Nails

Has anyone out there experienced this before?

Yesterday I picked up Frankie at daycare and they said his nails were bleeding. When I got him home I looked at them and noticed the front were fine, and probably could use a trim, but the backs were all worn down to the quick. We are figuring he's either over compensating for his shoulders hurting and really using his back legs. Or I have also noticed sometimes he doesn't really pick his back feet up because of his bad hips.

He plays so hard at daycare and they have concrete floors that they were ground down. Is there anything I can put on them to protect them. I wanted to see if anyone out there had an idea before I decided to take him to the vet for there advise. We have an appointment next week with an acupunturist which I can also ask her for some suggestions.

Thanks
Lisa

I don't know if it this would help, but I have seen rubber caps that people put on their dogs and cats nails. It's supposed to aid in not scuffing up floors. They have them at petedge.

I would think that the rubber may act as a slight buffer. Just an idea.
I was thinking about those. I figured he would pull them off and eat them.

Thanks for the idea

As I understand it, you put them on using a nail glue. I know people who use them for their cats and it takes awhile to get them off
Ah...

Well thats cool. I'll have to look into them.

i was thinkin the booties if the nails didn't work out.
It sounds like he just wore them down too far. The back ones on most dogs wear more than the front.
I have had several dogs over the years that I never have needed to trim the rear nails. One (my chocolate lab Macy) wore all hers down and I never trimmed any nails until she was 12 - then she slowed down some! And they were short - we showed in obedience, she was a therapy dog - so she needed them short.

Then there are the breeds like bassets and min pins who always need them all trimmed. Due to foot and nail structure, they don't get worn down by activity.

With my active dogs I know who tends to wear them down. I also keep planned future activities in mind and trim (or not trim) accordingly.

You certainly could try the caps, or booties as mentioned. Other than that and keeping him off abrasive/hard surfaces, you don't have much choice. :(

I also have concern about the daycare having the dogs in a play area made of concrete. That is brutal on joints and body parts, besides the nail wear. Our daycare facility has a padded rubber floor in the gym area, with a non-padded rubber floor in the rest of the building.
Maybe I'm luckier than the norm....I think I'll start a poll about this.
