Barney has an appointment with an allergist

We're finally taking Barney in to see an allergy specialist in about a week. What finally did it was we were looking through old pictures and there were pictures of Barney looking so happy and unstressed and with lots of hair (that he hadn't chewed off and wasn't brown from him licking it constantly). It made us sad to see the state he's gotten into now.

I guess when you see it every day you don't notice it as much.

Anyways, does anyone have much experience with allergists? What questions should I ask? What types of tests should they run, and are there any that they will 'want' to do but really aren't necessary?

The visit will cost at least $250, so anything unnecessary would be nice to avoid if possible.

I'm just hoping they can fix him and I can have my happy dog back. He just looks so sad :(

I sure hope that the allergist will be able to help him. Poor kid. I hope he'll be able to be off the cone and go back to his relaxed, happy self.

I know what you mean, things do look normal when you see them every day. I have an old picture of Lucy where she weighed almost 85 pounds (a good weight for her was like, gulp, 45) and I couldn't believe I hadn't noticed what a gigundus piggy she'd turned into when I looked at the picture later. I could barely get my arms around her. I kept saying, "No, she's just fluffy, it's fine." LOL.

Good luck. I don't have any advice but you'll definitely be in my thoughts.
I hope you guys find an answer too!!! I've always debated going that route as well, but for obvious reasons ($$$$), ...avoided it. We never got to the point you guys are though. Please tell us what they say, ,and my fingers crossed for y'all.
Keeping fingys crossed for barney.

Sorry cant be of any advice, but good you are taking him to see what they say to try and help him with the itchys.

Here there is a specialist clinic just for those reasons I dont know what they do cause has to be referall from a vet to the clinic but I do know they have had amazing results getting allergies manageable.

Hugs barney, hopefully no more cone. Steph keep us posted as to how all goes with your sweetie. Hopefully they can give advice to settle all down and keep it undercontroll. Very hard allergies, could be a multitude of things that sets him off, airborne, food etc etc so lets hope they can find his trigger so it will be more comfortable for him.

:ghug:
I will definitely keep you all updated!
Good luck! I've never heard of an animal allergist--sounds interesting. Of course we want a full report.
They will want to know exactly what he eats, what's in it, treats and food given under the sly. Also where does he sleep, on what, what is it. What laundry soap do you use, body soaps, other cleaning products, air fresheners, etc, etc. Start a journal.

What about fleas, mites, other beasties, any other animals in the house or that he comes in contact with?? Any remodeling? Even if you don't think it is important, write it down. Let's pray the answer is found quickly.

Thanks, Susan. That's a good idea to start gathering all that information now, instead of scrambling the morning of the appt. What if he's allergic to our cats?! 8O
^^

Don't act like you don't want to get rid of them ;) At least from what I remember ...didn't one of them have potty issues? Mr. J always tells me "pray you don't die ...if so, they're gone!!!"
Just wondering...has Barney ever had his thryoid levels checked? I ask because the losing of hair, the sad expression, etc are also signs of a sluggish thryoid. Plus a sluggish thryoid can cause a lower immune system which can creat some health issues, like allergies, etc.

Hope Barney gets back to hos old self soon!
I'm really excited to hear what the allergist has to say. I know Barney's case has gotten really extreme, so we're crossing paws for some relief for him, and that the cats get to stay!
That's great news, Steph. I am glad that you are able to get in to see one. I hope that you will be able to root out the cause and get your happy, healthy boy back. Keep us posted.
