coopering-part 3

Woohoo! we have achieved a tub-like shape! :excited:  :high5:

This is the "head" (actually the floor of the hot tub) being assembled

Scott drilling holes for the dowels that hold the "head" together

Hammering the doweled pieces together

Supervising...its my favorite job

Starting to put on the staves

Please excuse the guy-butts!...starting to look like a tub!

the inside...see dropped pencil for scale

At this stage, our temporary "hoops" (packing straps) are on, and we were all amazed that we could safely lean on the tub and it was solid! :D

Next class we bend and attach the hoops (I think). There's still a lot to do...benches, stairs, staining the outside, etc....but WOW...its a tub! :D

2-3 times a week, for 3-4 hours at a time. Our class meets from 6-9pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but we can also go in on the weekends to work on our projects. It has really gone together fast! :o

Our 1st class was just history and math, the 2nd was a trip to the lumberyard to buy our wood (and learn how to choose the best) The 3rd was how to use traditional hand tools, and how to sharpen them, 4th was cutting the staves, and last night, class 5, was building the head and assembling.

Of course...our tub has had 7 people working on it as a team, since the class is using ours as the learning example. Everyone else has theirs partly done (mostly just cutting), but wont finish until after ours is finished...then we help them, and so all of us will get tons of practice! Its sorta like a barn raising

Here's an example of teamwork at it's best...no amount of clamping would hold the head still while we hand-cut a bevel in the edge, so this gentleman decided that some weight in the center would do the trick! I loved the "Budda" pose

I think it was more of a "Why are you taking my picture instead of working?" look, directed at my husband!
