Anybody have any advice (cat related)?

To all the cat owners out there - help! My Ampersand is blocked. It appears to be a chronic on-again-off-again situation. When he was 6 weeks old, he was a little stray kitten who was attacked by a Boxer. The boxer caught him up by his tail, broke it, and ended up shaking him violently. The shaking caused nerve damage of his rear legs, sphincter, and, we suspect, internal damage.

As a result, he has problems with his bowels. He gets constipated. We were able to tell before because he'd get this 'gummy' butt. Now that we have dogs, they are so diligent, that they keep him clean, it's hard to tell.

Poor guy is at the vet AGAIN today. Does anyone know where I can find information on high fiber cat food? Maybe start using some yogurt?

He's only 3 now, it seems like the bouts come on every 4 months or so.

Please, help!

not sure about cats since it is not an issue for my two, but for my horse who tends to colic I give her a probiotic which comes in a paste or powder. The other thing my vet gives her to help move things along is mineral oil. you could try slowly adding that to her kibble to see if that makes things run smoother for her. 8O
Right now, the vet has us using this relatively new transdermal gel. Twice daily, we rub 0.1cc of this gel into the inner flap of his ear. The purpose of this gel is 'to get his gut moving' like a normal animal's does.

I'm not sure how to put mineral oil in his food, since we have three other cats. He does like dairy, so I thought that plain yogurt may help him along.
The yogert should work since there is probiotics in it. Not sure on the dosage for a cat. The scoop I give my horse is about a teaspoon a day and she is 1200 lbs. Maybe you can find out how many organisms are in a spoonful ie Activia might list it.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I will give the sheepies a bit of plain yogurt daily and that really helps their movements. I hope it will work for Ampersand!
I'm not sure if this will help or not.

Our cat buzzy was thrown out a moving car and very malnourished when we got him. When we first go him he would throw up every time he ate. I tried many different things.

I have found that Royal canin extreme hairball food is high in fiber. He poops often now that he eats this food. Science diet id for felines is also very high in fiber(depending on your feelings for Science Diet)

I also had read that pumpkin can be given to cats for more fiber.

Good Luck

Could try furball remedy (the oral vaseline like gel) this would lubricate his internal tract and keep things slipping and sliding. just place on the paw or some other area for him to lick clean.
Here in Aust. there's stuff called Catalax. Its in a big toothpaste tube. I forget exactly what's in it but I think parafin and other stuff.

You can put it in their food or if they dont like to eat it you smear it on their front legs and they lick it off. Unless they are a stubborn siamese cat and then they wear it proudly round the house and get it on the duvet cover.

My vet said it was the first time he'd ever had a cat NOT lick it off.
Ampersand is at the vet again. This is the third time we have had to have him anesthetized to have a manual fecal extraction. I'm just frantic about it, too. He's the sweetest cat we have and having him at the vet last night and not with us was very noticeable and difficult.

My old vet in Michigan thinks he has "Mega Colon" which is a condition that affects humans as well. It's a genetic disease which makes the colon not function and causes blockages. My old vet recommended that we go through surgery to have his colon removed. She said that he will have diarrhea like stool for life, but so long as there is a litter pan, it won't be a big deal.

I don't want to think about him having to undergo surgery and will try to exhaust everything we can before we'd have to resort to that. I don't even know if there is a vet here who can perform this procedure.

I sure could use a hug about now...
Oh, poor you and poor kitty Ampersand

I hope the vet can give you some options besides surgery. But if it's megacolon, then the surgery might be your only option. It just doesn't get better, unfortunately. :(
:ghug: :ghug: :ghug:

How will they diagnose megacolon. Its a barium enema or colonoscopy for humans. I guess you really need to know exactly what Ampersand has so you can decide what to do.

I know what you mean its very different not having a cat around. I lost my siamese 2 1/2 years ago and had to wait 3 months to get a kitten from my breeder of choice. It was lonely even with a dog.

Good luck. :crossed:
I have a friend who had a manx that was ALWAYS blocked for the same reasons your kitty is; nerve damage in the region around where the tail would have been. Anyway, the vet had her giving her cat pumpkin with its meals; same as we would our dogs. But I believe it was a VERY small amount; like 1/4 of a teaspoon.
