, but I have never really seen him actually swim.

Just trying to keep my baby safe.
Thanks again!
Does anyone ahve a link for the life vest? I'm going to doggy camp soon and there is a lake and babbling creek I just know my female will take a jump into. I don't know if she can swim, nor do I know how deep the water is there. I think I should get one...
