Spring

I noticed today that the trees are starting to get buds on them :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

The birds are starting to sing more and I even heard a robin chirp earlier. :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

I think spring is finally around the corner.

Not around our corner! We just had a storm that dropped 19 inches of snow...expecting another mid week...This is the most snow we have had since 1947 - I wasnt around then - but great we made a record. I just don't want any moe snow!

Official day of Spring beginning is March 21st I think...only 21 days... :clappurple:
Yay!!

Ashley are you out east?

Lisa
That corner comes in April here   If we're lucky!

Right now we are feeling lucky that we have snow on the ground (as opposed to last week's slush) for the start of the World Champ. dogsled races, and the Iditarod. We drove downtown today, having forgotten that the race(world Champ.) started this weekend, and so had to stop for the dogs to cross the road. Of course no camera :( Ill try to make sure to get pics of the Iditarod start.
No trees budding here yet. :( But I did see a robin last week. :D And my spring flowers are starting to push up thru the ground where they are planted near the house. :D But there's still LOTS of snow on the ground :?
i did hear birds singing the past couple mornings and there is a 51 degree day forecast next week, but some more snow after that in pa. 8O
This is the second coldest Winter on record for Florida. We've been running 20 degrees below normal all Winter. I feel sorry for the tourist who've spent their money to come here for beaches and warmth. However, in the 70's today and tomorrow before another cool down. When we moved here 7 years ago March 4th it was 85F and stayed like that until summer when the temps rose higher. That is my kind of Florida...I hope it hurries back soon. :D
Definitely no spring here yet. It's 6 degrees now at almost 7am and yet to have any days above freezing......
We have been getting into the 20's though for highs!!
March is typically our snowiest month, then melts in April. Usually have green grass by May, and mow for the 1st time. :D
I was reading this thread while on the phone with a friend in MI yesterday and when I mentioned what I was reading and that one of the posters is in Michigan my friend laughed. A lot. Apparently signs of spring have not sprung in all of MI

We've had a milder than normal winter, I think, but still tedious. March can be anything. I've heard birds singing, but frankly, I presume they are demented birds and need counselling     No robins and haven't been staring at trees yet, but I will be checking that out. Shoot, hope springs eternal I suppose.

We saw our first Robins last week here in Southern New Joisie. Still lots of "leftover" snow from the 6 and 1/2 feet we have had this winter though. The bedding plants are starting to emerge too. Poor Bailee is so confused as to where to go potty. He learned to go on top of the ice & snow back in December after all those months of going on the "dry" land. Now that he goes on the snow, we are finally starting to show signs of the big Springtime meltdown and dry land is popping up all over the place, BUT, now he seeks out snow piles to go on. Kind of funny seeing a 76 pound OES standing on top of a hugh pile of snow trying to take care of his business while ten feet away is clear land. Hopefully by June or July he will have it figured out.
we started seeing robins and geese about two weeks ago in upstate NY. My only conclusion is the heavy snows in the midatlantic and the cold in the southeast has the poor birds totally confused. And of course now we have a heavy snow cover (84" this past week in the local mountains) I suspect the bird feeders will be working overtime.
I saw a couple of robins out in the storm we had As I walked up my driveway I could see my tulip leaves sprouting up!! and my daylilies in the back are sprouting Boy are they gonna be fooled when the snow starts tonight. All the guys in the neighborhood plowed us out with the buckets on their tractors and some moved large areas of grass!! Not so here my son is a skilled John Deere kind of guy I liked it when the ground was frozen No muddy paw prints!!!
The weather report just said we would have 63 degrees by Friday--March here can go either way--What I dread about Spring is the severe thunderstorms--and they seem to be getting worse each year! I prefer the snow to the thunderstorms.
OK Dawn :!: Here are the pictures you asked for. They are pretty old & from an older camera so the resolution isn't that great. But it gives you an idea of how we built the dog run. Thank heavens I have a handy husband! :D

This is Jim putting down the landscaping plastic in the lower run (the 1st one we did).

Here is the lower run finished.

After the 1st spring, when the upper part that was still grass got too muddy, we added gravel to the upper run which is attached to the house .

Dog run from the other side of the house.

Dog run from the lower end looking back at the house.

FYI, these are pretty old pictures. House is now sided in a dark beige board & batten vinyl & looks much nicer. The dog run is attached to the house . The door that opens into the dog run from the house is my kennel that is in the walk-out part of my basement. We opted for vinyl coated chainlink fencing so the dogs could see us when we use the pool. By having the 2 sections with a gate between them I can place dogs however I want. This makes it nice when other dogs come to visit or stay over for dog shows.
I LOVE it!!!

What kind of rock is it? It looks lighter than rock we have here, except for the limestone, and it is not what I would use - chalky and pasty when wet.

And, how thick is the layer? Have you needed to add more rock?
oh - and when did you put it in?

Geez! Full of questions, aren't you?

It is crushed limestone, probably about the size of what we used to call a "boulder" in marbles when I was a kid. The layer of rock is probably about 4"-5" deep. Now remember, it gets moved around from dogs running on it, chasing each other & running after bunnies & birds that tease them on the outside of the fence (oh, and the occasional neighbohood cat too  ). So the sides & ends can get pretty deep after a bit of time. Every so often I get my exercise by moving the stone around with a garden rake. I don't remember there being a problem with a chalky residue. I think the limestone was "washed" before we got it. The date on the 1st picture is Feb. 1999. But if I remember correctly that is when we decided to add the landscaping plastic & gravel. We got Melody in January of 1997. The pool had the old winter cover on it that was held in place with waterbags. I remember her exercising in the pool area & running ACROSS 8O the covered pool (thank goodness it was frozen solid!). We were getting ready to head out to AZ to visit my Mom & I told Jim as soon as the ground thawed in the spring he'd have to build some kind of a run for her. So I imagine we built the runs in 1997 & tried to keep them in grass for 2 seasons. I remember when we got to the point that there was more pegboard down covering holes & mud than grass that we decided to add the gravel. So we probably had grass in 1997 & 1998 & then added the gravel in 1999. No, we have never added more gravel. We don't lose it due to the boards that frame the base. And of course it doesn't work down into the ground because of the landscaping plastic.

Did I answer all the questions?
Yes

You're welcome. :D Anytime!

PS: I had to add the pictures via Photobucket. Not as hard as I expected but not as easy as before either.
OOPS! Did you notice I posted this in the worng section? I meant to post it under the one where the question was asked about what to do to keep grass green now that spring was approaching  I was so excited that I figured out how to post the pictures that I picked the worng section  That's what you get for asking an old person to do something

NO I didn't, but then again, I read most everything here. And I'm getting old too......
It all seemed fairly "SPRING" oriented, so it fit in this thread rather well!
You are teasing those of us in the mid-Atlantic and north-East with all this Spring talk.... aren't ya,
I love winter & snow, but this winter has been a bear. I have gained a new best friend though....Fernando, a realitor in central Florida. This winter has been really hard with my lupus.
We also typically always have a big snow over the St. Paddy's Day week.......so something to look forward to :clappurple:
I have not seen a robin, a bud on a tree, or even a crocus peeping through all this darn snow.
Heck, we'll have those hugh dirty snow piles in parking lot's til August.
Yes, I'm getting a bit cynical....I need some warm sun :!:
Its actually been sunny all week here in Michigan, the snow is melting we still have alot but things are melting down. Just to refreeze and hurt the sheepies feet at night.
They are talking 48 degrees this weekend.
