Is His Coat Changing-and other Grooming Questions.

My puppy Hank is an OES/Border Collie mix from the Humane Society, and I have a few questions about grooming him.

I keep reading about the coat change, but what exactly is that?

His hair is starting to change color. He's got a strip of "grow out" about an inch long o either side of his part along his back of light grey hair, and his legs and rear are changing to grey also, but in a different way. They are more salt-n-peppery and tend to mat and feel coarse unless I brush them everyday. ( So far, he's not a fan of the leg and butt brushing. )

Also, I've been having to trim between his toes so stuff can't get stuck in there... (I missed a week and it seems he has an extra pad of gum and mud! -sorry Hank!)
What is the best remedy for this, I can't get him to hold still enough to trim it out, should I try dish soap on that foot?

Also his hair from his nose up to the spot between his eyes seem to be a different, coarser hair. Is that normal?

Any other grooming tips would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thanks

-Molly

Molly!!! Hank is a real cutie!!!!!!

Sorry I don't have great suggestions about coat..my OES, Heart is 2.5 years old and is still all puppy coat...

(((breeder informed me that her puppy coat IS her adult coat!!!))))

welcome to the forum!!! we need to see more Hank pictures!!!! :D :D :D
That's about the beginning of a coat change for the OES part of him. Basically all that means is that his puppy coat starts slowly coming out and it's replaced adult coat, which is generally hardier and coarser. With some coming and out and some growing in, you get mats-- and lots of them. If he has other breeds in him, it could be making the coat change more or less challenging. It sounds like you're doing the right thing with regular grooming as you are. Make sure that you're getting all the way to the skin by doing a good line grooming once a week (more or less depending on how you see it going). Hank is really cute. Are they sure about the border collie? He almost looks like he has some coarser, wiry hair on his head, more like a terrier.
We're not really sure about anything... the humane society was just guessing based on his coloring I think. He could be any mix.
They hair on top of his head is soft (its a bit wet in the picture because I was trying to slick it back so you could see his face), but his nose hair is wiry.

So far grooming is difficult, I can't imagine how you all get your dogs to just lay there on the table to be groomed. I have to plan a sneak attack, and do little bits at a time before he goes bonkers!

Don't count on the humane society to tell you what you have....They had the tag on my beardie, Millie, as a Sheepdog...and my sheepdog as a beardie....

(with my beardie, a groomer told me, "THAT'S NOT A SHEEPDOG,,,,!!IT'S A BEARDIE!!""

I was volunteering at the humane society a couple of years later, and they knew that I was looking for another beardie. They called me one afternoon and said a beardie was just owner surrendered..I went down to look and lo and behold...It was Pearl, My Sheepdog.....

I think Hank looks part beardie...here is a picture of my Cozmo.... * he is shaved down, but when he is full coated, his face and markings are just like Hank's (sorry I don't have a better picture, but he is VERY camera shy!!!!)
