Cold Cold Cold Everywhere...

So is everyone miserable (except places in the west coast) b/c of the temps?

I love it, but we don't ever get it here, so I can handle it for a week. Tonight until Sunday we're getting a hard freeze. Wind chill will be 0 ...so for my area, that's big.

I couldn't help but giggle at a school district that is closing down b/c it's going to be unusually cold. ha! Freezing temps don't even hit until school gets out today. Then to hear there was a line outside of places like lowes since 2 a.m. to get in at 7 a.m., and the poor folks had no idea they've been out of stock of all the things they're looking for since yesterday. We will probably just crack our external hose bibs slightly, but since we're in a new home ...we're not worried about the pipes inside.

Hope everyone is staying warm.

Do you have a basement or are you on a slab or over a crawlspace? Pipes can freeze under buildings if the plumber doesn't expect freezing temps.

Either way - you're right! Just letting the water trickle from faucets (indoor and out) while temps are below freezing will likely prevent them and their pipes from freezing - but not from forming really cool ice sculptures under the outside faucets.
just woke up to frost and i live in fla 8O
I just wrote my husband to ask him about the crawlspace. Thanks for reminding me!
I love this cold weather too. Much better than heat. Yeah, winter!

Did you notice you can see the "dogs breath" also? We need our heat back!

I think we should all go visit Darcy
yup; we've got a wind chill of 19 degrees. And what does that mean? Dog Park time!!!! :? Yup; the minute it gets cold, the girls are completely spastic and they love bouncing around at the park with their spazzy dog pals! And all us dumb uprights are standing there, comparing notes on which parts of our bodies have gone numb....
Well, were having a warm snap (25F-35F) which sucks because it means ice, ice, ice! :(

Sometimes I miss living in Fairbanks (about 300 miles further North than where I am now) because winter just means COLD....not back and forth freeze/thaw.

Those of you dealing with (unaccustomed) freezing pipes: a few tips...water running, as Ron said, also open up the cupboards under your sinks in the kitchen and bath and remove all the stuff stored there so warm air can circulate. Filling the sink with hot water helps a little too. Please dont use space heaters (or at least be very cautious, if you do) as LOTS of fires get started up here that way! 8O I used to work in a place that did fire-damage repair (on artwork/framing) and was shocked at how common that was.
Excellent suggestion on the cabinets!

Also, for our do-it-yourselfers on the board who may live in climates not expecting such cold weather, if you ever do your own insulation on outside walls, don't put any insulation between the water pipes and the inside of the house. The insulation goes behind the pipes, between the pipes and the outside only.

If you put the pipes in the middle of the insulation it prevents the warmth from reaching them, making them much more suceptible to freezing. In fact many times they are more suceptible to freezing than if there is no insulation in the wall at all! 8O
Tampa FL this weekend is suppose to have low of 28 and highs in 40s...my fatherinlaw who is 84 is freezing! Snowing here in NC mountains from now until Saturday! We have been in the teens with highs in 20s since Dec. 18th...getting old. Next cold front should keep us another 10 days in single digit lows...brrrr!!!! They told me winter in Asheville was mild...coming from Charleston SC I have to say it's just down right COLD!
Heatwave here for till next monday, 36c today, high 30's all weekend and monday peaking at 41c 8O

Your freezing over there, we are baking :P
I would say you can start complaining when you have the cold plus the snow (at least 8 " on the ground & more coming overnight) plus the freezing rainy mist to deal with! Yep! Great northeast Ohio! And guess where I'm going tomorrow??? To a dog show! :D
My s-i-l is still without electricity. Fortunately she has a fireplace to hang around. the WCI is expected to be -15 tonight.

We get a bit of cold weather, but mainly deal with heat in the summer. We aren't expecting to get up to freezing until Tuesday. Some of the schools in our area were closed today. The drizzle last night left lots of icy spots. The wind made it cold today, but the biggest issue is that many kids don't have cold weather gear. I can't tell you the number of kids that come to school in lightweight jackets. :(
I think most of the UK is covered in snow. We have been snowed in the last few days, but feel very grateful that we have heat & electric. Walking Ru is near impossible, I keep thinking he's going to pull me over on the ice.
Global warming?
Freezing here in Florida - may have flurries just north of Orlando.
The sheepies are crazy - they love the cold.

There have been lots of articles in the papers here about the fact that there cant be global warming due to exeptional cold weather events.

A scientist (forget who) someone to do with climate, said its not global warming anymore its global climate change.
Well duh. :D I guess that's what we have scientists for.

Crazy sheepies here as well. I've never seen Tonks bounce quite so much, and Luna (lazy girl that she is) is actually running her chunky little butt off! They both have so much energy that I've taken them to the park every afternoon for anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half. Meanwhile, I'm freezing out there!
It felt so much warmer out this morning - and it was - only -6F !!!

Sad to say, I'm getting used to it, apparently :?
Hey, there's a chance for the S word "S-N-O-W" in Mexico City for tomorrow night!

43-45 Celcius today in our state 8O Lets hope no fires today,l the change hits tomorrow. We are vegging inside today with aircon on full blast, bring on winter :?
109.5F - 113F !!

Wowsers that's hot! I hope you get the coolness quickly.

Stay cool, drink lotsa wahta.
We still have at least a foot of the 2 foot blizzard we got just before Christmas and we added another 3" of fresh a few days ago. Another snow forecast for tomorrow. I really like snow but it has been so miserably cold with the wind chills to get out & enjoy it.
Chauncey likes the cold but 2 feet of snow was just too much, now that we're down to about a foot or so he loves it, he just doesn't want to be out more than a few mins at a time.
All hairy creatures and me the not so hairy creature are all lolling about under the air con.
Something has gone wrong though, when I ring the drinks bell no drinks waiter appears.
As Lisa said its a hot one here.
Its 10pm and still 98 farenheit outside. Aircon is working overtime and still lots of huffing and puffing from a hairy young lady.
Mim and Lisa: plz send some of your warm weather to Florida..someone stole ours. We have been 22F below normal for weeks. So plz share your heat. 8)
Australia is the place to be! Is it humid?
Still freezing here in Florida. At least the sheepies love it. They will come inside.
What cold in Florida, I thought that never happened.

We must have stolen you're warmth for down here. No its not humid here in Victoria or not usually. Today is just dry and hot, very hot.
Queensland is humid though, so you can take your pick of the type of weather you would like. :D

Its 4am and still 91 farenheit now. This is exceptional though.
Today is nice - it finally broke all the really cold weather here yesterday.

Right now it is 13F (-11C) here, so MUCH better. It is supposed to be upper 20'sF for the next week - HEATWAVE in MN!!!! :D :D

You're having a heatwave, a tropical heatwave....you really are because here in the tropics we've been getting down into the 20's.:)

Not at MY house, if that's any consolation! ....try -10F! Our forecast is calling for -20 later this week. The guy we hired to replace our roof finally started work last week, so half of our roof is covered in a tarp 8O This could get...chilly!
Oh my!!!! I hate the cold, I cant imagine taking the roof off in that kind of weather. I hope they finish it quickly.

I'd be visiting an accomodating friend with both a roof and heating. :D
I hate the cold too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are freezing!
It got to 20F and sunny - that's sweatshirt weather! :D

(40 degrees warmer than last week!)
Ran out of propane for the rolling heater i bought last week, last night. Thank doG i brought my down comforter to MEXICO with me.
I'm sitting her watching ad's on the Bahamas on the tv going hmmmmmmmmm
My friends here say it is the coldest they remember in 20 years of living here.
Dawn, this might not be cold to you ... 27 F, but for living in stone houses with no heat and openings below the beams to outside, we're COLD here!!!

brrr - open under the eves - that's COLD!
So many people had their pipes break here. Everywhere you went, someone was racing home to help their wife. ...but the weather is warming up now.
In the 30's today here & the high 30's (like 39!!!!!) the rest of the week! Dawn, that's almost teeshirt weather
We're having a heat wave too. I think it almost reached 30 degrees F yesterday, which was nice for herding. Last week it was more like low 20s and THAT was a warm up over previous weeks. The dogs love it but I find it a little hard to move quickly to where I need to be dressed in about 7 layers and tromping through snow. And the goats get so darn grumpy. Last night Sybil got into it with one of them and they ended up headbutting. She was quite put out    Belle's sheep were a lot more accomodating. They're better dressed for the weather for one thing.

Kristine
We were supposed to get 30 yesterday here too - but it only hit 20. I see where our warm weather went.....

Yes marilyn - almost t-shirt weather for sure!

We will try again today. Lot of good it does, as I work 12 hrs...oh well.
It is supposed to be a trend for several days. Even in the low 30's in ND for this weekend. I need to get the clippers out and get Chewie's underside reshaved, or he will be overheating out there with all the activity. (seriously)
I need to revamp my packing and ditch all the super thick stuff too.
Well, it is snowing in Mexico City and Veracruz tonight. The Gov't. has issued a warning to all about the 22nd "Northerner" that is coming on Friday.............

Just great. I have enjoyed having a month off from shows......... and wouldn't you know this weekend is our FIRST show of the new season, and it is outdoors......... I didn't bring my Colorado winter clothes down here with me because it was SUPPOSED to be WARM and SUNNY MEXICO! HA!!!

I just cannot get enthusiastic about this weekend..........
We're finally supose to hit 70F today and 77F and raining by Saturday. I'll be glad to turn the heat off....my poor sinuses.
WHOOO WHOOO we're above freezing ( 35F ) for the 1st time in weeks.
