Turkey Necks

I suppose of all days of the year, this is the one to ask it....

I have never given my girls turkey necks. I have read that others have done so, and its safe, and good for them, etc. I just need confirmation of this before I hand it over. Turkey neck, un-cooked, full of bones. I can cut it in half and give a piece to each of my dogs.

Just checking; I want to be sure!

thanks all; and Happy Thanksgiving;
Allison

hmmm.. I Googled this, and some think they should be served to dogs frozen???

Any thoughts/experiences would be appreciated.
I know Kristine gives them to the gang.
I've never been there for those days, but I think they get them fresh, not frozen.
I've given both fresh and frozen and they really enjoy them. Just be sure not to cook them.

Do yours chew them up pretty thoroughly? I've got one gulper... wondering
if I held it for her if she'd gnaw rather than try to swallow the whole thing.
LOL...I eat the neck...no sharing with dogs here. Bella has a poultry allergy anyway.
You can give them the neck. Personally I'd keep it and cook it for stock for the gravy. For first timers with necks best to start smaller with chicken necks.

Mine will gulp meat but they chew the necks. The bones are said to help keep the front teeth free of tartar because they tend to chew them in the front (unlike a marrow bone, where they use their side and back teeth).
I'll have to try that some time. Thanks for the info.

Today's turkey neck is on the stove for gravy too :D
mine get them almost every night an donly frozen if I haven't defrosted the next bag soon enough.
Tonks and Luna LOVED them... for about 4 minutes. Then they were gone. I think they must have swallowed them.

Well, that's kind of the point so that's OK. They can easily devour them in four minutes (or less).

Mine get them some times fresh (hi, Dawn! 8) ), some times frozen and then thawed or at least partially thawed. I've never given them to them straight out of the freezer. I don't think it would be a problem, it's just not something I've tried.

Glad they liked them!

*sigh*
I was very excited to share the neck w/the dogs. Unfortunately, I didn't find it until several hours into cooking! 8O I guess I'll strip the meat from the vertebrae and do it that way...

It's the thought that counts, right? I'm sure they loved it cooked as well, as long as you do as you do and don't feed any cooked bones.

If you still want to give it a try and don't want to wait till next thanksgiving, you can buy packs of just turkey necks at some grocery stores.

People who feed raw usually often buy in bulk for better prices. I can get 30 lb boxes very inexpensively if I order through the training club I belong to. But if you just want to try some as a treat look in the meat section of the grocery store.

we have a pretty good butchers shop near us. I'm going to see if I can order some from them.
Beaureguard ate the one from our turkey and he was a very happy camper. :D He is a big fan of Thanksgiving now. 8)
make friends with an independent butcher, not the grocery chains. You'll be amazed what they can get for you. In addition to chicken necks, also chicken backs and pork necks are good. Yeah, you'll need a freezer which has stopped me from stocking up. Another delight is the wing tips, the 1st section without meat. Even puppies can handle those.
