Adequan

Is anyone familiar with this product. The vet we saw yesterday suggested we might want to go this route.

Has anyone used it on there dogs. I read someones blog on the web somewhere yesterday where they thought it caused there dog to have a stroke.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this product.

While many I have talked with swear by adequan, I did not see any effect when we tried it with our elderly dog Jake.
I have used adequan is my horse with good success. I have not heard it being used on dogs. It was a little pricey and needs a loading dose followed by monthly injections. We kept my mare on it for 4 months until her lameness resolved. Since then I have her on a MSM supplement. Is Adequan approved for use in dogs??
I did do some reading on it on the Novartis Web site. It does say it's for dogs also.

Thanks

Yes, it is approved for dogs (though I think more commonly used in Canada, perhaps under a different trade name or...? Memory is fuzzy. Sorry. I used it for Belle at one point but it's been a while.

Actually, I think my chiro vet sold me what they use for horses (he's a horse vet too) or I forget how that worked but it was somehow quite a bit less expensive than what you get for dogs.

There's a loading dose and to save me coming in to the office all the time he gave me the schedule, the bottles and the syringes and had me do the injections myself.

It can be pretty expensive. Did I see dramatic results? Not really. But some dogs apparently do.

Not sure if it is the same for dogs but it is a iv injection for horses. They had to come out for each iv injection so the house call added to the cost of the Adequen.

Are they thinking of using is long term or just for the acute episode and then switch him to something oral????
Worked for awhile on one dog, but nothing on another. It's an injectable form of glucosamine. You'll have to learn how to give the injections yourself or go broke at the vets.
