benedryl

My baby girl got nipped by her older borther. Post is in behavior...

She's doing well but just started "attacking" the open wound licking it incessantly and biting at it. No infection and in fact the wound looks very good. No redness, no swelling. I think its starting to scab up and is itchy. My Vet said to give her 25 mg of benedryl to help calm her down and ease the itches...Any thoughts? Never gave my dog human benedryl...Adn the side effects say "marked drowsiness"...That scared me...

Yeah, I've heard of that. And since I just got back from the vet......I heard the vet recommend putting Vaseline around a wound, not on it, around it. Some guys find that annoying.......if that doesn't work, Vick's Vapor Rub, but remember......away from the wound.

You may have to get an e-collar to keep her off the wound.
Yes, I am using a comfy cone - soft version of an E collar. I ended up giving her half of the 25 mg Benedryl. So, only about 12 and a half mg...doesn't seem to be working at all. I think the shaving around the wound is bothering her more than the nip!
I just went thru something similar with my airedale.
My got a trim around his butt that was a little too short and he got razor burn.
He tried like crazy to get back to the area but the best he could do was the back of his tail. He pulled all the fur out of the back of his tail and was chewing on one particular spot of his tail.
It got pretty nasty. Red, inflamed, sometimes bleeding.
The vet gave him a corticosteroid shot. That helped a bit but he was still going back there. I then put an e-collar on him and that helped alot but he was still able to reach the area because an airedale's snout is so long.

Finally, I gave him a benadryl capsule a few nights ago as advised by my vet. Knocked him out and, well, he stopped biting at it. My vet said to give him 2 or 3. I didn't want to give him that much. One worked just fine.
I think you'll be OK giving him/her one whole one. Just wait until the half pill wears off before giving him/her the next dose.
Benadryl will hep with the itchies!
I have used it a few times for that.....
I've used Benadryl for Ru's itchy back legs, it didn't make him drowsy unfortunately
Chloe wore a soft cone collar recently, and with her usual wet mouth and thick hair, developed a large moist dermatitis beneath her chin while hospitalized  . Keep an eye on that area for irritation. Hope all is well soon.
Most dogs do experience drowsiness and many dogs stay on it every day for itches. I used something else (main ingred) that didn't cause drowsiness. I'm all for the drowsiness though. Who doesn't like a quiet dog? ;)
I tried it on our vet's suggestion when shaving down Ollie (our 1st OES)at home. Even after 2 caps, it did nothing.
Just like people, the effect really varies.
On me, it's the opposite. Just one capsule and I better be near a bed in about 20 minutes. Then again, I'm practically narcoleptic and can sleep anywhere....
When I worked at the vet they prescribed benedryl for allergy dogs. Also if the dog ate a bee or got stung by one the benedryl took down the swelling very fast.
Barney was told (well, I was told to give him lol) to take Benadryl to help his itchies. They said to give him 4, I believe. It never helped his itchies and after the first time giving it to him it never made him drowsy either.
I occaisionally give Benadryl (its given by the weight of the dog so follow your vet's advise on dosage). The dogs will sleep when given it, but not excessively.

we also use a spray on cuts, scratches. incisions etc that keeps it from itching and assists in healing - just can't remember the name of it. (my vet doesn't like the e-collars so we never use them)
The wound is healing nicely but the shaved area has been th problem! One benedryl at night ( 25 g) - the lowest dose they suggested - has worked fine. Not sure if its the meds that make her sleepy or the fact I give it to her before bed. Just don't want her itchy and uncomfortable.

The comfy cone has been great. No irratation that I see so far. I put it on during the day when I am at work and Granpa is baby sitting!
With Quigley, he was on 50 mg 3x day for months for allergies and stress. The vet said that dosing guidelines for dogs are generally 1 mg/lb and are not to exceed 75 mg (for our 79 lb Sheepadoodle), except in EXTREME circumstances.

Quigley was his own barometer...the pinker his belly was, the more benadryl he got or the sooner he got his next dose! I recommend finding out when Target or Walgreens or Walmart have 2 for 1 bottles on sale if you will be using it often. Oh, and if you have an HSA or flex-plan for your insurance, you can use it for buying the benadryl. ;)

Good luck!!
We've been using one 25 mg tab, at night before bed. It has helped with the itching from what I say is the razor burn. I dont' know why vets shave so close

Does it help her to sleep? Not sure. I give it about an hour or so before bedtime and she just conks out for the night. But my dogs ALWAYS conk out for the night at bed time

The cut itself is healing nicely. :D
I've also used benedryl with good results. I, also when Chaunce is licking, will put on one of my long sleeved T-shirts or a pair of boxer's on him....basically whatever is needed to cover the area.
We've had better success with covering the area than with a collar. At least a happier dog.
