WONDERFUL Sheepie in NY/philly: needs a new home

over the years, ive posted once or twice that i was considering trying to find my sam a new home. we've worked through the problems and i even gave up a job/opportunities to study in europe largely because of him, and hes been with me for a few years but this time, i actually have to find sam a new home.

this is sam:

sam is a 7 year old sheepie. i got him as a rescue from an elderly couple when he was three. he had run away as a pup, ended up in a shelter, and had one other home with a family before they got him so had pretty severe anxiety issues. hes gotten so much better, but still, hes kind of an emotional & sensitive dog with some minor anxiety- but only because he REALLY aims to please.

he doesn't do well with moving around a lot or any form of instability- he cried constantly the first month we moved here, doesnt do well with being alone all day.
i was a student for years, and living in my own house in philadelphia with a big yard so i could just let him out repeatedly. ive since graduated and gotten a full time job in NYC. i've been working to help sam adjust but its just become too obvious that its not good for either one of us. he was used to my flexible schedule and living with the retirees, and he doesn't want to poop on a short walk, so if you're trying to get out the door for work, and you're just going around the block, he may not go, and then he may go in the house when he really needs to... or if you're feeling bad about his separation anxiety & you're bringing him to the office- he may just go around a meeting table as you're having a meeting with your boss (yes. really. this past monday) or when youre in the hallway to look at a new apartment (yes. today.)

the main issue is that as a recently graduated student taking an entry level position, i just cant afford him in NY financially (a dog walker, high vet bills, grooming, unable to work overtime as i have to go home to take care of him, etc.) or time wise (as hes gotten himself banned from the office...ha.) thus, ideally, id like someone that is very financially capable of providing for him- he needs bi-yearly teeth cleanings (he just has bad teeth) & really should have a dog walker if you're working full-time out of the house. and ideally, he'd be the only dog or with only calmer dogs- we once lived with a hyper dog and he was miserable and that led to the previous behavioral problems. i'd like new home to one that has had a sheepie or similar dog before. i'd need to make sure new home is a completely right fit for him- hes a special guy and he deserves the best.

he actually is a WONDERFUL dog- incredibly loving, loyal, exemplary with cats/rabbits/other dogs, very calm demeanor but cheerful and excitable, makes eye contact & is very friendly and engaged, eager to please & listen, sits at every corner on walks, trains easily... it breaks my heart because i really dont think i could have asked for or even dreamed up a better dog, and i recognize its really me, and the period in my life, and recognizing the limitations set by circumstance and sam himself not fit for those circumstances & its making us both rather stressed and unhappy....

this is breaking my heart but im really hoping there is a better home for sam out there. please keep us in mind! and send an email if you or someone else is interested.

I know this is a hard time for you....
I wish the best for you and Sam.
I am sure you can find some help here,
Good Luck
I'm so sorry that you have to go through this decision. I can't imagine what you are going through. I hope that your Sam get adopted into the best possible home. Have you contacted rescue yet?
i havn't contacted rescue. id really like him to only have to move once, i'd like to place him myself and its not like he needs to go to a foster home as im fine with keeping him until i find the right place for him.

if anyone has ideas of other sheepdog-specific places i should post or contact, please let me know!
thanks
The advantage to contacting a rescue group is that they usually have people who are exclusively looking for an OES, are very familiar with the breed, and evaluate what kind of OES is suitable for any potential homes. I'm sure you could work something out keeping him until a suitable home comes along, but it doesn't hurt to reach out to them and open those lines of communication. Especially if you're really feeling that you're not giving him the attention he deserves...it may help speed things along to get him into an ideal situation.
The basset rescue I work with very often has the current home foster their own dog until the right home is found. It is a win:win situation. :D
I remember Sam! Such a sweetie. Sounds like you've done such great things for him. Congrats on your new job. I hope you find a great home for Sam. I agree that contacting a rescue does not mean he has to make an interim move. Best wishes!
the rescue may also have a list of people that are looking for an OES. I had contacted the rescue to ask questions and was lucky enough that Bella had just been evaluated a few days before and Madeline thought that she would be a great match for me. The rescue (Madeline) went and picked her up and I met Madeline and Bella and then straight home so she could check out her new digs. I remember another posting of someone looking for an OES for her dad since his had recently passed. She was having a hard time finding one and really seemed interested in finding one from a rescue. You will definitely have more luck finding someone commited to the breed going the rescue route since most people have to be "vetted" by the rescue.
still havn't found anyone for sam. please keep us in your thoughts!
thank you!
