Behavior during female dogs cycle

Aggie has been really calm during her cycle and I'm really loving it. Is this normal? Will it last after she finishes her cycle?
Edgar seems to be the one initiating the play tussles which is opposite of normal. Lee says maybe she doesn't feel good
and has girl cramps. That, and she needs a bottle of wine and some chocolate to feel better. LOL He knows what makes
me feel better  .

Depends on the bitch. But apart from natural aging/maturity, I wouldn't expect calm to be the new order of the day once she's out

Sybil gets kind of clingy and sweet and cuddly, which I really love. (She's due in any day now and clingy has already set in.) Her dam shows no effects what so ever. And her grand dam layed around giving all and sundry the "oh woe is my" pathetic look. Her granddam's sister, my Belle (now spayed) became Super Dog when she was in season. Never was she more focused and "on" in training. The three weeks leading up to her coming in, however, she barely knew her own name    Well, at least in her younger days.

My vet thinks some bitches do get the canine equivalent of cramps and has been known to give one of her own bitches metacam for a day or two during the worst of it if I'm not mistaken. She's also the one who warned me that no matter how pathetic they seem, do NOT give them Midol, something she apparently learned from one of her OES breeder clients, and, no, it wasn't me  It had no effect on the bitch except turning her poop some fluorescent color (I forget which one), causing the breeder in question to need tranquilizers, for herself that is

If my girls are anything to go by, the patterns seem to persists. I.e. if you have a bitch who is mopey or distracted or cuddly or whatever while in season, that's sort of what you can expect. Though it normally seems to get less obvious with age. Or at least that's been my experience with this line. Your milage may, as they say, vary.

Enjoy the peace and quiet while you can

Edgar started humping Aggie and I am so grossed out. I thought since he has no balls he wouldn't be
interested in her. I guess she must have hit the really good smelling time of her being in heat. Bleh. I
thought that neutered males were not interested in that sort of thing. How long should this super
good smelling phase last? I really hope Edgar doesn't turn into a pervert humping maniac.

Why are you letting him?

I have an intact female and non of the males (even the intact one) are allowed to show any undue interest in her at any time.

Why? Grossed out, I mean? Do they tie or is it just air humping?

My neutered male humps one of his sisters all the time. She just stands there. The first time he tried that with the other one she explained in no uncertain terms that she'd rip his face off if he as much as thought about it again, so he decided to pass and has never tried it again  . She and her sister take turns humping each other though. None of them have to smell good. They just do it. They're dogs.

Anyway, the smelling good part. Usually, and esp with a brainless male (young, never bred anything or neutered generally applies here) bitches smell the most wonderful AFTER prime time and as they're starting to come out of season. How long has she been in?

If you don't like it - and I do sympathize, actually; it annoys me - you tell him to get off and every time he even looks like he's even thinking about it you tell him to knock it off and just keep after him. He'll get the picture. Though it would be MUCH more effective if Aggie would tell him off, but apparently she's enjoying it. Well, what the hey, safe sex, could be worse

I house sat for some friends many years ago and their neutered chow mix tied with one of their intact setter bitches and I almost had a heart attack

If it's all just for show, it's just annoying and you just tell him in no uncertain terms to knock it off. Your house, your rules.

My little girl tries to do that to my leg sometimes when I get home from work. I have to peel her off my leg and wait for her to calm down. She was spayed a month ago and it has not changed a bit. My little old man Dexter however has never even tried once. What's Bella thing :? :?

Well, how hard is THAT given that she doesn't really like any of them :sidestep:

She only dislikes Beowulf - she sleeps next to Morgan and Cedric wench!!

So funny - I have been letting the three healthy ones run together a little more this week what with Morgan sick and keeping me busy. Marley and Beowulf will take turns being next to me - and anyone who doubts that dogs read VERY subtle body language changes should watch them. You woud swear they are communicating through esp, but simultaneouslly they will change positions. Actually pretty neat to watch.

You're right!! Its so subtle that I cant see it sometimes even when I'm looking for it.

There's a boxer called Caera who comes to obedience with us. She and Tiggy have a thing going where they stir each other up to be naughty together.

I have tried standing between them when they're both in a sit and watching intently, but nope I cant pick the cue. They seem to just sit there being perfect little angels, sometimes for quite a while. And then for no reason apparent to us poor, dumb humans they both leap up at the same time and try to wrestle or chase. 8O
Mim, that's hilarious! I can see it in my mind.

Even though our breed is not a strong eyed breed (for the most part) watch their eyes...

Last night as I was getting ready for agility class, dogs circling whomever I had on the grooming table like little sharks, foster troll trying to bark and stir things up, I had my hands full and rubberbands in my mouth so the only thing I had left was my eyes and the pressure of leaning forward (or not) I caught foster troll's eyes with a glare and managed to move her 20 feet backwards, yap kept shut for a change, without ever saying a word and barely moving a muscle. And I have no clue what I'm doing. Imagine what volumes and with what finesse dogs, who truly understand the fine art of reading body language, can speak.

Of course, then I tried it with Belle, who was also being a bit of a pest, and she just stood there, big relaxed grin on her face, and refused to budge. She looked me straight in the eye and basically told me she wasn't moving a muscle no matter what I did and there we stood until I couldn't stand it anymore and broke out laughing.

With dangles or without the tempting smell gets to them in the end, they loose there brain cells during that time

Usually around 4 days at that critical time even though they have no dangles does not stop the urge.

If she is calm and quiet during her heat she will probably still remain that way, it is amazing you can have a horror beforehand and after that heat with some seems to mellow them a lot.

Brie is mopey while in, a slug, very clingy and after the heat we still have a lot of nonsence till after her imaginary babies are born. 8)

My peppa was the opposite, she went looking for it and had to be watched 24/7 outside while in as if she could at that crucial time she would of found a way out to galavant around with any male in the district. She would be so hyped up during her heat, not eat at that crucial time and just a darn pain in the butt for 3 weeks.

There all different.

With edgar if he becomes a real pain in the butt and driving aggie insane with trying to mount her, then just seperate for 4 days or so if she is at that crucial time, less stressfull for edgar then, they do stress at girls in heat at that crucial time so maybe give him a break away from Miss tempatation at that time for his own insanity to remain intact
I think that Aggie stopped bleeding (that I noticed) a few days ago. Now she is just becoming a HO (though Lee objects to that :) ). She keeps smelling Edgar's privates and shoving her butt in his face. Edgar had made, um, connection with her and Lee had to drag him off. He got put in the crate until he, um, calmed down  . I'm going to see if I can keep him upstairs and out of Aggie's way downstairs. I don't know why I got so grossed out as it is only instinctual on their part. Aggie is pure desperate for some puppies. She's is most definitely on the prowl. I keep telling Lee that Edgar is the innocent party here :). Besides, Edgar being Edgar, he probably has no clue what happened.

Okay, another question. Sorry. :) Aggie seems to be shedding an amazing amount of hair. Like I vacuum and less than a week later it looks like an animal died in my house. Instead of snow drifts I have fur drifts. Do dogs in heat start shedding an unusual amount? If it was Spring time instead of Winter I would just chalk it up to loosing her Winter coat. Her coat is really glossy and she is in fine health.
Yes some bitches shed during season - Marley shed her entire undercoat during her second (or third?) season.
Thanks kerry. Well that is good to know. I thought Lee was going to have a bald dog to pet if Aggie kept it up.
Common with some bitches, peppa dropped all her undercoat during and after, you would just get her back in full coat and bang in again  Kelsey bloomed and grew coat like crazy while in and after. So there all different and not unusual for them to blow coat with there crazy hormones. 8)
Yeah, Aggie is finally coming out of her heat. She is now going back to her normal dive bombing of Edgar's ankles instead of sniffing his penis every chance she can get.

Bad news though is we have been dealing with extremely liquid poop that is very bloody. Started around Wednesday I think. We followed what the emergency clinic told us on the phone by feeding her yogurt, ground beef, and rice in small portions. There was no let up so thankfully we got her into her normal vet early Saturday. They didn't know what was causing it so we were sent home with a wormer, pepto bismal, and antibiotics. Hopefully something gets better.
Get better soon Aggie. :crossed:
