for those curious about raw diet - especially chicken

I created a video for a particular project I was doing and thought I'd share it with this group. I know some people have expressed curiousity about raw diet or already feed raw but are thinking about including more chewing. Many people feed alot of ground stuff - ground meat, bones, organs and veggies, etc, and other people incorporate different parts for dogs to chew one - ie. chicken necks, backs, turkey necks, lamb necks, lamb shoulders. I personally do both.

For poultry - I happen to mostly feed whole cornish game hens or whole chickens just because I find it works well for my own dogs and my household. Here is a video of my puppy who turned 5 months on Christmas day - having dinner. He is a strong eater and for him - giving him large items to pull and gnaw at is best while he gets the hang of it all.

Ugh... just makes me want to vomit LOL

Interesting to see though.... just the thought of all the bacteria all over the dog and house grosses me out though.
This is new to me........thanks for the info, I'll be searching for more knowledge regarding this subject......
Can't imagine trying to clean his hair around his mouth and paws when he is done with his meal :? I'll stick with my kibble for now 8O
What is interesting is that you don't get alot of mess or goo on feet or mouth. I've fed my older dog raw in almost full coat and no issues most of the time. A quick wash of the beard and you are done at that time.

Raw is definately not for everyone but for me - when I was starting - it was helpful to watch someone else's dog eat and not have problems.

And food time can be fun too!!

What other raw items do you feed? It's OK, if you do tripe, you don't need to post pictures 8O

As your pup gets more adult teeth will you include pork neck bones, etc? Any veggies in the diet?
When I was feeding Edgar raw I thought it was going to be gross and messy. So we feed him outside. But it really wasn't bad. After he was done I would baby wipe around his mouth. Then before we stopped doing it he was getting feed inside on a plate with a towel on the floor. The one thing that I miss about the raw feeding was those tiny little hard poops that desolve into nothing.
Yes, I feed all sorts of things. Despite having only the buds of his lower canines, he does a decent job on lamb necks, pork necks, lamb shoulders, parts of turkeys, goat legs, beef ribs, other beef bones with meat on them. Yes - I feed tripe.

For those who aren't intimately familiar with tripe - it is the stomach lining which is a muscle (muscle meat) and some of the contents still stuck to that lining (veggies). When not fresh, or if ground, or if from corn-fed animals - it is very stinky, however if you get really fresh, grass fed, whole pieces of tripe - it has very little smell if any. I prefer the whole pieces so I can remove the amount of fat I want and cut it to sizes I want OR let the dogs gnaw. Frozen whole pieces of tripe are wonderful to chew on. You'd think it would be very messy with the dogs but again - it is surprisingly not.

I really enjoy the fact that my dogs seem to have fairly cast-iron stomachs, love their food, have good muscle and most of the time it is fun to do. Since I've been feeding raw for 13 years - I've bumped into many other raw feeders and dogs and I just love seeing dogs that had sensative stomachs or IBD or bad breath or other issues - turn around with a change to raw diet. I wouldn't have believed some of it if I hadn't witnessed it myself.

A couple of my dogs love veggies, one doesn't but I generally don't include them in my raw diet plan - instead I focus on keeping lots of tripe around to serve that purpose. One of our dogs is an allergy dog and veggies really aggravate her.

Tonight - Pelé - as usual - went routing in the fridge as I was tidying up the kitchen and what did he pull out - a bunch of carrots and he chewed and ate one and then chewed on the greens - guess a rabbit in disguise.

Why did you stop - just curious.

Also - great that you use lard for cooking - have you read Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon???

I've fed raw and may return to it espcially with the $$ of premium dog kibble. Maybe if we start gardening again we could go back to raw.

As for veggies, Jack would gladly crawl into the vegetable or fruit bin and pull out whatever was there. He's also a big fruit eater.......but doesn't get as much as he would like and never grapes or raisins! Yeah, for him "green heaven" is a giant carrot to crunch on.

Yup, we have that book. I stopped feeding Edgar raw when we were in the process of moving. We ended up in a rental condo for a few months and he was having on and off diarrhea all over the community grounds. It was a little to much so we went back to kibble. Then from there we moved into the house that we are renovating now and I only have a little dorm fridge at the moment. There is barely room for our food much less meat for Edgar. When we get our kitchen done and I get a normal fridge then I think I may try my hand at raw feeding again. My sister-in-law only feeds raw (for some years now) and has really good success with it.
I feed london and tony raw too. In the past one of them would get explosive diareaha whenever they eat just dry food.

I'm wary about giving the whole body of chicken, turkey or whatever to the dogs because London tend to drag food all over the place and I just didnt like the idea of bacteria forming all over the house. I think this method varies depending on the dog - if they eat it in one place - then great, but for my london who likes to shake everything in sight - forget it:)

lately due to the time crunch, I tend to just buy the frozen Raw food (prepackaged puck sized meats) by Nature's Variety and let it defrost in the fridge before work and then when I get home, I place them with the Prairie dry food.

This is a bit more expensive than buying produce from butcher shops but definitely far more convenient for me. so for those who are interested in feeding their pups raw diet, I recommend this.
