Are you a "white" person?

Got you on that subject line I bet! No, I am talking about decorating

We are redoing my bathroom. I keep picking out all these shades of white for the tiles, floors, tub, toilet. My husband says I want everything to look like a hospital! But as I look around my house, most all the rooms painted are in shades of white/beige...I guess I don't do the colored thing. White makes me feel "clean"...like a hopsital!!! Even my clothes are basic black suits, navy suits, brown...
Even my dogs are black and white!

I am soooo boring!!!!

It really depends on the space. Currently, the home we live in is dark and it makes it look much smaller than it is. So I have selected some dusty colors to help open things up.

I can never do white anything, I tend to spill too much coffee.
I'm with you. I can't say I'm afraid of color. I love brightly colored clothes, but all of the walls in our house are white. The carpets and tiles are all light beige. I think it makes the house look larger and brighter myself. Our house has a wall of floor to ceiling windows and I just couldn't imagine the wall color to be anything else.

Lisa and Frankie
Im a color girl, myself

White (for me) is great as a clean backdrop for colorful artwork or accessories. My kitchen is mostly white, and I like the brightness of it and the way it shows off all my bright-colored pottery. I always go with white walls for my art booths also, since that way nothing interferes with the work itself.

Otherwise though, I can never give up an opportunity to play with color.

Here are some pics of my studio...since I need to feel all happy and inspired here, I pretty much let myself go nuts with color.

Black and white floor, and white cabinets (oh, and gray & white dogs ) contrast well with all the vivid colors on the walls and counters, in my opinion.

I think people should use the colors (and I include whites in that!) that make them feel good. :D Its not a question of "boring"...its what works for you. :high5:
I'm a colored person. My powder room is green, my upstairs bath is aqua. My living room and dining room are pale pink with a chocolate brown accent wall.

However, my horse is grey!
White is for people that love to clean.
i love the look of a white kitchen with that grey/white quartz countertop, but I don't think it'd work for me!

Most of the colors in our house are earth tones, so nothing crazy, but definitely like to have color around.

Actually just about to head to Lowes to get some paint samples for our kitchen
I always think of white as for someone who is indecisive. Can't decide on a color...go with white. Everything goes with white. I have only 1 room that has white in it & that is the background of the wallpaper on my main bath as well as the fixtures. Rest of the house is colored. My one friend always says I have "guts" to go with color.
A major consideration when choosing home (inside) colors, I feel, is where you live. In a hot climate, cool colors can actually make the house seem cooler, and vise-versa. One of the reasons folks up here often go with lots of color (and typically lots of wood) is because outside there is usually so much white! 8O  Outside my windows, it looks just like a black and white photograph right now

My house looks alot like that art studio :) Bright colors everywhere - well except the bedroom that is chocolate and the study which is deep red. The only white in this house is the second floor ceiling and only becasue I haven't found the right color yet, oh and carpet in my daughters room/guest room, the walls in there are a dusty rose that I striped with glaze.

we just looked at a house th at is in foreclosire and we could get a good deal on because it still needs work. WIth all the obvious - no cabinets in the kitchen, some wall missing, only a toilet in the downstairs bathroom- my comment was, "well it certainly needs color" (all the walls are white, the tile is white.....)

My closest friend though, her house is shades of white and wood. I love her house, I just couldn't live there.
I have mostly yellowy cream walls and cream tiles in the bathroom. Then I add color with accessories, cushions, curtains, bed linen, sheets etc. So if I want a change I dont have to repaint the house. :D
I dont like stark white but I love houses painted out in shades of white or cream, they look big and open and very elegant.
I like white appliances, tiles, floor because I can play colors off them. From my avatar you see purple wall behind the dogs.....it's not that purple, I couldn't paste the correct color, but it's something like that on two walls only.

We had an artist come in and give us a color consultation including selecting the paint......there's so much to know about interior light and color.....me being a landscape designer knew some already, but not everything. To this day I'm amazed the tranformations the rooms go thru with the day's light.

I sometimes think people go to white because they don't understand color.

Of course your feeling of "clean" does speak volumes to your white obsession. My mother is the same way.
Oddly enough, the "scared of color" folks seem to have more of a tendency to go with taupe/beige/ecru/tan than white  At least that has been my experience when I worked as a picture framer, and when Ive occasionally been asked to help friends with decorating. Furniture salespeople and real estate folks call these "neutrals"... but, in fact, they are fairly "pushy" colors. My favorite "neutral" is pale sage green...it goes with almost everything, and fades obligingly into the background. Gray is also a good neutral and "gets along" with other colors well. Also, best dog color, ever!
I got married during the Harvest Gold period. Which was immediately followed by the Avocado Green period, which I managed to avoid. This was followed by the something beige period, but I couldn't afford to participate in it.

So I learned the hard way to go with neutrals for the more expensive or difficult to change items in the house - wordwork, flooring, furniture to a degree. Walls are easy to paint or paper, furniture can be changed with accessories or slipcovers.

My kitchen cabinets and appliances are white, with a beige tile backsplash and floor. The walls just had the wallpaper removed and is now a light beige. The food and seasonal decorations are the focal point.

The 4 bathrooms all have white woodwork, Corian counters & showers (best idea ever) and porcelian fixtures. The wall treatments, towels and accessories make them all looks totally different.

While I love the look of stainless appliances, I hate the upkeep which is worse than the white IMO.

I can't disagree with that for people who tremble before a color chart. I agree, the "neutrals" do carry a lot of color and people can get into trouble if they don't really look carefully. What to watch eyes cross....ask someone if it's a cool gray or warm gray

Sage green is the color I love and hate. I wear it well, and when used in rooms can be delightful, but it reminds me too much of the "Harvest Gold, Avacado Green, Coppertone" era. My carpets were avacado, refrig coppertone and the sink harvest gold..........and the pots and pans a strange red/orange. It's called frequent moving. (and the bathroom porcelain was pink).

BTW, the era after the 3 colors was......."Almond." I still have one of those in the garage.
Sheepieboss, I soooo remember that avacado period and the almond period and the gold too   Maybe living through that made me so afraid of color and that's why I am such a white person!!!!

I love the look of all those colorful walls and floors. But you are all right and I do ahve a bit of obsessive compulsive behavior and clean constantly. I vacuum every other day, wash the floor twice a week, and some other crazy cleaning tactics...Keeps me happy but drive the rest of the family nuts

I'm still in the "Almond" era in my kitchen. Like it better than white. I accented with sage green.

Old house had Avacado carpet, Harvet gold appliances & (I can't believe anyone else ever had these too) PINK bathroom fixtures! After 12 years of that I decided when I built to go with neutral colors for carpeting, floors, fixtures & appliances & add my color in the window treatments, walls & furniture.
In our first house I had Coppertone appliances!!

Your studio is so cool! Looks like something that could be on apartment therapy or one of those design blogs! It's really a great space.

I tend to be a black grey and white person, with a rich color thrown in. I like deep reds, orange, brown and I guess mostly fall colors.
My house (which is still in mid-remodel) was built in the early 70s, and badly re-decorated by somebody in (I think) the mid-80s. Soooo...orange kitchen counters,...with powder blue and tan wallpaper with malard ducks on it! 8O The bathroom (which has been almost totally redone now, in teals, cobalt blue and turquoise with white fixtures) had chocolate brown fixtures and brown and metalic gold wallpaper! :twitch:

The really weird thing is...we ripped out all the awful wallpaper right away, but since we couldn't afford new countertops we have lived with the orange for a long time now...and I kind of have grown fond of it.
I'm exactly like Heather when it comes to colors. I LOVE fall colors and it's always what I choose first. I'm opposite in the fact that I am TERRIBLE at deciding on a color, so it takes forever for the walls to get painted. Let's not get into how long it took to get stuff to add into the home. I have trouble seeing things fitting into our home [and falling in love with it later] unless it's perfect already.

I love to clean (it's a sickness, I know), but I can't do white.

I am a Fall person, so I have alot of different shades of reds, greens, golds, browns in my house.

They make me happy and content.
Dudster, I share the cleaning illness  My favorite part is when I'm done ( are we ever done? ) and I sit back and look at the house all sparkly! My husband calls it the "looking stage"....I guess there are worse sicknesses!!!! At one time I even had a white carpet and white tiled floor and an OES! But I was single then and had the time to wash the floor every morning before work!!! So sick
I took some (crummy :? ) pics of the inside of my house to show...as I said, we are in mid-remodel, so these aren't really "before" or "after" pics...more like "in-the-middle-of"

the "living room" ...sorta...our house is a very "open concept" layout. No interior walls to speak of at all. The bookcases are teal green, and the fireplace mantle that I am building (the lumber for that is whats leaning in front of the fireplace in this photo) will be painted in blues, greens and probably purples. Most of our walls, all the ceilings and the floors are all wood, so I feel the need to definitely inject more color in here!

Image

The "dining room" ...same room, actually, just the other side  I love this blue we used for the doors, as well as some painted furniture.
I bought a 1974 house two years ago - it had orange and yellow walls with maroon carpenting (it turned pink after 33 years), white luan doors, and fake brass light fixtures throughout. within 48 hours after I closed I had the entire house painted dark taupe, new carpeting (lighter taupe), crown molding in entry, living room and dining room, all new doors, and light fixtures. It was not very expensive but at least brought the house to 2007. The trim on the outside will be painted this spring along with a few other small updates. I try to do at least one update a year to keep up with maintenance of hte house. To answer your question, I have white sinks in kitchen and bathrooms, stainless steel sink in bar, white washer and dryer (25 years old). Kitchen appliances are white, they came with the house or they would be stainless.
Maybe I should start another subject line but now...who remembers "shag carpet"? C'mon Sheepie boos...if you remember the avacado stage and the almond era, you MUST remember the shag carpet!!!!

My first shag carpet was a multi orangey shade...Now you all know why I stick with white!
And the special Rake for the shag carpet too
I had orange & black shag in the family room at the old house! 8O We live in a town that is HUGE on high school football & our colors are orange & black!
I love colors! The only room in my old house that was white was the kitchen. I usually stay with earth tones colors somewhat. Though my favorite color in that house was Lee's green office. When we get drywall back up in our current house I am going to have to use lighter colors that wont eat up the light. Some of the rooms in our house don't have as much sunlight in them as others.

My bedroom as a kid had orange and yellow shag. We had a cat that would puke in it all the time, which was just disastrous.
Did your grandmothers tell you guys about shag carpet and avocado appliances? I'm much too young to remember that :D
I didn't even know what a carpet rake was until one of my friends was laughing about the neighbor above her. He would rake his carpet twice a day. Why I don't know as this was a new apartment complex that had normal short carpet.
Just my two cents, according to HGTV, white is a great neutral, especially when it comes to selling your home. White/beige carpet is tough to keep clean but I think a white bathroom with bold- or pastel-colored towels, rugs & shower curtain will really pop. White tiles are easy to wash (as long as muddy-pawed Sheepies aren't traipsing in & out!) White does make a small room seem bigger and brighter. I would think that white fixtures would keep your bathroom from looking dated (like the gray & pink bathroom Ron & I had in our first apartment - sharp looking, but very 1950s!) good luck, Joan
I was reading this on my iPhone laying here in bed just before 5:00AM and without an avatar it is quite difficult to read the tiny font used by the forum for usernames.

So I was reading the last post and suddenly the poster talks about a grey and pink bathroom, and I immediately think "I had one of those!!" and then I read "Ron and I had in our first apartment" and I thought "Wow! Someone else named Ron also had a pink and grey bathroom in their first apartment??? Cool!!! I wonder who that is!?!"

Then I looked at the author. LOL

Hi Joan!!!
But maybe its not YOUR Joan, maybe its someone who has hooked up to the forum from an alternative universe. 8O
It's amazing she only has 29 posts. I feel like I've seen her post more than that, but I guess I may have been here for most of her posts. You should stop in more and make Ron post more pics ;)

That's exactly what I was thinking!
okay people....think of the last time you went into a hospital and saw all white????????!!!!!

brian thinks the same thing....but white is NOT indicitive of hospitals...just cleanliness....one ocd that im proud of

ps...i do have color in my house, but when we redo the bathroom, it will mostly be white...bringing up white subway tile on the wall...black and white hexigons on the floor....etc.....quaint!
