Clean floors with 3 Sheepies

I rarely get excited about anything that means cleaning but this is really worth telling everyone about.

The main areas of my house are hard surface, slate covering the entire front entry, tile in the mudroom, and a great vinyl that looks like hardwood inbetween.

My cleaning issues came with the vinyl. It is deeply textured. No matter what cleaning substance used or hours spent on knee scrubing with a stiff brush, I could not elimiate the dark buildup on the outer edges. Wherever the vinyl ended the buildup would start. The smutz was creeping farther into the rooom and it made me crazy.

The same day I hit the crazy dirty floor wall I took Elle to the vet because she had been suffering from reverse sneeze's for three weeks. While at the vet he asked me if I'd changed floor cleaning products. Huh?? He said the sneeze generally happens with inflammed nasal tissue and it can come as an allergic reaction to something in their near environment. OK

So as a last ditch effort to save my floor and take additional chemicals out of my dogs near environment, I did my research and ordered a steam floor cleaner. It couldn't be easier, load a little water, plug in, and 5 minutes later start running it over the floor. Way Cool!

It did a GREAT JOB!!!!!! The unidentified black gunck, GONE. All of the hard surfaces were spotless, cleaner than they ever had been. All without using chemicals.

So it get's better. The cleaner was bundled with a hand steam cleaner. OMG, it cleans all those weird little spots that I've puzzled over for years. Dirt gathered in the 90 degree corner of cabinet molding and base boards, window tracks, the cast iron grills on my gas range, hardwater deposits on my shower doors, window and mirrors are spotless and the tight spots around the toilet.

I still hate cleaning, but I have a lot fewer dirty spots to obsess about. :D

Now you've made me want to get mine repaired
:excited:
What kind did you get???
Dirt is a constant battle around here!
Sounds like you've made cleaning fun!......or at least tolerable

Is Elle doing better too?
Nope, cleaning is never fun, but much more satisfying. I purchased the Eureka Enviro Clean at Amazon. In searching reviews it received the best marks for a machine that is affordable. You can purchase alone or bundled with the hand held cleaner. Don't buy the extra cloths recommended in the bundle, they don't fit.

The divine Ms E appears to be on the mend, but will remain under observation for a while longer.
You can visit here, my floors and sheepies need cleaning :P
8O I have VERY similar problems with my floors. SO filthy, and nothing I do gets them properly clean. Do you know if this steamer can be used on wood floors and wood laminate flooring?!?
It has been pouring here (rain) and I have 8 dogs in the house!! I just ordered both Now if I can just get the dogs to use it!!!!

4dognight

I'm not sure about the wood floors, but it says any hard surface. I'll look at the manual when I get home. I did use the hand steamer on the corners of the alder kitchen cabinets.

If you figure that out, please tell me how. I'd even start giving the dogs allowance if they clean the floors.
I don't think those are meant for laminate since you're not supposed to really soak a laminate floor. The heat and steam will peel the laminate right off the board over time or at least make it bubble.

really? that cheap and it works? how sturdy is it? I bought one at Target once - different kind and after a week it started leaking (think steam burns on your hands).

If this really works I am ordering one.

DO the attachents do windows?
I can't wait until they sell those robots like on The Jetsons. What was her name, Rosie? I can't live in this house right now unless the floors are hand cleaned every other day, and every day with the swiffer, so she'd sure make my life a lot easier!!!!!!!!!! I'd have her make dinner and post pics too. ;)
I love my steam cleaner. It does, wood, tile, laminate +
I have the Shark.

THANKS; good to know!
I want that shark steamer so much! Especially when we finally get rid of our gross flooring we have now and get the new flooring installed, hopefully in the next few months.

It's amazing how quickly paw prints develop.

I didn't want to invest a huge amount of money since it would be my first attempt at the steam process of cleaning. I spent time reading a cross section of reviews that included Haan, Shark, and others in the affordable range. The Eureka had consistantly good reviews, so it was my choice.

I don't have a lot to compare to other than Shark which I looked at in the store. To me it seems the Eureka has sturdier construction. Even though it is in the less expensive range I didn't think "cheap" when putting it together. Time will tell.

The hand steamer has a small squeegee(sp) attachment for glass.
After asking this board TWICE (I take a long time to make a decision), I went with the bissell, and totally don't regret it. It does all floors as well. Great! I've also used the shark and liked it equally as much. There were +'s and -'s for both which are addressed if you go read the reviews on amazon. I went with what I felt suited me the most.

Great thanks!! I think it must have been the shark I had - I loved it for the week it worked , great on the molding and windows, I am so ordering this tomorrow and with 2 day shipping :) :) :)

Reviews are a great tool to help choose what fits your needs.

I was looking at the Bissell and the Shark at Target today. the Bissell there looked like it was more for carpet than anything else. Does it do wood floors too?
a little research and I'm thinking about this one:

http://housekeeping.about.com/od/vacuum ... ormate.htm
I bought the bissel off Amazon on Thursday - it arrived friday and i had just enough time to try it on one of the tile floors before I took off for the weekend. It worked better than the swiffer - probably not as good as a scrub brush hand washing.

I'll try it a few more times before I really make up my mind. I do think I will order a hand steam cleaner though too for counters and windows etc. Not buying cleaners is great!

This is what the description says:

It is safe for use on marble, ceramic, stone, vinyl, laminate, linoleum, and sealed hardwoods

I actually bought more mop pads to cover it since I knew the 2 or so it comes with wouldn't be enough. Think I got an extra 6 for just 20 bucks!

The reviews also give tips on how to use it better which solved a few of my problems. It had a better customer reviews than the shark, so I don't expect miracles ...just that it works better than most cleaners out there. ;) Lately I've been curious about the Haan cleaner though ...I hate when you buy something and then something new peaks your interest!
I think I will order the Haan smaller steamer for the corners adn counters adn stuff.

Allison do the stores have the Bissel steam mop? I only have seent he carpet cleansers in our walmart and target.

Look on amazon - mine is tea green :D
Finally home and time to take a second pass at the floors. The first time left just a tiny bit of the build up in the high traffic area's (in front of the stove, fridge, and sink). The second application took it all! I still use my swiffer to clean up muddy dog tracks inbetween steamings. I'm going to use it one more time and if all goes as well, I'll be writing a review for it.

As for the hand steamer, my house will never be without one again. In addition to all the stuff it cleans in general, it took care of one of my pet peeves. We have tremendous winds and dust. No matter what I do I cannot keep the window tracks clean. The steamer blew that gunk out of all the cracks and the tracks were as clean as the day I moved in. :D

Target had two different Bissel steam mops when I was there yesterday, and one Hoover that I am interested in. I REALLY want to buy one, and am willing to pay to get the "right" one. Our house has big wide open areas of laminate, two rooms of tile, and three rooms with wood that has a rough texture. Our laminate ALWAYS looks streaky, and I can't get a good deep clean in the textured floors. So I'm reading there's reviews closely to get the one that does everything I need. So far the Hoover reviews seem really positive about not leaving a streaky film on shiny floors, like my laminate.

wow!!!!! Okay; now I need to add a hand steamer to my Christmas list.
I use the Shark at least four times a week for a very large area. It is great. But there are times i use the old bucket with water and clorox on the tile. There are also times i use the swiffer wet jet for quick pick ups - muddy paw prints....

With wood or laminate the terry cloth on the steamer needs to be changed as soon as it is dirty. i sometimes use three or four.

yes lots of work with five dogs. but they are worth it! and I love clean floors. ha! no paw prints last for about and hour
This is helpful as I have wanted one for a while. I just posted this under Jo's " What do you want for Christmas " post but I'm dropping hints here so I will repeat this message....Hon, if you are reading our e-mail this is a hint
I just bought the Bissel Steam Mop from Best Buy; they had it for $89.99

I'm not sure I like it, and am beginning to wish I'd spent the extra $60 for the Hoover Floor Mate, which they also had. That one does the vacuuming, then steams and dries the floors. With the Bissell, you have to sweep or vacuum first, and my floors are wet after. My dogs are curious, so they of course are walking through the wet floors to see what I'm doing, leaving tracks. Sort of defeats the purpose of doing the mopping. :?

I have the floor mate - not worth it. You rally have to do your heavy vaccuuming first before you vaccuum with it. and it doesn't dry completely either.

With the new steam mop. I vaccuum, steam mop and always plan on the dogs being in a room I am not working in - it only takes a few minutes to dry.

I have never used a floor mate, but most of the people who bought a bissell on the reviews HAVE ONE, and they said they hated it compared to their Bissell.

I too hate having the wet floor, but I guess you can only expect that when steam cleaning the floor. I open my windows and it dries really fast, and I have a gate separating the rooms. By the time I finish one, and refill the water, I move them to the dry clean room. I have heard the Shark dries even faster. Plus another negative about the Bissell is you need an extension cord attached to finish an entire bottom floor (or you just replug of course).
ARGH!!! I just returned the Bissel steam mop for the Hoover floor mate!!
Well its more than a month later, and I wanted to post that I made the right decision for our floors. The Hoover Floor Mate is awesome! If it had steam, I would run away with it and marry it. But as it is, its perfect for how much filth there is on our wood and tile.

As I've mentioned in other threads, our back yard does not drain well; so it's ALWAYS wet and boggy. The dogs of course march this mud through the house. The Hoover has a receptacle for water with detergent, that is sprayed through the head. The head has a row of round scrubbing brushes that really get up the dirt, and then the dirty water is sucked back up into the machine and held in another receptacle that you can pour out when you are done, so you aren't pushing the same dirty water around on the floor.

That last receptacle is what really sold me on it. The water I pour out is the color of chocolate pudding, and I usually have 1/2 inch of sandy dirt at the bottom of it. I feel like I can actually see how much filth its picking up and scrubbing off my floors when I poor that water out. My regular mop would have just pushed that dirt around, and the steam mop head was filthy in the first few strokes, and again I was just moving dirty water around on the floors. I see the Hoover picking this stuff up, and that make me very happy!
I am looking for a steam cleaner, but want a canister model. One that will clean floors as well as the ceramic tiles and tub in bathroom, steam curtains and wrinkles out of clothes, steams the grill...
I thought I found what I wanted on QVC. It is a McCoulaugh ( sp ) same name as the chain saw co. The reviews are hot and cold on this model.
Any help with would be welcome......Kathy
I began to feel like i was not going to be able to get one cleaner that would do everything that I wanted. So I got the Hoover for my floors, and will next look for a steam cleaner that I can use on my futons, counters, windows, etc.
I was so happy with the bissel steam mops perfomance on the floors I wanted to try an overall steam cleaner.

I went with the Haan canister and so far I love it. It cleans floors, (newfy slime off) walls, woodwork, windows and mirrors, the tub, the stove top, toilets, ovens and (probably worth the price on its own) my Macaw's cage.

I moved the bissel upstairs for everyday mopping and kept the Haan canister downstairs for the heavier cleanng.

The down side of th eHaan - it doesn't make steam long enough without waiting to mop a wide open space , but I wait and do some other cleaning in its down time - but everything is sparkly shiny clean ( for a few minutes  )

The floormate just sits in the pantry.
Poor Hoover floormate; no-one loves it but me!
I am so glad this thread came back to life!!! My mother had her mind set on getting us a steam cleaner for Christmas, and I wasn't thrilled with the Shark (not sure how ruggid it would be), so I dissuaded her into buying us something else. We took all our leftover wedding gift cards from Bed, Bath, and Beyond and bought the Hahn a few weeks ago. We splurged and got the one with all of the attachments.....LOVE IT!!!!!!!! It was expensive, but so worth it. I do agree with Kerry that the steam doesn't last very long, but so far I am a fan.
I never thought I would get to the point in life where household appliances would be so exciting

Can you give me a ball park idea as to what I will need to spend? This sounds like what I'm looking for. We do have a local Bed Bath & Beyond.
Will I have to put Chauncey on Old Roy from Walmart??
I can't put him out to stud he's fixed, but I really do want one that does it all.
Seriously though, I'm willing to spend the money to get a good quality cleaner that will do everything I want. I just don't want to waste money on something that isn't all purpose.
Thanks.......Kathy
I don't think it's time for the Ol' Roy yet, but I think it was about $170-ish. Of course the BBB near us didn't have it in stock, so we had to order on-line. So with tax and shipping it was almost $200. Kerry, correct me if I am wrong. My computer isn't letting me open another tab for whatever reason to double check.

I do agree appliances have gotten much cooler.....next topic.....my Rowenta ironing/steaming system  Even cooler!
Sounds good. Chauncey will be happy that he can continue to eat well.
BTW, how does it work on Sheepies???

I bought it from Kohl's online with a sale 15% off everything, it had free shipping and the total was $165. I grew up in NYC - you don'tpay retail for anything
My Hoover floormate went in the dumpster last year, it did not vacuum up any of the sheepie hair, and left my wood floors dull. So I am still looking for one that will not dull my hardwood floors.
the steam ones say they don't if your floors are properly sealed.
my floors are properly sealed, my husband is a contractor and my floors have 7 coats of Gym Seal on them.
then steam away :) :) :)

Oh does Rick want to come to our house for a week or two......
He does travel :D , The Hovver was the one that dulled my floors, they are not laminate but real oak floors Rick put in the house about 10 yrs. ago. I have them shining now since I threw it out, but am wondering if all floor steamers would do this ? I wonder if I bought one, did not like it if they would let me bring it back?

I got a steamer at Best Buy, tried it, didn't like it, and took it back. No hassles at all.
Great :D Thanks :!:
