restlessness

Rudie has had diarrhea for a day and a half and now he is extremely restless. he is pacing the apartment back and forth and going into rooms that he never goes into. I tried taking him out twice but he did not go. He is also panting.

I know he was fed a lot of turkey/other crap at my in-laws this weekend, but I don't know the extend of it since I wasn't there for most of it. I'm really frustrated about this but also feel like a bad mom for allowing some of it. He is usually ok with some scraps but he is not used to meat or really fatty foods.

I called the emergency vet, they were concerned it was bloat at first because of the restlessness but Im' fairly certain it is not. If he doesn't settle in the next 20 minutes or so we are going to take a trip over there.... cross paws for us

Pancreatitis is another one that seems to follow a lot of holidays with overzeaous relatives :? Usually more vomiting than the runs as I recall though.

Hopefully it's nothing :crossed: Keep us posted please.

Poor Rudie
Actually, Pancreatis can cause some blow
out bloody diarrhea.
Turkey and Ham are huge culprits in that as they
are such greasy meats!
We usually see this after each holiday!

I would get him to the vet for fluids at least.
May need some tummy meds too to stop the
diarrhea.
Hope nobody gave him bones...

Is he drinking ok?
Is he wanting to eat?
May want to give him just rice...if anything.
That would be up to the vet of course!

Good Luck with the little man!
:ghug:
Back from the er vet.

They took an xray because they feared bloat and I feared a blockage. No bloat (phew) but possible blockage. There is a lot of gas in a centralized area of his intestines, but no visual blockage. Because they couldn't see anything I decided to take him home and wait it out.

In the mean time he had a pepcid injection to settle his stomach and metronidazole for diarrhea. I'm cooking up some rice right now so I can give him a pill and to see if that settles him down at all.

He is currently pacing still which is stressing me out to no end.

I have a digital copy of the xray, I'll upload it in case anyone has any insight!
You might want to mix a little pumpkin in there if you can find any. Bella was all blocked up a while back and that was the only other thing we did besides what you are already doing. That and some pain meds.
Oh I didn't even think of pain meds, that is a good idea. I just gave him some I had leftover, hopefully that will help him settle down for the night.

Good news was he drank water and chowed the rice I gave him. He is also following Dave around looking for dinner scraps. He is still restless and panting though, so please cross paws for him.
Crossing paws!
I hope Rudie is OK and you all are able to get to sleep tonight - safely!
You may be up tonight taking the guy out for short walks around the yard or whatever to help relieve the gas.

Yes, T-giving is hard on dogs since everyone wants to give the dog a treat. Just too rich!

I'm surprised the emergency vet said it was OK to feed the dog. Usually with any type of tummy or bowel problem it is best to wait and stick to water and dilute broth for 24 hours.

Glad it was not bloat but still be very careful. I wouldn't worry about the diarrhea until the gas issue has been solved.
Hope Rudie is improving. :crossed:

I'm surprised the emergency vet didnt give you pain meds as intestinal stuff is usually pretty painful. But watch him more closely after pain meds as he can be feeling OK even though he is getting worse.
I just wanted to mention Ru also does the pacing thing whenever he has a tummy upset. There was a 2 day virus going round in the summer & Ru literally didn't lie down during those 2 days, he paced and paced all through the nights too so I think it's maybe not that unusual when they have an upset tummy. It makes sense, who wants to lie on their tummy when it's hurting? They also walk around when they are about to poop, I expect it's the same sort of feeling, wanting to get it out. I can tell whenever Ru has an upset tummy now because he walks about like that.
Poor guy - sounds like large get togethers don'e agree with him, although I am sure the emergancy vet is thankful for them

Morgan is prone to bouts of pancreatitis, he doesn't pace with them though.
Well he had a little bit of diarrhea last night after the rice. But then he went to sleep and I didn't hear a peep out of him all night. He went out this morning and did not poop. Seems back to normal, but that may just be the meds talking. I will be keeping a very close eye on him and if the pacing or diarrhea returns we will likely be going for xray round 2.
all here hoping for the best. crossed paws
so it's been 3 days and the diarrhea/tummy ache/pacing has stopped. we now have the opposite problem and he hasn't pooped since sunday! he ate rice only (with a little kibble) for two days and today he is back fully on kibble. he is also on metronidazole. does that seem normal? i figure he didnt have much left in him from all the diarrhea and the rice probably plugged him right up... so I'm not too worried. If he doesn't poop by tomorrow morning I'll be calling the vet.
pumpkin...always works for us.

ah, it works both ways?
We used pumpkin for Bella when she was all blocked up...she gets it every meal now. A tablespoon.

Actually it does, isn't that odd??
I always keep gas-x in the house and Phyxame. Both are same but the Phyzame is 180 mil of simtheone which gets rid of the gas.

I would start to be concerned if he doesn't give you a poop soon. That could be a sign of a blockage. Some things cannot show up on the x-rays. But I think you would have some vomitting if there is a blockage.

Good luck and hope he feels better.
thanks for the info. no poop yet, even after a one mile walk. ill try some pumpkin this afternoon!

im not as concerned about blockage as I was last time. There is 0 sign of him getting into anything and he hasn't vomited. still keepin the paws crossed though!
Thanks again for the pumpkin tip, worked like a charm!
Now you need to stock up on it because we are supposed to have a shortage. I buy some whenever I go to the market. :D
