Swine flu in dogs
China says they have found the H1N1 in dogs. This is different than canine flu. A comment below the story claimed it was the dog's revenge for being on the menu in that country.  |

Should my dogs start wearing masks when they're out on their daily walks? I'd hate for the neighbors dog to bark in their face and give it to them. Oh the horror, I'm scared. Maybe I'll start washing their paws when they come home to lower the risks of them catching and spreading it. Ruh-roww...  |
People can pass it to dogs, but dogs can't to people?  |

Surprisingly, it is found that many more diseases pass from human - dog than from dog - human. And not just b/c of cleanliness/access. There are a few exceptions. I had a dog while growing up that was a carrier for strep. 10 days on antibiotics and the entire family was happier. 
I would worry for my dogs/cats getting swine flu only if a. you have it b. your animal is in a high-traffic area a lot (vet, dog park, etc.) or if your pet has other health issues. |

Mrs J, let know know if you're able to train your dogs to wear masks. I can only imagine the revolt I'd have if I tried to convince mine to wear them.  
Actually, I'm at a huge dog event this weekend. Tight quarters. Indoors. Good opportunity to pick up things but, knock on wood, my dogs never seem to do so. Now, I could see Sybil being susceptible to goat flu, but hopefully that won't be an issue. Kristine |
