OMG Hudson just ate an entire chicken breast in one gulp

It was lightning quick. The bag with a two piece dinner in it was on the counter. He grabbed it, and it fell. The container fell open. Rudy grabbed the leg and Hudson (who was under the table) grabbed the breast. I got the leg from Rudy's mouth and yelled for Gordon to get Hudson.

We were both on him in less than five seconds. He never chewed. He swallowed it, whole, bones and all, just like a snake.

(And today was already the worst day of my life BEFORE this happened.)

Gone.

The emergency vet says it'll do more damage if we try to induce vomiting. He said to give him food right now to coat the bones, and watch him for the next few days. Hopefully it will pass. I can't imagine how it could. That's so big. Oh God. I'm so worried.

Can you guys think of anything else to do in the meantime? I can't believe this happened. It was an instant, and they both went at once and I just grabbed the closest first. I feel like I just chose one over the other.

And of course there's a weekend coming. When it goes critical our vet will be closed.

Well, here's the good news ... if he never chewed it, it's unlikely that he splintered any bones which cause sharp edges which is (I believe!) what all of the fuss is really about. Not sure why the vet wants you to cover the bones with food...

Good luck! I've got my fingers crossed for Hudson. :crossed:
I gave Frank a bunch of bread slices once when he stole a whole chicken carcass off of the stove to kind of pad everything going down. Everything was fine...
Wendel ate the remains of a chicken thigh and leg. He had some really nasty gas, but everything was fine.
My peppa ate a whole roast chook sitting on the counter cooling. She was OK so just watch him that he is pooping OK and not gagging (Vomitting) and hopefully in a couple of days it shall pass with no problems.

Any signs of lethargy, blood on poo, vomitting, just generally not himself then off to the vets.
was it cooked or raw? Morgan eats one every night raw - nothing to worry about. If it was cooked - like Ron said.
Oh Man, we will keep our paws crossed!

PS: Why was it already the worst day of your life?!
I don't have any advice, but don't beat yourself up or think that you 'chose' one over the other. It was an accident, something that happened super quick and you did the best you could. I'm sure everything will pass through just fine.
I agree without the chewing, the potential for splintering is real low. Plus the breast bones are pretty soft, the major bone hasn't had a chance to dry out. Also remember dog stomach acid is far stronger than ours.....so good chance all will be rendered down to poopable consistency soon. Yes, maybe be some gas and loose deposits, but other than some watching the bugger, I believe you dodged a problem....other than missing a meal. :crossed: :crossed:
Brick ate almost a whole chicken once.

We got one of those roasted chickens from the grocery store one night, ate what we wanted, and put the rest in fridge.

When I got home the next day, Bricky was licking and chewing on this black bucket. I was like, what the heck?
So I asked my ex, "what is this black bucket thing Brick is licking & chewing?"
Her eyes got huge and a kinda look of panic came over her face. She asked me where the chicken was. I said "what chicken"?
She then told me she put the remnants of the chicken on the floor for Brick. She said she thought he would just lick it. <this where a facepalm emoticon would go> I'm not kidding you.

Well, he ate the WHOLE thing. There was meat on the carcass still left, probably a leg and a wing, and of course all the bones. He ate EVERYTHING!! And he was working on the bottom of the container that it came in.

Never fazed him. Didn't see any change in his activity level, his appetite, his pooping or peeing. No changes whatsoever.

But I've always said that Brick has an iron gut. I've always told my ex that you could probably feed him gasoline and lugnuts and it probably wouldn't bother him.
tracie,
have had my sheepies lil brother lab get dried ones thru fence that were left from cats being fed. scared me to death, cause he chewed em, but we didn't have any problems. i was seriously scared of sharp edges and rudy shouldn't have any. serenity now. ;-)
Mark, this would work as well: :headbang: :headbang:
It sounds like, from other folks comments, that all will be well. But, if it eases your mind any, you might look up 24 hour emergency vets in your area, so you have a place to call if anything happens on the weekend.
How's everything? :plead:
He still seems to be okay. The chickenfarts have now passed, and although he hasn't pooped yet today, he's been just fine since it happened.

Anyone know how long it is until I can safely say it's all passed? This originally happened Thursday night around eight o'clock.
I hate to say it, but once Jake got an entire carcass from the trash and we never saw any evidence of it leaving his system!

I guess that's good and bad -- you're never quite sure the issue has passed, but on the other hand it means it caused no problems at all!
