Has anyone ever rented an RV?

I am trying to make our vacation plans before the tax refund runs out. We would like to
go to a place we heard about in NY. The problem is I'm not sure if I want to tent, rent a
cabin or rent an RV. I know nothing about renting an RV, and I'm not inclined to call a rental
place until I know a bit more about it in general. Obviously the tent option is the cheapest
route, but we aren't sure we want to do that this time. I'm trying to get some options to
propose to the boys before I cement the plans. Anyone have any input for me on this??

RV is excellent if you'll be moving around. If you wanna stay someplace, the RV is a small cabin that is not fun to drive/park into the town for a quick bite. On the other hand if you want to take day trips to the beaches or to different parks then your "home base" is with you.

So if the trip is the destination, the RV is great. If the destination is the trip, then go with a cabin! Lol
And the RV options vary if it is a self contained unit, or if it is a pull behind/5th wheel.

As Ron said, having the RV as one unit and driving it everywhere you go may be challenging. But, having the RV separate and parking it, using the campground as a home base is another option.

I haven't done the rental, but I know some who have (even from another country here visiting) and they loved it!
I've never even thought about renting an RV, what a cool idea....
There's a great company based here in the UK that has adapted a motorhome (I think that's what an RV is??) to take your dog with you!

We'd love to have a go but its quite a long way from here to get to collect it! Looks fun!
What a cool idea! Especially designed with dogs in mind!

By the way, the answer to your question is "Yes!" Joan and I rented RVs for a few years before deciding on which RV to buy for our "big trip."
Not to be the party pooper BUT...when we tried to rent an RV, they told us no dogs allowed...of course I was sorry I was honest and told them I have dogs. Next time I would, well, sort of leave that part out

Where in NY are you planning on coming to? I am in NY. Where are you coming from? Sometimes a good way of doing it if you are coming a long distance is to driv to where you are going and then rent an RV from within the state.. They charge for miles, etc. So you can use your own car, get into the RV and then tour around from there. Hope I make sense...
yes, we have, it was great. there should be more than one place around hershey to rent and you could tow car if you wanted. i'd leave the dog out of the conversation, never had it come up. the rental places should be able to give you locations near your destination also where you can park and hook up to water and sewer that are reasonably priced.
Re: dogs and RV rentals

My dog friend Donna bought a new RV (she had a 5th wheel toy hauler and went to a large class C) and did the paperwork to put it in the rental program. The RV was bought to be used primarily for dog shows. Afterwards they brought up the no dog rule. Donna said - it's OK, as my main use is for shows. Turns out she couldn't put HER dogs in HER RV and have it be in the rental program! So she ripped up the paperwork.....and said no way.
We rented a 28ft motor home and drove to St. Louis several yrs ago. I drove it unexperienced, like a huge van. Most people got out of the way when they saw me behind the wheel  We slept four adults and two kids comfortably. Like you, we planned several months ahead of time, got online and booked our full service campsites early so no hassels when we arrived. It was one of our best times....sofar!
Great advice everyone! Thanks.
Now that I have had some input I'm thinking we'll rent a pull along type, maybe
a popup with the slide outs. The place we are going is our vacation, we won't be
traveling around. But I don't want to be hauling if we run somewhere for dinner,
or whatever.
I'm gonna start checking out the RV places this weekend. Thanks guys!

I do have to disagree with this one piece of advice :( We had an awful experience a few years ago when we rented a van to drive to an out-of-town show. We had used this rental co. many times, and always taken our dogs, with no problems, never realizing that it was against their rules. Unfortunately, this one time, Bert was losing a lot of his puppy coat, so even after I cleaned the van, they came across some dog hair when we returned it. They charged us a $300.00 cleaning fee! 8O  because they said it now had to have some very special, super-deep allergen cleaning.

We have to rent an RV this summer, in fact, and I will be very sure that we choose a company that allows dogs!
well then you're better off asking for approval. :)
