Flea and tick protection

Hi all, we are moving to an area that we hear is popular with the fleas and ticks... any suggestions as to how we can prevent flea and tick issues with our dogs?
I hear that OES that get caught up with fleas can be a bad situation, and that they could end up shaved to get ride of them... that is not what I want, so all your suggestions are welcome!!
Thank you!

All of our girls are on Advantix, takes care of biting flies, fleas and ticks. Easy to use, and no problems so far.
We live in New Jersey and although it does get cold here in the winter, we are keeping Bailee on his flea & tick meds year round. We use Frontline and so far I have found TWO ticks on him and they were both DEAD!
I have used regular Frontline on my dogs ever since it was introduced over a decade ago. So far I have never had a flea or a tick. We live in the country. My dogs go to training classes & dog shows. So they are exposed. I apply it every other month starting in May & going thru November (4 applications). One important thing is to apply it properly for it to work. Allow at least 48 hours AFTER a bath before you apply it, so it works properly. So far I have had very good luck with it.
