Blizzard warning this weekend...need advice

It seems as though western Maryland is getting Minnesota weather this year. I'm not complaining because I'm one of the few that love snow. I shoveled the 5" we had yesterday, instead of blowing it. I haven't felt well enough do do it for a while, and had a good time.
Now to my problem, we are under a blizzard warning for tomorrow and Sat. for 24-36+ inches and 20-30mph winds. When it snows I like to cook comfort food. Bob has been no help at all for suggestions. Does anyone have any ideas for a warm & fuzzy comfort food that the smell will make the neighbor's drool. In the past week or two I have made corned beef & cabbage, baked spagetti and chili. So they're out.
Bob will not eat green beans or turnips and has a severe allergy to scaled fish (he can eat shellfish). I have never met a soup I didn't like. Bob likes soups but thinks I over do it in the winter. When Ryan was in high school Bob was snowed in at work, and when I asked Ryan what he was hungry for he said a grilled steak, baked potato and salad. He shoveled the patio and that is what we had, so I'm open to all ideas.
I looking for suggestions. I will have to pick up any ingredients I may need tomorrow morning/afternoon. The storm is to start mid-morning.
Thanks, Kathy

Beef stew in the slow cooker.

Beef short ribs in the slow cooker (layer with onions and barbeque sauce).

Just aabout anything in the slow cooker!
Hi Kathy.

I vote for beef stew, pot roast, and/or chicken pot pie.

I make my beef stew from scratch (well, I don't slaughter the cow or grow the veggies, but you know what I mean. :) . As I'm not a big fan of potatoes in stew, mine consists of beef (floured and sauteed), beef base (not bouillon) and water, onions, corn, peas, cut carrots, grean beans, and then just salt and pepper. You could always amp up another veggie and leave out the beans.

My hubby makes the chicken pot pie from scratch, even the crust. I love being married to a Greek!!!

Whatever you make, enjoy your blizzard.....
(Better you than me) :sidestep:

Laurie and Oscar
Chili Mac. I know you just made chili, but it will warm you up and mac for comfort  You can make a big pot of it and administer as needed. It's also great Super Bowl food, if that floats your boat.
IF you're looking for smell, Nothing like Sauerkraut and Pork.

But there are so many.
my favorite would be boiled dinner, half ham, whole onions, 1/4 cabbage, whole potatoes, and add pickling spice.............
how about a mexican dip, ground beef, velveeta cheese, green chilis and tomatoes, a dash worchestershire, and a dash hot sauce.
maybe a dish like pigs in the blanket or stuffed peppers (half), as said before, anything in the slow cooker.
I do like my cabbage, and leaves a great smelllllllll !!!
We're right there with you with the blizzard warning. We just had most schools open today for the first time since last week's storm and there's still tons of snow on the ground, so this will be interesting...

I was having the same thoughts as you. Comfort foods and baking are on my list for the weekend.

I have no suggestions that haven't already been made, though, so I'll be checking back here to see what's been suggested.
Snow due here but not a blizzrd. We are making up a big batch Cincinnati Chili. Also making Taco soup (done in the crockpot). Got the recipe off this forum & it is deeeeeeelicious!
Almost forgot.......we did the beef strogonoff recipe a couple of weekends ago (in the crock pot again & recipe off this forum). It was just as good!
I'm repeating a lot here.

Beef stew

Homemade spaghetti sauce (starting with simmering pork ribs)

From scratch macaroni and cheese

Any kind of roast beef

Slow cooker pork with BBQ sauce

And my personal favourite comfort food....a roast chicken dinner with all the fixings (gravy, mushrooms, fresh carrots, green beans, mashed potatoes, made with whole milk or cream....decadent!)
Turkey - does anything smell better?
Homemade bread.
Homemade mac'n'cheese
Chicken or turkey Cattiatore
Baked potatoes, baked potato soup
Cookies
cakes
I have great success with the slow cooker this winter. The hands down winner has been pulled prk. It smells so good when left to simmer all day.
I am also a fan of a boiled dinner. We use a daisy ham instead of corned beef with white potatoes and baby carrots, yum! Now I'm hungry!
Homemade pizza
CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!!!!

Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.
I hate to rain (snow?) on your parade, but have you considered the possibility of a blizzard-caused power outage?

Generally we get powder-type snow, but when the wet, heavy stuff falls in quantity it accumulates and brings down the power lines. If you cook with gas you should be fine, but the crockpot will be useless unless you fire up your gennie. My range is electric, so when a blizzard is forecast we drag the grill inside the garage and make sure we have sufficient propane in the tank. Then all we have to do is shovel out a small space on the driveway, pull the grill out, and toss some steaks on to cook.

Absent that, stock up on pb&j! And make sure you have enough kibble for your furbaby.
Power outage, no problem. We spend 10 mos. a year doing Historical events for the park service, in a tent. I love to cook on a grill or open campfire. We have several light sources. Lanterns, oil lamps. This time of year God provides the fridig.
We usually eat too well in these events.
It adds a bit of challenge but wow everything taste great on and open wood flame..........Let it snow
Don't forget that sometimes after a large storm it gets very cold at night and that outages could last a couple of weeks...:sidestep:
It's started snowing here. It's coming, it's coming!

All good suggestions, everyone. I got supplies last night for chocolate chip cookies and pot roast, and lots of BEER! 8)
Todd just made the 25 pound turkey and dressing last week - heavenly! It was the last one from the preThanksgiving sales.

I also am a big fan of the pork roast, with pulled pork sandwiches made from leftovers. That is 2 excellent meals! :D

Baking is good too - cookies, and I just had pound cake....yum
WooHoo it's snowing here as well. I'm off to the grocery store. I have lots of wonderful suggestions for meals.
Thanks, everyone........Kathy
We stocked up on warming food, cookie and cake ingredients and drinks, brandy, dark rum, advocaat etc when we were snowed in. BIG mistake. I put on sooo much weight with the comfort food
We were originally supposed to get 3"-5" overall. They upped it to 8"-12" by noon Saturday. It's 8:30PM & we have at least 6" on the ground 8O .
Dogs are loving it. Even my old guy who is going on 12 years!. It's a heavy & wet snow. Husband is out shoveling & snowblowing now as I have to leave at 5:30AM to take my granddaughter to her National Guard weekend!!!!!! I sure hope they don't close the roads here. I'd hate having to explain to the cops that we must be out as it is the ARMY! Of course this is nothing compared to what they are getting further south . Hope all of you are faring OK down there in the Va.-DC area. :crossed:
Tonight we had hot roast beef sandwiches and poteen (sp). Bob always has it when he goes hunting in northern Ontario and I had it for the 1st time this fall in Old Quebec City.
We'll gain 10 lbs before we get dug out.
We have about 12" so far, but it's to pick up around mid-night to 2-3" an hour. The winds are also due to arrive then as well.
This is so mind-boggling to me. We usually get a fair amount of snow each winter but so far we've only had about 8" total. They're still calling for some snow here, last I heard it was total of 4-8". But here it is at 9:00 PM Friday night, and we haven't had ONE flake yet!

My kids both live in VA, son in Arlington and daughter in Centreville (about 20 mi. west of Arlington). Just talked to Spencer. He says that even though it started snowing there about 10:00 AM, they only have about 2" on the ground right now, because most of the day was pretty warm and so the snow that was falling wasn't sticking right away. He admits they'll probably get the brunt of it overnight.

Sarah is at her boyfriend's for the week-end in Haymarket, VA, which is about another 30 miles west of Centreville. Her school was cancelled today so she went to his house about 9:30 this morning, which is when it started snowing there. When I talked to her last at about 3:30 this afternoon, they already had 5" on the ground.

And it's supposed to keep snowing there until 10:00 PM TOMORROW NIGHT!! All things considered, I'd rather be HERE!!
Don't act like y'all weren't going to stock up on those things anyway with SUPER BOWL this weekend!!!!!!

I could wear a bikini here, and I still made crockpot chili and will get the hot buffalo wings ready tomorrow.

Todd's brother Scott is now out in Ohio - Greeley or something like that - east of Columbus anyway. Not sure if that is anywhere by you?
They got let out of work early because of the weather. He loves it - he had been career Air Force and lived everywhere from Alaska to Hawaii, but he loves the winter weather best!

Columbus is about 2 hours southwest of me. I'm sure I go near or thru where he lives when I travel to Columbus for dog shows & Cincinnati to see the son & granddaughters. I heard Columbus was getting hit early on today.

I live about 1 hour directly south of Cleveland.
Well, we woke up to over 2 feet of snow at 4:15AM today. :x Tried to snow-blow & plow with the tractor but only got about 20 feet out from the garage. Had to wake our cousin up at 4:45AM to see if he could come plow out our driveway so we could get out. His first words were "Do you need a ride to the airport?" He knows we usually take a winter vacation south! Managed to get our drive plowed out so we could get to the street & get out to get our granddaughter to her car-pooling location for her Nationlal Guard duty! Hope she gets there safe & ontime. I left the dogs out in the run before we left & the snow is up to their shoulders 8O . So much for 3"-5" of snow expected!
wow and in upstate ny 21" - FOR the entire year so far :D Nothing on the ground except a few patches and this storm is going to miss us completely (so they say)
Sssshhh Kerry! I am kind of glad we haven't been invited to the party. My dogs are tearing up the yard in fine fashion, so I guess a little snow wouldn't be bad. I see grass seed in my future, lots and lots of grass seed!
^^^^^^^
I hear we may be joining it on Wednesday
I caught the weather when I got up for work this morning - hope everyone is doing OK.

That's a lot of snow, Marilyn, and the heavy wet stuff too. Actually I was wishing for that for us. We have been getting just the dry stuff and that caused all the blowing/blizzard problems. Plus it all blew, so I had no snow for sledding! And what was there in the deep spots wouldn't pack for trails, so too hard to work just Chewie or another inexperienced dog - needed to beg all my sledding friends to come over and help!

We got in the 20's so all the stuff refroze from yesterday and the dusting this morning made for a slow drive because of ice. But, made it to work! :?

Marilyn - must be training weekend, my basset friend's daughter has hers this weekend too - she was packing last minute yesterday and driving her mom nuts...

We are in the country, between Marysville and Bellfontaine OH---16 inches and counting. Blowing and drifting. Beautiful when I look out the window. Not so much when you try to take a poor OES that has back problems out to pee :)
It is beautiful, but poor Max! :(
I hope you all get some good snow pictures too :D

Yes & her squad leader's message to her when she texted him to let him know they were finally on the way but might be a bit late was: "Not being able to drive in the snow is NO EXCUSE!" The farther north you went the less snow they had. So I am sure they didn't realize what we were going thru down here trying to get her there on time. Thank goodness for cousins with plows on the fornt of their trucks, snowblowers, snow blades on tractors, front wheel drive & Advance Track! What we won't do for our kids & granddkids

The dogs are shoulder deep when they go out. Makes for good practice of continuous jumping to get back to the house!
At least so far, we've lucked out pretty much. It didn't start snowing until close to 10PM last night and stopped by 8AM this morning. We have about 5-6" on the ground right now. Whew!
The snow ended here around 3pm. We are just south of Hagerstown
( near the Potomac ) and the sun is out. We topped out at 35" per our local news. We blew out the driveways before going to bed so that we wouldn't be trying to move 35" all at one time.
We did not lose power, although my nephew, a senior at Towson
( Balitimore County ) has not had power for almost 24 hr.
Bob is blowing a path to our wood pile ( and for Chauncey to use ). This is Chauncey's second go with deep snow, both of them this year.....and he does not like it. The forcast is for another 6-12" Tues/Wed. Do they make snorkles for dogs 8O :P
Anything less than a foot and he has a great time. He's not wild about the snow blower though.

Well for the important things, tonight's dinner is homemade 16 bean soup made with country ham. Bob is making over the top pigs in a blanket.
Nathan's hotdogs, stuffed with cheese & bacon and baked in cresant rolls
( we need an yummy emoticon )
i'll b right down, borrowing my daughters land rover, i'll help w/snow for dogs.
;-)
