Pain in my butt

Soooooooo,

did I get your attention?

Anyone ever have sciatica? This is a first for me and I really have to say I DON'T LIKE IT!!!
Getting ready for work in the morning is a real "PAIN". I can't find a comfortable spot to put my leg that doesn't hurt. This morning I was in tears, both from frustration and pain. After a painful shower, I got dressed very painfully, put on my shoes and could NOT tie my shoes. I tried every contortion known to man and finally had to ask DH to tie the darn shoes.

I haven't had any injury, did not do anything special to bring this on. Tomorrow will be a week. How long does this take to go away????

I feel for you very painfull and your right a darn pain in the butt.

Hopefully will pass soon, are you on anything for it?
That would be my question to answer - 20 yrs of orthopedic nursing....

And a husband with back surgery. :(

OK - 1st - what are you trying for relief?
Usual 1st course is high dose ibuprofen - 600-800 mg 4 times a day. You are small - so 600 would be better. Take w/ food and/or pepcid/zantac type meds if needed.

Heat and ice - alternating.

Laying in contour position - if on your back, several pillows under the knees, on your side a long pillow between the legs.

Todd had sciatica before the surgery - he got to the point he couldn't sit, stand, walk, lay down, sleep. legs in the calf to foot were numb.
Had 2 injections (pain clinic)- 1st one worked, 2nd one didn't. The surgery worked and was about 10 yrs ago.

He just had a flareup - bad one - several months ago.
He tried the ibuprofen with little relief. Back to no sleep, constant pain sciatica - so he went to the DR (he hates going to the DR). He was put on decadron (steroid), ultram (non narcotic pain med) and Valium. It did the trick - stopped the spasming and took down the swelling. Sometimes just breaking the cycle is the key. Good luck!
I take Ibuprofen,3 tabs every 3hrs while awake. I have muscle relaxers, those spasms will kill, and I take that 3x a day. That works for the day...its when I first get up that I have the most problems. Have to remember...get out of bed and before I even hit the coffee, take ibuprofen.

Just want it to STOP!!!!!!!
PT for some exercises?
Todd swore the decadron (dexamethasone) was the secret ingredient to his getting better, as he had been on the ibuprofen and a different muscle relaxant for weeks with some relief, but not enough.

I hope you feel better soon. The pain is a pain. :(
Welcome to our world........not one you want to stay in long. Dawn is giving you the same advice you'll get from the md's. They start slow with pain meds and muscle relaxants, changes in how you sleep, move, stand, etc. Then the pt. Hubby has had a bad back for nearly our entire married life--40+ years now. PT kept him off the operating table until about 2 years ago. Surgery helped for about 18 months. Now he's managing with generic Tylenol since Ibu isn't kind to the liver for long term use. You can bet he doesn't miss a dose!

Your new thoughts will be "how can I stregthen my abs and back" and move properly.

I hope your episode goes away quickly and thru pt you'll be years away from another flare up.
I suffer from this every year, always in the winter, for me it is caused by my week off between Christmas and New Years, I tend to be very sedentary for the week, knitting a lot. In the past I have rested it and it took for ever to get better. I recently learned that it is better to move... get back to your life, resting it, icing, heating will not make it heal any faster, it is moving that will get you back to normal faster... albeit, it is painful, really painful. I have a touch of it along with a back injury right now and believe me I'm in the same kind of pain.
PT if the problem is bulging disc. Tightening the muscles keeps the bulge "under control." Stenosis that's another matter. Steriods can be a wonder for short time use to get the inflammation down. When DH had the surgery for the stenosis, not the bulging disc (that's another matter) removing stenosis pain uncovered rather inflammed hip arthritis. A course of steriods allowed him to walk (sorta) out of the hospital. He still walks like an old man......but he walks!
