More rescue stuff...our saga continues.

Well, I think I have now talked, texted, and/or emailed every rescue in North America. And we have someone who is willing to work with us, so I'm back with questions.

Does anyone here have any experience with shipping/transporting a dog across a large distance? I've been on an airline website and discovered that since this dog is in a warm climate there are upper temperature limits for travel (makes sense of course, but since I'm in Canada I haven't had much experience with upper temperature limits), and once they get to connecting areas there are, of course, lower limits for travel. Anybody here have any experience navigating through this?

We could certainly drive partway to get him, but he's 34 hours away by car, and that's not going to be fully doable as we both have jobs (I'm a teacher, so I've got no flexibility with days off). Do you think that an airline would ship him halfway here and we would be able to meet the plane somewhere in the US and take it from there? Would there be any problem with doing that as we're not US citizens?

Any thoughts/advice/suggestions greatly appreciated. You guys have been so amazingly helpful with all of our rescue questions so far!

Tracey pm me additional info. I have a friend that is a Customs Agent. I will ask him the specific questions for you. Hopefully he can answer them for you...........Kathy
I would forsee no problems with shipping the dog directly from the US to Canada. The airline checks the forecast in all destinations or stopovers the dog will be making not only when you book the flight but also when the dog is dropped off at the airport. If there is temperatures above or below their guidelines in the forecast they will not ship the dog that day. To fly a dog (I always use Northwest, which is now Delta) you need a current health certificate and vaccination records. As for customs here in Canada, all that is required is an up-to date rabies certificate. We are so lenient here in Canada that even if someone shipped a dog without a current rabies vaccine(some airlines do not check this) the vet on duty would just vaccinate the dog and charge the person who is picking the dog up the cost of the exam/vaccine.
I guess I should have added one thing. You will need a passport to enter the US. Other than that, if you do drive the dog back to Canada with you you will only need a rabies certificate. And I do know this from experience as I have crossed the border many times to either go to a show or pick a dog up at the Buffalo, NY airport.
Hi all.

We've been in touch with a rescue in FL who are willing to work with us. She suggested closer rescues, but none have been willing to go out of their area. We have put in an application for a 19 month old male. I think he and Hudson will get along wonderfully.

Nothing's gone through yet, and I'm trying not to get too excited.

I had no luck with trying to arrange things online/by phone through any of the US airlines, but I found a pet relocation company. They have been doing this for over thirty years, and help arrange transport all over the world. They haven't quoted any costs yet (and I'm sure it'll be a fortune) but they say they make these arrangements all the time, and they're happy to take care of things when/if the time comes.

We'll see if we can get him here in as direct a route as possible. If getting him all the way to Winnipeg requires multiple plane changes, we may have him flown to Minneapolis (or somewhere within a day's drive of us) and meet him there. I want to make it as low stress as possible. We would have driven to get him, but it's 36 hours each way (approx) and there's no way I can take that kind of time off during the school year. I'm more than willing to pay someone to make the best possible arrangements for him.

So, fingers and paws are crossed here. There are still lots of hurdles to get over. I'll keep you updated.
Good luck!!!! :crossed:
We had our dog flown in from South Dakota to Winnipeg with no problems. Picked him up at the airport and away we went. Glad you found a dog and hope all works out for you.

Cheers
Have you seen this sweetie?

Oh what a sweetie Annabelle is! :hearts:

Nice to see you on the forum Nicole...how's Bosley and Dixie?
Annabelle has a gorgeous grin. :D
ahhh Annabelle is so pretty! Hope all works out for you.
Received our OESOCC club newsletter yesterday and there was a beautiful female (Dolly) that they have brought into rescue from Montreal. If you are interested you have to talk to Margaret Trenholm (Rescue Chairman). Good Luck!
I talked to the air transport service today and although it's going to cost a gazillion dollars, they can make it happen...SAFELY.

In fact, Rudy's flight would be under three hours, and be nonstop.

We can't fly him to Canada (Air Canada won't take him, and we'd rather he not have to do any plane switches), but we can get him to Minneapolis, which is about an eight to nine hour drive. My hubby is going to take some vacation days and his parents (retired) are planning to join him so he can be picked up there, and ride back with them.

It's not officially official, but it's pretty darn close!

We have some paperwork to do, and I won't celebrate until all the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed, but we're cautiously deliriously happy.

I just got off the phone with the lady from the rescue. There's no way I'll get any sleep tonight. Or, I suspect, until this is all resolved.

His name is Rudy, and I scoured the maps of Manitoba to find a MB place name. (Our naming "scheme" is to use a Manitoba place name for a first name, and a famous scientist for the middle...)

So, I found this small, pretty much uninhabited (except for caribou?) area of trees way up North called Ruddock. So, he will officially be Ruddock Einstein - Rudy for short. He was named by the woman who rescued him, and we want to honour that.

So, I'm not officially announcing anything, but I just wanted to let you know that we're officially very close.
all paws crossed for you! hope all works out. keep us posted
Good luck!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. Please let us know as soon as it's a go! Great name too.
I am such a softee (is it okay to call myself a complete suck on this site, or is that word considered bad ettiquette?)

I just got an email from the Florida OES rescue lady (Candy). She was letting me know she'll get back to me tomorrow with some information for Rudy's flight paperwork. She told me about another sheepie they just picked up from animal control, and I was so sad for him (they think it's a him...the matts are that bad...poor guy). I hope he knows somewhere, deep in his heart, that today is the day his life takes a turn for the better. He's with good people now.

Her last line in her email was that she was going to give Rudy a good night hug for me, and tell him it was from his Momma Tracie.

I'm such a baby. I can't stop sniffling.
sniffle, sniffle
:crossed: for you and Ruddock Einstein
ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Do you have an idea when he will travel to you?
I am trying to set it up for this coming weekend, but I don't know if that will work for all involved yet.
There is a new airline just for pets. They fly them in the coach part of the plane, not cargo. Humans are not flying. Just pets but they have airline stewards on board. Wonderful airline. They are fairly new and flying to some major cities. They might be interested in doing rescue. Wouldn't hurt to contact them. Their love for dogs is what started them in this business.
They are www.petairways.com

One of their flying hubs in NY is not far from me. They fly to Washington DC, Dener, LA, Chicago, lots of other places. Maybe they can help with transport.
