How many treats is too much????

Ok - here is the deal ---I have a real problem with giving my dogs treats I love to give them little tastes of peanut butter, biscuits, the occasional piece of pizza crust, yogurt, chedder cheese etc etc etc - how do you know if you are giving too many treats? they both seem to still be eating their own food but I dont want to risk either one of them becoming overweight. Is there a rule of thumb as to how many treats per day relative to how much kibble they take in?

We give treats at certain times, each time they go out they get a treat
(beware of Rosco who will run in and out 50 times and expect a treat each time) I've never added up the amount although I usually will break a larger whatever in two and they each get half. I have noticed that they aren't aware of the size, only the amount so no matter how small it thrills them. My dogs like carrots, tomatoes and yogurt so I guess that's pretty healthy. Our first OES Flash and our cat used to love twinkies. The cat would only eat the filling and Flash would only eat the cake....a match made in Heaven!
We run a treat centered household, but I'd say too much is when you realize that you've been trained!

Lucy also does the 50 times in and out thing. She manages to squeeze out the tiniest amount sometimes just so it qualifies but I know I'm being played! Also, when Clyde first came, it upset Lucy and she wouldn't eat her own food. She's always been a people food dog so I would take my plate, split it in half and we'd sit and eat together because I felt bad that she was hungry. She's very gentle and not slobbery so sharing with her was no problem for me. This went on for about a week until my boyfriend caught us. Long story short, apparently Lucy was ready to eat her regular food again-- she just didn't tell me. I am trying not to make the same mistakes with Clyde! He only gets treats for real accomplishments and it's working out great. He gets a lot but it motivates him to do stuff and he's been learning really fast.
My girls really have no interest in treats.... or leftovers even.... food doesn't work for anything around here...
Food definately works in my house. I just am a little concerned that I dont know what they can and cannot eat - Some say never give table scraps because it will cause overweight and health problems others say go for it --- :? It is confusing and I just want to make sure that I do not jeopordize their health by spoiling them -

Willowsprite - I just noticed that our dates of registration for this forum are the exact same day but a year apart. Not only do we have a set of sisters but our dates are identical - coincidence eh?
Jasper doesn't seem to like treats very much. He'll chew on pig ears/hooves all day long, but if I give him a biscuit or "beef"stick, he turns his nose up at it.
Sheepish>>> that's funny, I hadn't noticed...lol
LMAO!!this is funny. My whole household is food driven!!!LOL!!Mickey is all about his food.Mickey,Jagger, and Eddie get to doggie snacks a day,I buy them the ones that are roasted turkey w/ sweet potatos, and cranberries, they also have tbone, they are all natural, and the boys LOVE em!!I TRY and not feed them table scraps due to the fact Mickey is a BIG boy already and I dont want him to get over weight.Come summer time I am an avid mountain biker which i will be taking Mickey w/ me this yr and teaching him what it is all about.I cant have a chubby boy "trying" to keep up!!LOL!!Now Jagger is really fit but he gets what Mickey gets because I dont think it is fair to give one something and the other nothing.Jagger is my beach partner he loves the water and will jump right in w/ no hesitation. So Im hoping Mickey will follow him.
Our house is treat driven too! Although I'm the odd one: I think it's a treat when someone else does the laundry!

Farley and Abby get very small bits of bread and bacon every night when we do our "lessons." We have a hodge podge of dog training that I'm doing to get Farley ready for real training. They both do Sit, Down, Stay, "Flat" (a home grown command that means lay on your side so mom can pat or brush your belly), Come, Find, Fetch etc.

Last night I was upstairs with Farley doing some training and Abby was downstairs right next to Jamie in the kitchen. Abby must have heard me because when I was telling Farley Sit and Down - Abby was doing it for Jamie at the same time and then for good measure she rolled over too!
Hi,

Both Shaggy and Blue recieved treats all their lives ( I claim it's before I knew better.)

Now that I know better, except for the occasional bisquit for a job done I don't give Merlin or Panda anything! My sister thought I was a big meanie until she visited my house.

I'll tell you why according to my own experience. Having dinner with family or friends...it's a real pain to have the dogs gather round the table looking for handouts. Imagine a party where your guest are seated and the dog is sitting next to or infront of them drooling. You can imagine your house isn't going to be popular after a while. Not all people are dog crazy like us. I'm the biggest fan of LOVE ME< LOVE MY DOG, but.......

It may be fine for you to deal with the first year....but there's year two, three, four, five , six , seven , eight, nine...etc.... Imagine how many Christmas dinners, b-day parties, special events you are going to celebrate for the next 10-15 years and will have to put up with it.

Shaggy passed away last year and Blue is nearing his 16th birthday this month and still drools whenever I eat and comes begging.

Nope made up my mind that no matter what...Merlin and Panda are not going to get treats for any other reason than if I am trying to get them to do a task or it's a special event like their b-day.

>>The Big Meanie

PS _It's kinda like having kids, you make all the mistakes with the first and eventually you get it down pat by the time the youngest is born but still continue to make some mistakes.
Heather, we use the "Flat" command too! This place is full of coincidences today.

Another word on treats. Carl is very food driven and because of this did very well in puppy kindergarten, he took first place! He will do absolutely anything for a treat including running through his entire repetoire of tricks if you have food and don't give him a command quick enough!
The down side is, when we moved on to Level 1 obedience, he failed because you aren't allowed to bait your dog. If there was no food, he was unmotivated even though we had trained with treats on an intermittent basis.
