How do I search OFA records?

Judi had a great suggestion about having a thread that explains to people how they can search for any dog's OFA records. She gave harry's information as an example for people to follow. Thanks, Judi!

Now you can see a lot of the health records online for the different breeds. If any breeder is taking these steps to make sure that they are breeding a healthy line, for no known defects with hip dyslplasia for example, then they would want those records made public.

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) has those records. Even though my dog is fixed I had his hips and elbows tested because he does a lot of agility. You can go to the link below to look at his records to learn a little about the site:

http://www.offa.org/search.html

You can search by AKC #, name or breed.

Harry's AKC # is DN11624810

On hips for example, there are seven ratings: excellent, good, fair, borderline, mild, moderate and severe.

A reputable breeder will not breed a dog with anything less than fair hips. And they should not breed the dog before the age of two as the dog is not done growing before then.

Using Harry as an example, if you go to his records you will see his parents and some siblings listed below his test results. By clicking on their names you can see their records. So in his case his mother was age 3 when bred and her hips were rated excellent. His father was 2 1/2 years old and his hips were rated good.

And for anyone wanting to look up a Canadian dog you can now search the OVC records (The Canadian Registry for hips, elbows, etc) You can find them here.

You should also be able to find CERF information through a link on the OFA site for your dog's ancestors and all you need is the name or a registration number

Kerry, the individual dog's CERF results, if submitted to OFA, will also show up on the OFA site directly (the two organizations have a special agreement). As well you should be able to find the results of thyroid and BAER (hearing) and cardiac and elbow screening, depending both on what testing was done, as well as what was submitted to the OFA. It will all be together with the hip information, so that makes it easy.

Too, you can click on a vertical pedigree and go surfing through your dog's pedigree to see what testing has been done & submitted further back in the pedigree, or in terms of the dog's siblings, or offspring, or a grandparent's siblings or.... Lots of information. Very useful.

Amber - great news re the Canadian database!

You know, I thought that was the case, and then I saw the link and figured I was confused :D

I didn't realize Baer testing was on there as well, Marley's was done before she was registered with AKC and I just have the paperwork which came with her. Actually its been a long time since I went to the OFA site - I forgot how useful it was. Thanks.
The other testing is on the oFA site only if the owner submits it.
