Yup! We've used it for some yeast infections in the ears and toes...never had a reaction. I always try to give meds with some food and watch for reactions. We had no problems and believe me, my dog gets everything! Sounds like they suspect a yeast infection in the ears...

Also, look into some probiotics. They help balance the good bacteria/bad bacteria...If your dog can tolerate it, even a tablespoon of yogurt after meals will help. Mine get that after meals as a special"dessert"...
Thanks
Yes the vet suspects a yeast infection in his ears. When I saw that the meds could cause severe liver damage right away in some dogs I was concerned.

Lisa
I know reading the "possible side effects" of most medications ( human too ), they can scare the heck out of you. I would suspect the side effect of possible liver damage is for dogs who already have liver problems and if the meds are used at high doses for extended periods of time. And by extended, I mean e-x-t-e-n-d-e-d...We used it for weeks and then had do to another dose shortly after. Of course, all dogs are different. If you see any unusual behavior after starting the meds, like increased thirst, too much or too little urine output, vomitting, I would call the Vet to discuss continuing.

Are you using the drops as well? What are they?
No drops right now he freaked out while trying to get them in. The vet doesn't want us to scare him so we can never touch his ears. We are going the pill route right now. Antibiotics, ketoconazole, prednisone, and tramadol if needed for pain. Good thing Frankie takes pills ok.

I tried drops last night(triotic) after muzzling him, but he is a strong bugger. Even after just having shoulder surgery. My husband comes home from out of town tonight, we'll try again tomorrow.

Thanks

Barney just started on this a few days ago for a yeast infection and was fine up until last night when he had massive diarrhea in the middle of the night on our white carpet. But he seems fine today, so we're hoping that it was just a random event.
Ugh!!!!!

Thanks for that information. I've been mixing id in with his normal food since his surgery to make sure he doesn't have that issue. Keep me posted on how Barney's doing. Is he on it for his ears?

Ugh. It was not a one time event like I had hoped! He threw up once yesterday and then I woke up this morning to more diarrhea. I don't know for sure if it's the ketoconazole, but I have a feeling it might be.

He's on it for a general yeast infection on his body, like under his armpits.

I have a call in to the vet so I'll let you know what they say.

How's Frankie doing on it? Okay so far?
Once you get things figured out, this is a good ear cleaner...

Note that it's purple though.

This is an interesting article on yeast and diet. http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/health/yeast.htm Note that I am NOT saying not to use oral medications... this is between you and your vet. But some dog foods seem to cause problems. Panda had been on Wellness Super5Mix early last month and she developed an ear infection and started licking causing the early stages of a hot spot on her leg. The first time in years this has happened. We went back to Eagle Pack Holistic Select along with a long sleeve shirt and things are calming down again.

Have the vets mentioned anything about a change in diet to help prevent yeast problems? You can ignore the other info in the link below but it provides a list of commercial foods that are supposed to help dogs with yeast problems. Eagle Pack Holistic Select was also on this list but they no longer endorse it due to differing views after the company was sold. This and topical Malaseb products helped Panda and Darby get straightened out but the problem had been horribly severe or going on for years. http://www.nzymes.com/pc/articles.asp?a ... d=&panel=0

It can sometimes be balancing with nutrition too.
Frankie is doing ok on it so far. Stools are getting a little softer I hope that doesn't mean that we are ready to go thru the same thing. I always use Science diet id dry food for poo problems it clears it up right away pricey but it works the vet said it's about as bland as you get. I have a stain on my carpet from his last explosion nothing took it out not even my steam cleaner. I just moved the crate over the top of it.

Hope Barney is doing better.

Lisa
Uh oh, I hope the softening doesn't mean you're headed to our situation either!

Barney seems to be doing better. At least nothing objectionable came out last night while we slept, so that's a start 8) But I discontinued the keto and also have him on a rice and chicken only diet for the time being. He thinks he's died and gone to heaven.
