Blizzard Expected

To those of you in the usual wintery locations this is no big news to you BUT for us, in lower New York State, we are expecing a blizzard over the weekend and people are running around like crazy in the grocery stores, gas stations, etc. Do they really think they will never eat again?

Of course I made sure I ahve plenty of wine, some fire logs and the doggys have food and bones to chew. Anything else can wait

well it is also the last weekend before Christmas andmuch of the nonsense would be going on anyway. But water is always a good thing to have in the case of a snow storm or other weather situation.

I have 3 1-gallon jugs of water all the time for unplanned outages. Living rural means a well. The well needs electricity to run....
When storms are predicted, we also fill the 5 gallon pails full of water. :D

Last one heading home from town gets the stock-up calls!

We used to have a well, no electricity, no water. Now we have a grinder in the basement for solid wastes and can't use any water if the electricty goes out 8O

No escaping it
We are well too. One prolonged storm caused outtage had me melting snow on the wood stove. No more wood stove so I get nervous now.

As for human waste, the new sewer system is a vacuum system, I wonder what would happen if the pumps were out for too long? Does the whole valley back up??

generator?
We pray so   Pumping poop uphill is a novel concept in an area where topography varies enough to allow gravity to do the deed, unless you live below the sewage treatment plant.
You need to live here, we had 39c (102) the other day, does dust blowing count as a blizzrd 8)

I would love to experience a white christmas for once instead of heat, dust and blowflies
Around here, septic code calls for the "mound system" - which makes a pump a neccessary evil. The mound is most always higher than the outlet point from the basement....

now we are grandfathered in with the old septic, but the minute we would do any remodeling with additions or the like, we would have to "upgrade" to a mound.
Okay...the blizzard is a go starting tonight. So they say. Up to 24 inches of snow with winds at about 50 mph. Is more a coastal storm and well, I live on the coast so I guess I will be hit big time!

We are prepared...I have extra water for the doggys...Lots of water. Lots of food for them and bones to chew on. I bought them some leg warmers so they don't get all snowballed in the legs with this amoutn of snow...I have stew to be cooked up in the slow cooker and wine for fun. That's for the humans  ..I am READY! And I am actually looking forward to it! Snow blower is prepped too...Did I forget anything?

I know, you snow people are probably laughing at me...24 inches of snow...big deal to you right! Ha ha ha...To us its HUGE!
i just had the call you always dread. my neighbors went to my house when it was -18 F last week and the pipes had frozen. Fortunately they turned off the water. But, when it thawed, they have found a minimum of 12 broken pipes 8O :(

I am now learning how to deal with plumbers, restoration, etc. from a country away.

At least, i wasn't like the woman that is gone to work and is in Belgium, no one turned the water off for her and she has 2 feet on 2 floors of water.......... ouch!!!

I asked Norm tonight if he wanted the bad news now (he was at Busan Airport in S. Korea), or when he got here. He said to wait.

Ho Ho Ho...............................

Here's our disaster prep list (we try to keep it available always...but a big weather front moving in is always a good reminder to re-stock)

Water
easy to cook on a sterno-stove food, Sterno
flashlights, alladin lamps/oil, candles
sand (for driveway traction...also for weight in the truck if its slick)
batteries
a non-electric using phone and battery-powered radio

Good luck, stay safe&warm and enjoy your christmasy weather! :D
We are expectind 12 in to 18 in I have dog foof (one larg bag 5 large dogs 8O ) We always have stuff in the freezer We do have well and septic but do have a generator, except it needs to go to the back of the house and we cannot open gates with a foot of snow and my hard headed hubby insisted on leaving it in the garage!!! We heat with pellet stoves (heat pump ugh!) we will be fine

Probably because your land is flat...I am thinking? Here we have rolling hills even though it is farmland. My ground slopes just enough that even my family room toilet (ground level, walk-out basement) is higher than the septic system. We were lucky. Ground was nice & sandy (no clay) too so we could use leech wells in stead of lines. Everytime they talk about bringing sewer down into this area, they put it on the back burner. Too may houses situated the say way that would require a lift station. Not cost effective.

SIL lives in a flatter area across town. Her family room is below ground level & they need a grinding /pump system for theirs to get it up to the septic tank.

Sounds sorta cozy to me! Just a dusting here overnight. The weather station says maybe 1"-2" total. Still puts us more into the Christmas spirit tho' :D
Well, about all you can do is enjoy the snow! Hope the roof doesn't collapse, trees don't break, but otherwise, sit back, drink cocoa and enjoy the show.
Oh heck never thought of cocoa DUH... I was out with the dogs This is a dry type snow good for skiing not snow men. I swept the deck steps I am going to make cocoa and decorate the tree!! Everyone stay safe. I for one am going no where :D
Well I am hearing Maryland and Virginia are getting hammered. Hope all of you down there are fairing okay.

The snow just started here. Its so quiet and peacful outside. Thanks for the emergency prep list and I actually have all those things. We are in a hurricane zone so I always have lots on hand. Looks like most of the storm will happen overnight so me and hubby can still go out for a bite I think! We live near the water and since this is a coastal storm, the tide is rising quickly 8O But, hey if it ices over, I can walk across the bay to my favorite restaurant!

Stay safe and warm everyone!
The barbecue will have to wait

Image
yeeeuupp! Ron, looks like you have some work ahead of you before you can BBQ that turkey for Christmas.
Yeah, Virginia got pretty hammered! It was fun, though. And we went to the store right before it started and I swear EVERYONE else in town was there too. There wasn't any bread left on the shelves. Come on, people. It's just a day or two. (But we were there too, so... although we went to pick up baking supplies)

Oh, AND our fridge died the morning of the storm so noone can come to look at it until Tuesday. So we're now using our back porch as our fridge.

oh Noooooo! Santa might be bringing you a new frig. Great timing. :(

Having used the garage for a frig many times, I understand your standup measures. Just hope a squirrel doesn't discover the cache

At a rental we had an unheated back entry that went down to the basement.
Todd had the brilliant idea of helping defrost the fridge freezer with a sharp knife......well, as you could predict, he stabbed through the wall and pierced the refrigerant. Dead frdge/freezer. :(

Thankfully it was early winter and we used the back steps for our fridge and freezer. It took creative placement and some trial and error to figure out the best spot for the veggies so they wouldn't freeze, and the coldest spots to keep the freezer stuff frozen....
Yeah, luckily the freezer half still works, but of course we actually have a garage freezer too, so backup if something happened, but no backup fridge. Such an annoyance. We better not need a new fridge from Santa. This was a pricey fridge...
If it has two halves, it must be a SubZero?

Maybe you could use the freezer(s) to freeze "blue ice" to keep the fridge cool!

When our fridge bit the bullet a couple of years ago it was in early spring. Our back porch was our filled cooler storage spot.
