What are hotspots and how do I know if Ollie has one?

Hi Everyone,

My 4month old pup Ollie has recently starting scratching one of his sides consistently throughout the day. He sometimes gnaws on it with his teeth too. Does this mean he has a hotspot? If so, what can I do about it? I've read that their food can sometimes be the cause. He is on Innova Large Breed Puppy. I hate to see the little guy suffering, please help!!

Thanks,

:)

Not necessarily. A hot spot will eventually look like an open sore. It's really a staph infection from chewing, healing, itching chewing, healing, itching, chewing.......a vicious circle that really needs an antibiotic to break the cycle & heal the wound.

Your boy's itching, scratching & chewing could be related to an allergy. Sort of like itching from the inside out. A vet check is in order & possibly a visit to vet who is a dermatologist/allergy specialist. They can nip it in the bud much faster than hit & miss & have you boy on to healing & feeling much more comfortable soon.
Hi there, I frequent this sight often because we want to get an OES and I do a lot of research on this site. We currently have an english bulldog who is VERY prone to allergy problems. Several years ago, he was diagnosed with a staph infection. The vet at the time (whom I no longer go to) kept loading him up on cortizone and had me buying every shampoo known to man. Wellington was treated for this infection from September to December of 2005 and lost 15 pounds off his 60 pound frame and the vet could not get it under control. It was pathetic to watch. That vet finally told me that the only thing I could do was to put him on a drug that was just approved for dogs that cost approx $250 a month (it used to be an organ recipient drug for humans--can't remember the name)
Anyway, after many tears and frustration, (my dog was basically dying and this horrible vet was just spinning his wheels) I did my own research on the internet and found a website called www.petsbestrx.com. I ended up purchasing their products (they have live help) for around $50 dollars and the problem cleared up in a matter of a few days MIRACULOUS!!!! anyone who has issues with skin in their dogs I highly recommend this. Now if Welly ever gets a start of it (like a pimple) I just squeeze a little of the gel on it and it is gone---the stuff I bought is a shampoo, a gel, and a spray to go over the gel---if you go to the website it treats all kinds of skin disorders----it will clear Ollie right up--I am sure of it---by the way, love his name, I also have a yellow lab who shares it---good luck!
